Police uncover 30 illegal detention camps in Ibadan

DELE OGUNYEMI, Ibadan

Oyo State Police Command has declared about 30 illegal detention camps, where people are being tortured to death are in operation in different parts of Ibadan, Oyo State capital. But the Command maintained that its officers and men are stepping up efforts to uncover and crack down the various locations wthout further delay.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the State Command, ASP Olabisi Okuwobi, made the shocking revelation in Ibadan, while speaking with journalists on the heels of last weekend’s gory discovery by detectives from the state Criminal Investigation Department [CID] of an illegal detention camp being operated by one Alfa Ganiyu Imoniyi at Ile-Tuntun area of Ibadan.

About 29 detainees found at the Ile-Tuntun illegal camp were set free by the police operatives.

However, another person identified as Biliaminu Bashiru was barely six days after tortured to death by owner of another illegal detention camp, Alfa Ali Admola, located at Orogun area of Ibadan.

Okuwobi told newsmen that police detectives had already arrested Alfa Ali Ademola in connection with Bashiru’s death.

The death of Bashiru has brought the number of people reportedly killed at such illegal detention camp in recent time to three, as two were feared dead in the Imoniyi’s camp discovered last Friday.

Commenting over the development, the PPRO said: "The command has been hinted that 30 such illegal detention camps are in Ibadan."

She, however, said that investigations were on to trace the exact locations of the illegal detention camps while maintaining that the police would definitly crack down on such places as soon as they are discovered.

The PPRO explained that the late Bashiru, whose corpse was uncovered at the Orogun illegal detention camp was taken to Alfa Ali for Quranic study earlier this month only to be found dead in the camp.

"Based on information, policemen stormed the place and met the lifeless body of the victim on ground after he was allegedly tortured by Alfa Ali," the PPRO stated adding that there were marks on the body of the victim, which showed that he was actually beaten to death.
