Please guys, i just got out of a heated argument with some friends of mine. They said it is impossible 2 change gear while driving an automatic vehicle. Please could someone kindly explain the driving principle of the Honda Acura mdx 2007 model. Because its obvious it has 5 Driving gears(D1 - D5) and it is an automatic vehicle. I really want to know how it is driven....d pics are shown below

What do you want to change it to? If you're reversing, shift it down to R...if you're driving forward, shift it to D. Some automatic models come with a manual shift too, that's when you can change gears. But in an automatic, D is used for driving...no shifting required! My 2cents..

what i actually want to know is how the gears(D1 -D5) are used. Is it changed like a manual transmission?

Yes u can shift this gear on motion to any speed you want, except (R) and (P) you need to apply break to zero before using the R and P, D1 = gear 1 manual, D2= gear 2 manual etc.

normally, the basic term 4 automatic is that it changes gear itself(ie D1 - D5), so is there a special name for this type of automatic?

Unlike the PRND type with + and - in some cases the D1-D5 gives you more options in the following scenarios considering that it is an AWD SUV.

In the regular D the vehicle does everything with a dip in rpm or you may not get the required pick up rate despite pressing hard on your gas pedal.

1. D1-D2 is more useful when you are stuck and trying unditch yourself. You are trying to recreate H2 which only available on 4WD.

2. D1-D2 is also useful when you are going down a steep hill and will put less stress on your transmission while stepping on your brakes.

3. D3 is more useful if while trying to overtake a lorry you had to suddenly drop speed and need to pick up again. the drop in rpm that is experienced and your needing to accelerate again to complete your overtaking some Ds will experience a slow pick up rate (This has caused some head-on collisions by overtaking vehicles whose driver thought they could make it).

U need not to have involved ursef in such argument. Maybe they are only used to d auto transmission form of cars. It is possible to change transmission. But remember dis is naija. D changing of d automatic transmission is mostly dependenton d smoothness and texture of d road. Like for instance u can't use d "D" on a white sand beach. In a situation like d white sand beach u nid use the 4 wheel drive wch means d four tyres roll at d same time so as to move easily and this has to be done also wit changing transmission other wise u r gonna get stocked. In summary changing of automatic transmission can b dependent on d nature of d road. Thanx

so from the picture above, u can see that d car has D1 - D5....please what do each of the D's stand for?......or is it the same with manual transmission?

Well this is my little contribution. I think for any vehicle that has a provision for selecting D1,D2, D3 and above means u have the flexibility of selecting the highest drive ratio the gear box can actually be operated under any driving condition. Take for instance you select a D3 on your vehicle, that means that no matter how much u apply(open) the throttle, the five speed auto transmission will never exceed its third gear. This enables more torque to be available at lower vehicle speeds to tackle slippery or hilly terrain. So for vehicles having that option you can select the highest gear u would want the vehicle not to exceed in the case D1 meaning u can't exceed the first gear no matter how hard you floor the gas. If alternatively you want the auto transmission to have the liberty of sellecting all possible drive ratios you choose D.
