Msc Or Job by kaycay(m): 1:20pm On Jan 31, 2013
My name is Azeez and i need your opinion nairalanders, I just completed ny Nysc in oct 2012 and i was supposed to go for my masters by sept 2012 but for a serious accident i had then, so i served in a Big firm and i was retained after nysc as an intern, Now the intern programme runs for a year and its more like a contract with no renewal except there is a vacancy in the departmenmt, In the event of no vacancy by nov this year the contract will be terminated, now i initially planned on goingto uk for my msc this january but i changed my mind, a few of the interns with me in the firm have actually resigned to go for their masters, Moreover the salary of the intern is not much too and it ends after a year like i said precisely Nov th is year. Now my parents are rich enough to comfortably sponsor me for my msc without me having to work there and i plan to msc in software engineering in robert Gordon university, i have no intention of staying after a year, i just want my msc degree, my parents have agreed to sponsor me with a monthly pocket money of 650 pounds,

Now am torn between going by august or looking for a job when my intern scheme's expires

i have to start the processing now if i want to go for the masters. so what do you think i should do because i am only 23 years old.

i also have the Big firm work experience 2years on my cv(MTN)

Please advise me,its giving me sleepless nytes

I suggest you make your application now, while it is still opened. By Sept( Resumption Date) you would have made up your mind on either of the two options:to continue with the job or accept the admission offer. If you don't apply now,it leaves you with only one option come September.

Hey friend, I'm really happy you brought something like this to this thread, I had a situation like this and I went for Msc which is the best decision I have made in my life.. I studied Engineering and I can never regret it.
My advice to you is for you to go for you Msc and By GOD grace you would get a better offer when you get back.

If you state the name of the company you intend doing the intern with, people will be equipped to advise you better.

He stated it, and he said MTN.

That's not true. All private organizations generally promote staffs based on their performance, and not higher degrees. There may be very few exception but it's rare.

@OP, it all depends on your career goals and objectives. There is no straight answer to that enquiry. Decision still lies with you. You may need too do a little more elaboration to get more precise answers.

I meant right now am currently working as an intern after my NYSC last year oct. The new Msc session starts september 2013.the intern scheme runs for a year and i started lastyear.it was just a scheme by mtn to replace corpers since the FG refused 2 give them corpers and it ends by october. There is little or no hope for renewal for majority of the interns there. We were 36 interns in total @ the start of the scheme in december. 10 of us have resigned to go for their msc in usa with the jan and march batch. I am planning on going to scotland with the aug/sept batch. As i said my parents can comfortably afford it with no need for me to work thru out the 1 year.. Besides am 23 years old so thats Y i am torn between doing it now or losing the oppurtunity and looking for a job again when my intern scheme expires by october.

Ps- the salary is little and i have 2 years experience in the telecoms industry considerin i served with them.. My superior is currently some1 with a msc degree but zero experience.

Yea, I understand your story. Like I said, it depends on what you want. Explaining clearly your career objectives will help you get precise answers. Do you have an engineering degree? Do you want to continue in the telecoms sector, or do you prefer to move into another sector? Do you want to go into software engineering? Do you like the academic world? What are your career plans? How do you want to see yourself in the next 5-10 years?
Answers to these questions (especially the last one) can help me advise you accurately.

thanks for offering to advise me. i currently hold a degree in information technology with a certification in ccna and oracle. am currently preparing for my ITIL(information infrastructure library exams) and up next on my list is the sun solaris and some microsoft certfications, i currently work with the MTN procurement depatment and i plan to get a certification in advanced procuremwent and purchasing soon. I have the intention of doing a MSC Degree in software enginering or information datamanagement or information systems.i would like to stay in the telecoms sector, programming and software is not my interest though am a expert in vb.net and asp.net.

i actually like my current procurement work cos i deal with mainly network data and vas planning section though i wont mind being in the IT management section or sector. strictly telecoms, oil and gas or It management. in the next 5 years, i see myself being a senior specialist in the Telecoms sector

Well, with 2 years relevant experience plus more than 2 major IT certifications, I don't see why you should rush into going for masters. I may not be an IT professional but I know that experience and certifications count more than masters degree in IT/telecoms industry. I think getting relevant exposure should be your first option before thinking about masters.
Maybe I'm speaking out personal bias because I have never believed in the bandwagon view of going to masters out of idleness. Also, personal career experience has taught me that a masters degree is overrated in Nigerian corporate world. Though an engineering degree in your masters may give you an edge in such an industry.
For me, go for job first. Masters should be secondary especially in the IT/telecoms industry.

With the 2 years experience you have already in Nigeria, I would advise you to go for the master and become Gold. You are not doing it with no experience my brother. Just try as much as possible to get some certification in your field as well over there. U̶̲̥̅̊ will surely get a better job coming back because you have the experience already and a foreign certificate to back it up. Grab the chance my broda.

Both paths are suitable: masters or job, especially with 2 years relevant experience. The only reason I would tilt a little towards the masters is the added engineering degree. That can give him an edge in job search. Both paths are okay, OP.
