In A Multi-tribal State, Should Any Tribe Lay Claim To Power? by vanstanzy(m): 4:04pm On Jan 07, 2013
Early this year, when some streets in Abuja, the nations federal capital territory were decorated with the campaign pictures of our current president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the AREWA consultative forum came with this; North Ready To Chase Jonathan Out Of Power In 2015 - Arewa. My question is, on what grounds? Is GEJ a Chadian or a Cameroonian to warrant such statement? I for one am not an ardent fan of GEJ, but as a full-fledged citizen of this country with no known criminal records, no one can deny him the right of contesting for the exalted office. Especially when by law, he is just serving his first term in office. The statement credited to the National Publicity Secretary of the CNPP, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, that: “All we demand is that there should be free, fair and transparent elections in 2015; most importantly, that the President should not either covertly or overtly use his high office to manipulate the electoral process.” Is in good light and expected. In contrast to Mallam Maiyaki Idris statement that; “North ought to hold political power, but the North now is nothing in Nigeria”. This statement alone is very unfortunate and raises much suspicion.
Let it be known and shouted at the roof top that Nigeria as a nation belongs to every Nigerian, and so all well-meaning citizens of Nigeria have an unreserved right of contesting election, being elected and ruling. Nigeria doesn’t belong to any one tribe, the mistake of thinking in that fashion should be jettisoned for the good of the country.
What we all should be seeking is a Leader that will come on board and change the fortunes of Nigeria for the better, a visionary leader with a proven track record, thus putting Nigeria in the world map once again. Like one writer wrote, “Keep sentiment aside, to drive forward the nation!”
