I just got this Broadcast message from a BB contact in Ireland and it goes thus.

Suicide has been on my mind a lot lately. Not that I would ever do it but the fact that so many teenagers around my age have done it. Erin and Shannon Gallagher are just two examples. They were as close as sisters could be. Enjoying life to the full until three teenagers from their school started to pick on Erin. They would write hate full things on her 'ask. fm' wall. Erin had enough so decided ending her life was the only option out. She didn't realise how many people she was leaving behind that loved her. Erin let those three teenagers that were more than likely jealous of her ruin her life and make her end it. Hundreds of friends and family turned up at the teens funeral, hundreds of people that loved and cared about her, all of them in tears after the loss of a close friend. Shannon, Erin's older sister was one of the many in floods of tears, heartbroken of the loss. She adored her baby sister and couldn't handle with the thought of living her life without her so she too ended her life leaving behind her mother and her baby brother. Again hundreds of mourners arrived at the funeral saying their last goodbyes to their good friend. A whole family was ruined because of the three pathetic teenagers who were not happy until they seen someone else upset. Suicide is not the option. People need to talk about things to let their pain out instead of thinking there is only one way out. Suicide rips families apart. Think about what will happen to other people before you leave people with only one option. SUICIDE IS NOT AN OPTION. RIP SHANNON & ERIN Bleep

Yes, suicide is not an option but a lot is in our hands, i mean we d parents, d friends, colleagues, neighbours, etc, we need to always edify ourselves, to always encourage ourselves, when something evil happen to anybody around us, let us build up d person by letting him/her know that he is not d first person to experience such, when our children misbehaves, let us correct them in love, with love and thru love, not condemning them, even, when they dont perform up to our expectation in their studies, let us still let them know that we still love them despite their shortcomings.......
Let us learn to always build up/edify one another, let us always positively affect one another.......by this and more good deeds, we can help to change d mind of someone who is thinking about suicide.
May God help us all.

Some people just don't appreciate the negative effect of cyber bullying on people's minds, especially the socially mal adjusted ones.
Nairaland is full of such people and there are no strict rules as regards that.

Just came across a very sensitive thread someone opened And you can imagine the kind of comments some Nairalanders posted.
Some were even suggesting suicide knowing fully well that individual must have been going through emotional trauma and needed help hence seeking people's advice and suggestions and this is part of what he got.

Na this one make sense pass.

There may have been a battle but there is always a war.
The one who wins the battle is not guaranteed victory in the war.

So Nairaland bullies may as well prepare for a long drawn war. Enough hostages have been taken in the battle field.

[b]Deal with a Bully and Overcome Bullying

helping bullied kids and teens and those who bully them

Unless you’ve directly experienced bullying, you may not realize just how devastating it can be, especially to a child or teenager. As well as being deeply hurtful, bullying can leave anyone feeling frightened, angry, depressed, and totally undermined. But bullying should never be tolerated. Whether you’re the one being bullied, or you’re a teacher or parent who thinks their child is being bullied or engaged in bullying behavior, there are steps you can take to deal with the problem.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is repeated aggressive behavior that can be physical, verbal, or relational. Boys frequently bully using physical threats and actions, while girls are more likely to engage in verbal or relationship bullying. The results are similar:

You are made to feel hurt, angry, afraid, helpless, hopeless, isolated, ashamed, and even guilty that the bullying is somehow your fault. You may even feel suicidal.
Your physical health is likely to suffer, and you are at a greater risk of developing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, or adult onset PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).
You’re more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school to avoid being bullied.
Need help with online or cyber-bullying?
If a bully is harassing, threatening, or humiliating you or someone you love by using computers, cell phones, or social networking sites, read Dealing With Cyber-Bullying

The most damaging aspect of bullying is its repetition. Bullies are often relentless, bullying over and over again for long periods of time. You may live in constant fear of where and when the bully will strike next, what they’ll do, and how far they’ll go.

Persin don kill me here o! grin grin grin
But honestly, you'll find out there are bullies everywhere.
Schools, churches, mosques, babalawo's, Nairaland, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, you name the place and they abound.
The most potent of them all is when a woman bullies with romance. Such relationships could become deadly with the male counterpart sometimes taking his life.

There was a 24 year old rapper who recently killed himself after being constantly bullied romantically.
So be careful people, better to stare clear and away from bullies or deal with them decisively.
Bullying is a civil way of killing someone.

[b]How to Spot and Stop Cyber Bullying

What is Cyber Bullying

Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and involves an imbalance of power or strength. Usually, it is repeated over time. Traditionally, bullying has involved actions such as: hitting or punching (physical bullying), teasing or name-calling (verbal bullying), or intimidation through gestures or social exclusion. In recent years, technology has given children and youth a new means of bullying each other.

Cyber bullying, which is sometimes referred to as online social cruelty or electronic bullying, can involve:
Sending mean, vulgar, or threatening messages or images;
Posting sensitive, private information about another person;
Pretending to be someone else in order to make that person look bad;
Intentionally excluding someone from an online group
(Willard, 2005).

Children and youth can cyberbully each other through:
E-mails,
Instant messaging,
Text or digital imaging messages sent on cell phones,
Web pages,
Web logs (blogs),
Chat rooms or discussion groups, and
Other information communication technologies.

Suggestions for parents

Adults seldom are present in the online environments frequented by children and youth. Therefore, it is extremely important that adults pay close attention to the cyber bullying and the activities of children and youth when using these new technologies.

Tips to help prevent cyber bullying:
Keep your home computer(s) in easily viewable places , such as a family room or kitchen.
Talk regularly with your child about on-line activities he or she is involved in. Talk specifically about cyber bullying and encourage your child to tell you immediately if he or she is the victim of cyber bullying, cyberstalking, or other illegal or troublesome on-line behavior.
Encourage your child to tell you if he or she is aware of others who may be the victims of such behavior.
Explain that cyber bullying is harmful and unacceptable behavior. Outline your expectations for responsible online behavior and make it clear that there will be consequences for inappropriate behavior.

Although adults must respect the privacy of children and youth, concerns for your child’s safety may sometimes override these privacy concerns. Tell your child that you may review his or her on-line communications if you think there is reason for concern.
Consider installing parental control filtering software and/or tracking programs, but don’t rely solely on these tools.

Tips for dealing with cyber bullying that your child has experienced:

Because cyber bullying can range from rude comments to lies, impersonations, and threats, your responses may depend on the nature and severity of the cyber bullying. Here are some actions that you may want to take after-the-fact.

Strongly encourage your child not to respond to the cyber bullying.

Do not erase the messages or pictures. Save these as evidence.

Try to identify the individual doing the cyber bullying. Even if the cyberbully is anonymous (e.g., is using a fake name or someone else’s identity) there may be a way to track them through your Internet Service Provider. If the cyber bullying is criminal (or if you suspect that it may be), contact the police and ask them to do the tracking.
Sending inappropriate language may violate the “Terms and Conditions” of e-mail services, Internet Service Providers, web sites, and cell phone companies. Consider contacting these providers and filing a complaint.

If the cyber bullying is coming through e-mail or a cell phone, it may be possible to block future contact from the cyberbully. Of course, the cyberbully may assume a different identity and continue the bullying.
Contact your school. If the cyber bullying is occurring through your school district’s Internet system, school administrators have an obligation to intervene. Even if the cyber bullying is occurring off campus, make your school administrators aware of the problem. They may be able to help you resolve the cyber bullying or be watchful for face-to-face bullying.
Consider contacting the cyberbully’s parents. These parents may be very concerned to learn that their child has been cyber bullying others, and they may effectively put a stop to the bullying. On the other hand, these parents may react very badly to your contacting them. So, proceed cautiously. If you decide to contact a cyberbully’s parents, communicate with them in writing — not face-to-face. Present proof of the cyber bullying (e.g., copies of an e-mail message) and ask them to make sure the cyber bullying stops.

Consider contacting an attorney in cases of serious cyber bullying. In some circumstances, civil law permits victims to sue a bully or his or her parents in order to recover damages.

Contact the police if cyber bullying involves acts such as: Threats of violence
Extortion
Obscene or harassing phone calls or text messages
Harassment, stalking, or hate crimes
Child pornography

If you are uncertain if cyber bullying violates your jurisdiction’s criminal laws, contact your local police, who will advise you.

Suggestions for educators
Educate your students, teachers, and other staff members about cyber bullying, its dangers, and what to do if someone is cyberbullied.
Be sure that your school’s anti-bullying rules and policies address cyber bullying.
Closely monitor students’ use of computers at school.
Use filtering and tracking software on all computers, but don’t rely solely on this software to screen out cyber bullying and other problematic on-line behavior.

Investigate reports of cyber bullying immediately. If cyber bullying occurs through the school district’s Internet system, you are obligated to take action. If the cyber bullying occurs off-campus, consider what actions you might take to help address the bullying: Notify parents of victims and parents of cyberbullies of known or suspected cyber bullying.
Notify the police if the known or suspected cyber bullying involves a threat.
Closely monitor the behavior of the affected students at school for possible bullying.

Talk with all students about the harms caused by cyber bullying. Remember — cyber bullying that occurs off-campus can travel like wildfire among your students and can affect how they behave and relate to each other at school.
Investigate to see if the victim(s) of cyber bullying could use some support from a school counselor or school-based mental health professional.

Contact the police immediately if known or suspected cyber bullying involves acts such as: Threats of violence
Extortion
Obscene or harassing phone calls or text messages
Harassment, stalking, or hate crimes
Child pornography

How To Deal With Cyber Bullying?

Cyberbullying is when a child, teen or a person is tormented, harassed, threatened, embarrassed or targeted by another child, teen or person using technology such as internet, mobile phone and various other technologies. Cyberbullying is nothing but the use of technology to bully other people. Coping with it can be difficult because it can happen at any time of the day.

Being the victim of cyber bullying can put an unnecessary stress on a child or teenager. With the ever increasing technological advancements, cyber bullying is reaching to the whole new level. So, as a parent, it becomes necessary for you to protect your child from cyber bullying.

If your child is victim of cyber bullying, you can help them by encouraging to do some things against cyber bullying. Tell them to save any bullying emails, images or text messages they receive. Make a note of date and time when the images and messages were sent, along with the details about the sender.

You should report the instances of cyber bullying to internet service providers and mobile phone companies who can trace the cyber bullies. Try to make sure that the school of your child is aware of what is happening to the students as well as report serious bullying, such as threats of a sexual or physical nature, to the police.

If you think that your child should get justice and the cyber bully must be punished, there are certain judicial laws available to teach him a lesson. There are number of laws for educational institutes that harbour the cyber bullies. These institutes msut take serious action against those found guilty in such cases.

In terms of dealing with your child and to help him or her get out of the effect that the cyber bully has left on him, you can sought help from a professional. Try to console them that they are not alone and there are many children that have been subjected to such horrendous stuff.

However, the cyber bullies need to be taught the lesson which can reduce the incidence of such behavior.
