My contribution to this is simple: Programming is vast and rapidly evolving meaning some programming languages may not get you anywhere in this day and age. I can only think of two categories of programming making it in the industry now: Game Development (Mobile or Web) or App Development. There are several programming tools or languages that are widely used to achieve these but the question is: What exactly do you want to achieve in programming, then you can decide on the best industry used language to achieve these. Unfortunately some of these languages are not taught in the universities so you have to learn them yourself. A few I know are: Objective C (This is probably most widely used language) HTML 5 Java There are lots of 3rd party programming tools developed using objective C and some are free, some of which had been used to develop most successful games in 2014 - Flappy Bird, 2048, etc. So again, you need to decide what you want to do with programming first, then the tools will or language will fall in place, then you can start making hit apps and make millions of Naira from downloads 1 Like |

I've decided to learn 2 programming languages this year. I learned VB6 and .NET between 2006 and 2008, but I've been AWOL on programming since then. I'm looking at java, html5, php, or c++. I know there are tons of free tutorial websites and ebooks out there. But I'd like someone to recommend a good book or ebook or website. Used and trusted. Many thanks. 1 Like |

I would suggest this order: Python (simple syntax, learning curve not steep) Java (advanced object oriented programming, deeper treatment of types) C/C++ (mother of all languages, pointer use) Learn some JavaScript too, web apps are getting very popular. Hope it helps. 1 Like |

My advice is to get a reference book for all programming languages you are interested in. Schaum's series can be gotten for almost any programming language both ebook and hard copy. Hard copy is better tho. Understand the basics of the language and the world is yours |

Programming isn't difficult with patients and dedication on ur side. First identify what u want to achieve, then select the best programming language for achieving that target and learn it wella! Never jump start learning a language just because ur friend is doing it! That language may not be compatible with ur brain the way it is with ur friend. That was how I started and became one today. |
