According to the Nigerian President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, Nigerian troops will land on Malian soil before next week to fight insurgents. Mali is battling with an internal security problem in which insurgents are poised to take over the capital city of Bamako. The insurgents are already in full control of the northern part of the country.

On Monday, President Jonathan stated that Nigerian soldiers will be deployed to the desert country to help restore peace. Regional behemoth, Nigeria is also battling an insecurity problem in which over 3,000 Nigerians have lost their lives to activities of the Boko Haram sect. (Isn't charity supposed to start at home? Will overstretching your scarce resources not have dire consequences?)

President Jonathan gave this assurance in the Federal Capital Territory during a cocktail ceremony with members of the diplomatic corps. He stated that it was imperative for Nigeria to help fight the extremists since it can have a ripple effect and consume the entire subregion (what do you think? Does he have a point there?). Hear him:

“We are confronted presently with a situation in Mali, let me assure you and the global community that as a nation we will work with other nations to make sure that the problem in Mali is solved.
“Already our technical team are already in Mali so definitely the Nigerian troops will be in Mali before next week.
“Of course we members of ECOWAS  are meeting this weekend. Our expectation is that by next week most other ECOWAS countries that pledged troops would have sent them so that our men will be on ground to assist Mali to liberate the country.

“We can no longer surrender any part of the globe to extremism, because it doesn’t pay and we don’t know the next victim. We must collectively discourage individuals or group of individuals that will take laws in to their hands and make the world a place that is not safe for all of us”.

This is wishing the Nigerian soldiers a safe journey and the best of luck.
