The 3 Arms of Government in Nigeria , which is the most corrupt?

''President Olusegun Obasanjo took a swipe at the Nigerian Judiciary, adjudging it to be corrupt, and partly responsible for the perception by Nigerians and others that they could not get justice without money''
- The Guardian Newspapers,August 7, 2005.

''Sometime in the month of February 2005, intelligence report came to me that ....the Minister of Education invited his acting Permanent Secretary and some Directors to collect money from votes under their control to bribe some members of the National Assembly so that they can ensure that their budget will not be reduced, in fact, in order that the budget for the ministry submitted by the Executive may be increased.''
- President Obasanjo's Address To The Nation on The Ministry of Education Bribery Scandal, March 22, 2005

You decide which is the most corrupt among the 3 Arms of Government.

The problem with our president is that he just talk and talk and talk. So the judicary is corrupt, eh, so what?
Does he have hard evidence, or it is based on mere anecdotes?

Has he just woken to that realization? And what is he going to do about it?...what he doesn't realize is that being the president, he can't just don't drop a bombshell like this without a clear plan on how, and what to do about it.
Now we will wait another year or so to hear how he's going to deal with the problem. A smart approach is to act first then talk later, na lie, naija man will talk first and start thinking of what to do later.

The statement of a head of state is important, and carries a lot of weight. You just to throw vibes around for the sake of it.

Bibi-2, what invisible arm of the Nigerian government are you talking about? Do you mean this one?

Seun,

yes, thats what I mean. The invisible arm are those not directly linked to the 3 visible arms, but tend to run/dictate for the visible arms...past leaders, private sector, banks, our money bags, etc. This is the most corrupt.

By the 3 arms of Government, my feeble mind interpretes Executive, Judiciary and Legislative. Without much ado, i conclude the most corrupt is the Executive. The Executive comprises Federal, State and Local Governments. And i believe Naija dey suffer past today becos of the gross misdeeds and misappropriations of the people at the State Level and the state assemblies remain silent and barren about it all. Too bad i am lazy, but i would love to stumble across comparative analysis of Naija's state governments.

The three arms of the govt are corrupt including the head. All we hear is budget budget and read on the dailies. And that is the end of it, we never hear or read on the same dailies, the accountability on how the budget is being spent and even see what tax payers money has been used for.

Its high time Nigerians should know CORRUPTION is our main name now and not middle name. Infact, the word called CORRUPTION should replace the name our country NIGERIA. The people in Government are so good at it, "The more you are looking for evidence of corruption, the less you see". Starting from the Head, body and toes. What a great country we have here. The only evidence you see is their accumulated wealth both home and abroad. shikena! kiss

to me i believe the law makers are the most corrupts one, they share money in the house as if they are working in the banks, were don't even hear them doing meetings about law making but how to steal, forge, share our money. they are just too corrupt
Re: Most Corrupt of the 3 Arms of Government in Nigeria by Bibi(m): 9:08pm On Aug 11, 2005
Debscom ---- thats called the dividend of democrazy. On a serious note, the legislature is the most corrupt. They have nothing to offer but as Debscom said, just meeting about sharing the loot. They are always inflating budgets without concrete reasons (anyway, the concrete reason is that they also run the major contracting firms that will end up chopping the capital budget anyway) to show for it, and nothing to account for their allocations.

I would say on a productivity vs loss basis, the legislature is the most corrupt. Its a negative productivity with a huge, almost immaginable overhead.

Funny...

Nigeria at the weekend, launched a spirited campaign in Accra for a permanent representation on the United Nations (UN) Security Council, citing the size and population of the oil rich West African country as factors for consideration.

"Nigeria is a regional power in its own right. It is a potentially economic giant. With an estimated population of 130 million, Nigeria is easily the largest single market in Africa," Mr Abdullahi Adamu, Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, said in Accra.

Mr Adamu, who was a Guest Speaker at the launch of a 319 -page book that eulogized the foreign policies of Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, at a seaside hotel in Ghana's national capital, said his country was the most populous black nation in the world.

"One out of every four Africans is a Nigerian. One out of every five blacks in the world is a Nigerian," he said, attracting cheers at the function attended by Ghana's Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, his wife, Hajia Ramatu, Ministers of State from the two countries, members of the Diplomatic Corps, chiefs and journalists.

He said of all the countries that had shown interest in the permanent seat, including Egypt and South Africa, Nigeria was the only true black nation that could raise a purely black national flag. Mr Adamu said although the UN effected some reforms in 1965 by increasing the membership of the Security Council from 11 to 15, no change was made to the five permanent members structure.

He said at that time the world was divided rather neatly between the Western and Eastern blocs with the Non-Aligned nations constituting themselves into swing support for one or the other group as circumstances dictated.

"All these have changed in the 40 years since the reforms. The time calls for some fundamental reforms in the United Nations Security Council in line with contemporary global developments," he noted.

Mr Adamu said military prowess or the possession of means and weapons of mass destruction could no longer be the sole determinant of the relevance of a nation to do its duty to the international community, adding, " Economic power has become even more relevant and Japan has shown the way."

Backing his bid for his country for the Pan African representation, the Executive Governor recalled the role Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah played to entrench pan- African Unity. "Here in the historic Ghanaian capital, more than 50 years ago, the great Pan-Africanist, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the Ghanaian President of blessed memory, preached the gospel of Pan-Africa unity and planted in the black race the seeds of black pride.

"But Africa and the peoples of Africa face new struggles and new challenges. The challenges of illiteracy, health care delivery system, poor communications, unemployment, rural-urban drift and of course, poverty are enormous."

Mr Adamu said in Africa's current struggle, President Obasanjo had emerged as Africa's rallying point.

" I can find no place more fitting than Accra, Ghana, to present to the world the man who rules one country but devotes himself to the service of every African, nay, every third world country." Alhaji Mahama who launched the book, " Obasanjo And The New Face Of Nigeria's Foreign Policy", described the Head of State as " a proven colossus of international relations," who had played a role in dealing with sectional and other bloody conflicts in the West African sub-region.

"As a veteran of the political scene in Nigeria, President Obasanjo has had the benefit of being at the helm of the nation in different capacities and forms. He has been a key of the process of political rejuvenation in Africa from experimentation with authoritarianism to the re-establishment and entrenchment of democracy."

Alhaji Mahama congratulated the author, Mr Abdulmumin Jibrin, for a job well done.

" I have the singular honour and privilege of declaring the book...duly launched", he said paving the way for the review and auctioning of the first copy for 30 million naira.

Civilians in Bayelsa State are suing the State Government and members of the House of Assembly for a 1.3 billion naira project that Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha awarded to the 24 members of the House of Assembly. The plaintiff's claim the process of award of the contract did not call for any tenders to be submitted, there was no proof that the members could execute the contracts properly, and the constitution of the state regards the Governnor and house members as primarily custodians of the law and not contract executors, etc.

Of the 3 arms of government, it's the legislative that's most corrupt, followed by the executive. The judicature still gives us hope.

corruption in nig has nothing to do with arms of gov rather aso rock,
nigeria has no seperation of powers as aso rock is the only one practical arm of gov so the good, the bad and the urgly dey there.
so the only and most corrupt arm of government in nig is ASO ROCK they can rock things.
the director of aso rock in the last eight years turned out to be the richest man nigeria has known in such a short period of time. the same director was the president/petrolium minister over the time and he was the director of corruption and selected justice.
he led the most horrible selection(election) in the history of nigeria. his selected and anoited son yar- no dua is now the present director of aso rosk and is about head the power and steel ministry.
corruption begets corruption.

Absolutely not true. Are you going to sit there and say the President controls how the State Governments use their revenue? Or that the president controls the Judges, National, and Local Assemblies? Are you seriously going to put that down as an intelligent argument?

I believe the most corrupt arm of government has to be the Executive especially State Governments. A majority of the State Governments have been a waste of oxygen for the past 8 years.
