please auto gurus I have a problem which I need solution to. I am not an auto expert but I will try as much as possible to articulate the points in a lay man manner. I took delivery of a tokunbo Toyota Camry 2001 l4 engine yesterday. In the course of checking everything today, I noticed that each time I on the ignition, the engine fan will start blowing. from what I have heard and read, this is abnormal. I took a closer look at the engine, and I saw a wire that is unplugged. I plugged it to the appropriate place provided. Immediately, the fan stopped blowing. I concluded that must be the connection to the thermostat. However, within 10 minutes of plugging the socket, smoke started coming out of the engine. I quickly unplugged the socket and the fan started blowing and the smoke stopped. Again, I plugged the socket back and the fan stopped. I put the a/c on and the fan started immediately. My understanding is when the thermostat is in use, the fan will not start immediately when the ignition is turned on. But will start when the engine gets hot to a certain point. But mine seem not to work like that. Auto gurus please help. Though my story is long, but its necessary to give every details. |

Deprofessional: Vehicle must have overheated in the past and the thermistor (wire you connected) disconnected to ensure the fans run steady. For a car that old it is not uncommon to find a defective thermistor. New technology employs the use of Coolant temp sensors that send information to engine ecu that trigger fan operation. Verify thermistor is functional, ensure radiator is ok. To test thermistor, plug that wire back, watch temp guage, if the fan comes up before the temp crosses the half mark then thermistor is working. If it does not come up and temp crosses the half mark, it is defective. If temp crosses the halfmark and fans come on and stay on for more than 60secs, car might be overheating. Try this and get back to us. |

Deprofessional: Whether engine is hot or cold, once the AC is switched on, both fans will start blowing When engine is cold and has not reached optimum temperature no fan is supposed to start blowing When engine has passed the optimum temperature and is. Moving towards +5degree or more one fan starts blowing When one fan cannot keep the temperature closer to the optimum and the coolant temperature is getting to boiling point, the second fan switches on to assist, this happens mostly when car has run for hours in heavy traffic. The fan can stop rolling and Temperature Guage reduce from the optimum point when one is doing highway driving ie doing around 100km held for 10minutes, the natural breeze created from these steady high speed will cause heat transfer from the system to the environment causing heat loss so the radiator is getting cooled naturally. Now engine is only supposed to smoke from exhaust, if the smoke is colorless/transparent and stops when engine is getting hot, it's actually steaming not smoking it's a sign the engine is in good condition (it may just steam for 5 minutes or less) steaming Is also noticed frequently when it's raining or whether is extremely low (harmattan, snow) Any other smoke color, black, blue, Ash, sooth etc then your engine is faulty visit your nearest technician for a diagnosis of the issue If the smoke is from the bonnet area, then fluid is getting to hot metals (exhaust manifold) a technician will have to check to know if it's engine oil, atf etc, if it's coming from the radiator and looks like steam, then your cooling system is OPEN mode instead of closed loop. That's are disaster waiting to happen. |

GAZZUZZ: GAZZUZZ, thanks a lot. you are indeed a guru when it comes to auto. However, I feel disappointed by you today. I called in the morning and requested for your address. You promised to send it to me but you didn't I called again, and you promised to send it again . You failed the second time. Even when I told you I was in a car wash you can send the address so I can start coming. You promised again, and I had to stop the guys washing the car, yet I did not see you message. Though, you may have been very busy today, however, I felt very bad. If you work on Sundays, I wouldn't mind coming tomorrow so you can check the ride for me I hardly have time on week days that's why I wanted to see you today Thanks again for responding to my post. |

Hello auto gurus, I would like to seek your expert opinion on these 2 issues I have with my Toyota camry 2003: 1. I observed recently that the car jerks whenever the gear is engaged and I completely press the brake pedal or when I slow down to a stop during motion. The jerking continues as long as I have my leg on the brake pedal but stops when I put the gear in Park. Some times the engine will go off after jerking for a while. 2. I checked my engine oil this morning and discovered it's almost halfway between full and empty. I serviced the car about 2 months ago and since then I've done about 1000km. What could make engine oil reduce without leakage? Thanks |

Nuges11: For number one to avoid trail and error, you need to scan engine and transmission to ascertain where the fault is. For number two some Toyota engines of that year are known for burning oil like no man's business. But let's know your location, what engine type I4 or V6 and what oil brand and weight you bought to service the car and also your current mileage. Also throttling down and running engine at high revs causes engine oil Burning away in some Toyota engines. 2 Likes |

I sincerly was about to send you a message, but each time I tried a call came in, and it lasted so long I forgot the last thing I was about to do. Hello house, please who knows the market price of Tokunbo Toyota camry 2002 model (big light)? |
Re: Thread For Toyota Users And Lovers by timifakay(m): 5:50am On Sep 19, 2017 |
Nuges11: 1. Is the check engine light on? You need a scan and diagnosis to confirm the exact cause of the problem. 2. Oil shortage could be due to oil burning up in the combustion chamber. Please, always carry some oil in your booth to top with until you can provide a solution. |
Re: Thread For Toyota Users And Lovers by nurey(m): 6:44am On Sep 19, 2017 |
Nuges11: Oil. Brand and weight is questionable. Your manufacturer recommended is 5w20 or 5w30. Timifakay is in ibadan meet up with him for proper diagnosis |

Auto experts and professors, I noticed this about my Camry 01 l4. Yesterday, after fuelling, the fuel gauge moved to the middle indicating half tank. My worry is that the fuel gauge pointer remains at the middle even after the ignition is switched off. My understanding is that the fuel gauge pointer will come down when the ignition is off. Is this an issue I should worry about? what could be the cause and how can I remedy it? |
Re: Thread For Toyota Users And Lovers by nurey(m): 8:17am On Sep 24, 2017 |
Deprofessional: Toyota fuel indicator Guage isn't like Honda that sleeps while ignition is off and wakes while ignition is On, whether your car is on or off Toyota Guage will remain at the exact reading of your fuel, it doesn't work with ignition or battery it is a static indicator. |
Re: Thread For Toyota Users And Lovers by arantess: 7:10pm On Sep 24, 2017 |
nurey:Hmmm, which Toyota exactly cos my corolla fuel guage sleeps when ignition is off |
Re: Thread For Toyota Users And Lovers by nurey(m): 7:34pm On Sep 24, 2017 |
arantess: Don't be alarmed, not all Toyota will behave the same way, if yours go down then it's not faulty as even same car models and year have same components but different manufacturers. |
