Re: English Language And Literature Online Tutorial For Jamb by ahika(m): 1:33pm On Sep 23, 2014
As we all know JAMB registration started Sept 15th of this month and it'll be better to start preparing for the exam now that time is still on our sides considering the fact that nearly 60% of people who wrote 2014/2015 JAMB exam got below 200. Some students were of the notion that JAMB propitiated the CBT candidates and turned a red eye to the PPT 'jambites' but let me bring it to your notice that all those are misconceptions. It is a fact that JAMB do mark people down but ''once your original score is high(maybe 250-280), you'll never get below 200''. You can quote me anywhere.

So let us not frolick with our time, instead let us maximize it by reading avidly both offine and ONLINE. I will be posting some lessons and questions on English language topics and you all can ask questions, contribute or pick any topic you think you find difficult on English Language.

PrinceCEE, Fortunate017, Fembleez and other 2014/2015 erudite jambites, you can come in and make this thread lively once again cheesy

Today's topic is STRUCTURAL TAG
Before we begin, I'll like to give explicit explanation on tags :

=> What is a tag?
Tag is a word or phrase that is added to a sentence for emphasis. It can be in form of
a question i.e question tag, e.g
#is it?
#aren't you? Etc

=>How do we form tags?
To form tag strucures, a statement and a question must come together. And these are the rules for joining them together.

RULE 1. When a statement is positive, the tag/question following it must be negative.

You may ask, how can I identify positive and negative statements? Don't worry because it is a very simple thing. Here
it goes:
Re: English Language And Literature Online Tutorial For Jamb by ahika(m): 1:47pm On Sep 23, 2014

#A POSITIVE statement or question does not have the not particle e.g

>I am happy
>Tunde is a notorious thief
>is it?
(these are positive statements because of the absence of not

# A statement or question is negative if it contains the not particle e.g
>I am not happy
>Tunde is not a notorious thief
>isn't it? Etc.

I hope you now can identify positive and negative statements and questions? Sure you can

Now let us go back to the rule where I stated that ''when a statement is positive, the tag/question following it must be negative''. These are some examples:

a We are going on holiday (positive statement),

aren't we? (negative question)

Did you see how ''we'' and ''are'' are transposed? That is how we form tags

b The girl is listening (positive statement),

isn't she? (negative question)
Re: English Language And Literature Online Tutorial For Jamb by ahika(m): 1:53pm On Sep 23, 2014
RULE 2: When there is a negative statement, there should be a positive question tag following it e.g.,
a, She can not do the job (negative statement), can she? (positive statement)

b.Obi will not fight again (negative statement),

will he? (negative he).

Pls do not repeat proper nouns in question tags, instead use the pronouns it, she, he, they, we, I etc, eg. Instead of will obi? Use will he?, instead of can ada? use can she?

DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

RULE 3: loading...
Re: English Language And Literature Online Tutorial For Jamb by ahika(m): 1:59pm On Sep 23, 2014
RULE 3:if there is no auxillary or helping verb (i.e., is/was/are/were/am; do/does/did; has/have/had, will-would/may-might/shall-should etc.) in the statement, use do or did or does to form the tag. For example:

(a) She hates cooking rice

would you say: haten't she?

NO! Instead you use doesn't i.e doesn't she?

Note that:
does goes with singular nouns and pronouns e.g She does, he does, the cat doesn't etc

do goes with plural nouns and pronouns e.g we do, they don't, our children don't etc.,

did is the past tense of both does and did

let me give one more example:

(b)We spoke to the family, didn't we?

I hope it is now comprehensive?

Re: English Language And Literature Online Tutorial For Jamb by ahika(m): 2:10pm On Sep 23, 2014
RULE 4: I am, usually has the tag aren't I? and used to, has a question tag with, did or didn't for example:

> I am your friend, aren't I?

>she used to follow my mum to the market, didn't she?
Re: English Language And Literature Online Tutorial For Jamb by ahika(m): 2:14pm On Sep 23, 2014
RULE 5: If the statement involves a mild command such as let us/let's... the tag shoul be shall + the subject of the clause, for example:

>Let's stay at home today, shall we ?

RULE 6: Whenever there is used as the subject of the clause, you should return there in the question tag, e.g.,

> There are many mansions in heaven,

aren't there?

RULE 7: If must or should or ought to is used in a sense that means necessary, the statement or question that follows will be need or needn't, for example:

>Must he greet his teacher by prostrating? (is it necessasy?)

No, he needn't (not; no, he mustn't)

(culled from The Invisible Teacher by Dele Ashade. Get this book and thank me later)
Re: English Language And Literature Online Tutorial For Jamb by ahika(m): 2:18pm On Sep 23, 2014
RULE 8: When do you mind is used, it means do you think it is bad if... for example

Mr. A. Do you mind a cup of tea (do you think it is bad if I give you a piece of cake?

Mr. B. No, I don't means No I don't think it is bad if you give me while,

Mr. C. Yes, I do means, Yes I think it is bad if you give me.

So Mr. A will give only Mr. B a cup of tea.

RULE 9: Do not use not with yes or a positive idea with no when you're asked a question that demands a yes or no answer. E.g

Mr. A. You don't like to dance? (i.e, do you like to dance?)

Mr. B. Yes , I do

Mr. C. No, I don't

I'm done with structural tags, you can ask any question, elucidate more on the topic or start a topic you're good at
