Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria located in the Federal Capital Territory and is divided into districts all of which fall under the administration of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) which is the equivalent of a local government you find in other states in Nigeria. Don’t mistake Abuja with FCT which is the entire region comprising Abuja and 5 other Municipal Areas namely Gwagwalada, Abaji, Kuje, Bwari and Kwali.

History

Abuja officially became the capital city of Nigeria on 12th December 1991 when the Federal Government moved the administrative capital from Lagos to Abuja. Prior to that as far back as 1976 a military decree was promulgated to establish the FCT by the regime of Murtala Muhammed.

Economy

There are very few factories mostly involved in Agro-allied processing and small scale manufacturing. Most of the factories are food related such as bakeries, confectioneries and plastic making companies. There are a lot of construction companies in Abuja who work with the Federal government in developing infrastructure and properties. Most businesses in Abuja are small and medium scale businesses which render retail and trading services to residents. Hotels and hospitality services are very common also but Abuja is still to a large extent a ‘civil service’ city with the government services being the mainstay.

Districts

Based on the Abuja master plan, the city is divided into three main segments based on phases of development. The phase 1 which is the main part of the city consists; Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse, Garki, Guzape and Central Area. In all there are at least 38 main districts in Abuja city and many satellite towns and settlements such as Kubwa, Nyanya, Lugbe, Mpape and Dei-Dei to mention a few.

Land Marks

Some easily recognizable landmarks of the city include; Abuja City gate, University of Abuja, Aso Rock, Gurara Falls, Apo hills, the National Assembly complex, Millennium Park and Banex Plaza to mention a few. There are countless more to know.

Geography

The geography of Abuja like many north central towns and cities is a mix of hilly and level ground. There are a number of hills and rocks around the city especially in Jahi, Maitama, Asokoro, Wuye and Apo while others have slopy land surfaces such as Gwarinpa and Mpape to mention a few.

Weather

The weather of Abuja is often a source of distress for people from cooler climes as the weather is hot especially during the dry season starting from December when temperatures could be as high as 35 degrees Celsius and could continue till April when the rainy season sets in.
