Lagos State Government yesterday said 50 houses at Jakande Estate in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area failed an integrity test conducted by its officials on the buildings.

The consequence according to government,is the demolition of the distressed buildings.

It explained that the demolition of the 50 houses, (two and three storey buildings) became necessary having failed the integrity test conducted by the State Raw Materials Testing Agency, following the collapse of a two-storey building in the estate in November 2012.Two persons died in the incident.

A top official of the state government said the collapse of the two-storey building led government to conduct integrity test on several buildings in the Estate.

To perfect the arrangement, a stakeholders’meeting, organised by the State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA was held with the Agency’s General Manager, Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu presiding.

The LASEMA boss told the meeting that the demolition was to avert disaster. Our reporter learnt that modalities for compensation and resettlement were then discussed by the parties involved .The stakeholders are to meet again on Monday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, Chairman, Ejigbo LCDA, Kehinde Bamigbetan,in reacting to the development, said the issue of relocation of affected residents should be discussed fully to enable every one involved knows where he stands.

Bamigbetan noted that the issue of insurance needed to be looked at when compensating the residents.

Two sisters, Toyin and Bukola, both in their late 20s, were killed when they building collapsed in the estate last November.

The building, situated at Block M20, Jakande Estate, Church Street, Oke-Afa, Lagos, collapsed at about 12 midnight killing the girls, instantly. Their mother was seriously injured.

Guess, adequate building standardization tests are carried out on the houses mark for demolition? And if yes, such practice should be extended to other parts of Lagos State. Other States should as a matter of utmost importance, borrow a leaf from Lagos State government in this regard.

If its for the safety of the people, then its a welcome development, because if the govt didn't pull it down,it will still collapse with time,by then it might be castatrophic.

Most of the building are old, then it should be extended to other parts of Lagos.

You're wrong.
If the house is demolished and they're compensated, that is excellent indeed!
It shows the government is sensitive in averting oncoming disaster.

You PDP sympathisers ought to cover your eyes in shame. Your employers should find people who understands english. If you are truly learned, you can read why the steps become extremely necessary and you also read that plans are in place to compensate the affected buildings and residents. Simple english you cant understand.

That is good, but is there going to be a provision for them? There are some other houses that you need to demolished, so do total checking in the whole houses of jakande estate.

The houses in Jakande Estate were bought from Lagos State Government. Hence, it has to compensate owners of such housing units if it decides to demolish them. Their lease agreement has not expired.

In fact, the residents of Jakande Estate are a little bit slack- they should have evacuated the defective buildings and sued the Lagos State Government for leasing to them substandard buildings.tongue

Na why the LCDA Chairman come dey speak with two mouths like sey im nor sabi the profile of the people wey dey live for im constituency. Na which kain insurance for Jakande flats wey im dey yarn so?
Let us remember these houses were built and delivered some 30 years ago by then UPN governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande aka Baba Kekere. They were bought mostly by civil servants and small scale business people aka petty traders. That is what an Action governor who understands democracy means:

Government of the people, by the people, for the people.

unlike the new masters of Alausa house, whose definition is:

Government of the elite, by the elite, for the elite PAID for by the MUGUcious masses/people.

Ode. Your comment is lame and pathetic. Dumbest comment. Your undue hatred for Tinubu and the amiable, progressive and visionary Fashola is baseless and unfounded. For your information,if Fashola or Tinubu wants a business estate, they know where and how to get better one in excellent location without making headlines

If the builds collapse,it will cause loss of lives, and the Govt will move to claim them without compensation. It is good now Govt should claim them to avoid loss of lives, and the occupants face relocation as compensation or in monetary terms.
For me,I will say it is a job well done on part of the Lagos state govt,,the occupants should cooperate to settle issues amicably.

Why the insult? Is fashola you father, brother, uncle? Or you are just an hired stimulator? There is no reason why i should argue with you, how many displaced makoko resident has you socalled stealing governor compensated? Do you think lagosians are fool? Just waiting for the revolution that will hit lagos alone by the time federal forces warn their agent not to interfere then we shall knoe who will leave lagos at the end of the day.

That means Jakande built substandard houses? A minus to baba kekere's administration. They should pack out and sue Lagos state government for selling poorly constructed houses to them and for endangering their lives.
