The Federal Government is considering plans to construct a 1,687-bed-hospital, valued at $650m in the Federal Capital Territory to discourage medical tourism in the country.

The project is expected to be completed between 24 and 36 months.

But to ensure the materialisation of the hospital, to be named Abuja Medical City, it has to scale the Federal Government’s procurement process.

A representative of IBT Group, promoters of the hospital project, Mr. Daniel Toledano, stated this in Abuja on Tuesday after making a presentation on the project to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu.

According to him, the hospital, which will be the first of its kind in Africa, will make Nigeria a medical tourists centre in Africa in terms of capacity and personnel to cater for, at least, 2,040,000 patients at a time.

He stressed that the IBT Group, which will handle the project alongside Sumolex and KMD Architects, had over 35 years experience in turnkey projects in 21 countries across the globe.

While Nigeria loses over $500m yearly to medical tourism abroad, he said capital plight per patient ranged between $20,000 and $40,000 per trip.

He said, “The objectives of the project include provision of the first level three medical care facility in Nigeria and to relocate high-complexity medical care to Abuja Medical City.”

The proposed 1,687-bed hospital, the minister said, would include 763 beds for Trauma Centre;300 beds for Amenities care pavilion; 524 beds for Pediatric section and 100 beds for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation section.

Also speaking, the spokesman for IBT Group of companies, Mr. Dumebi Kachikwu, said the Abuja Medical City, which will become operational six months to its completion date, will cost $650m.

Defining the operational model for the proposed hospital, Dr. Isioma Okobah, a Nigerian doctor based in Atlanta-Georgia in the United States of America, said, “We can attract our doctors in the Diaspora back home and there won’t be need for medical tourism abroad because they will provide the same services here and get the same pays they are getting now.”

The minister also said the proposal was in line with the plan of the Federal Government towards checking medical tourism abroad and providing world class healthcare services for Nigerians.

A positive step in a positive direction. This GEJ administration is not getting enough credit for all it is trying to give to Nigerians. A country that has been regressive and almost at the precipice of dark abyss is gradually being brought back to a constructive and focused existence. I keep saying it that the culmination of all the Federal govt. projects between now and first quarter of 2015 will make Nigerians realise that those who kept us in this position of backwardness are feeding their emotions with lies and deceit in order to come back and assume the same nonchalant positions and postures on the affairs of this great nation. Kudos to GEJ and Onyebuchi Chukwu. We are all waiting.

Well spoken. I actually consider this the best administration this country has ever had. The main difference between this administration and previous ones is that even though there is corruption, which all administrations have been guilty of, they are still doing tangible things in office.

But why MUST it be in Abuja? Shouldn't the Federal Government be thinking about how to spread development across the country? Why not construct SIX of these across the geo-political zones?

The effect of this will only be to make Abuja more and more attractive, whereas true development can only be driven from the grassroots.

This move might well prove counter-intuitive.

A very good idea. However the Nigerian Government should strive to do more. If another hospital as large as this one Is being developed in another part of Nigeria e.g Lagos or Delta It will be of great benefit not forgetting the revenue from it. Our leaders should have foresight and try to be innovative.

Have you asked yourself what happened to National Hospital Abuja? What happened to Abuja central hospital We do not lack Hospitals in the country, what we need is to expand on the existing ones and raise their standards.

Obasanjo came up with model Health Care centre distributed across the country with Federal Medical Centers and Teaching Hospitals to handle more complicated cases. Many States have Central Hospitals established in major towns and cities across the state. They too if their standards are raised will compliments the FMC and Teaching Hospitals.

you will agree with me that if it becomes a geo-political issue at the point, it will become bogus and amount to a white elephant project as has been the case with past administrations. The wise thing to do is to start the project at the centre and when it succeeds, take it down to the geopolitical zones. Mind you, the teaching hospitals round the federation are been upgraded as the national good governance tour has showcased in he zones visited, and the federal medical centres are no left out in this upward trend in upgrading our health facilities. This government has direction, GEJ and Onyebuchi Chukwu rocks.

Nah today, if they like, let them build 5000 bed. that won't stop them from going abroad for treatment. What is wrong with all our teaching hospital? Instead of them to equip the hospital they have now and pay those specialist doctor what they are being paid abroad.

They should used the money to buy equipment for cancer treatment so that our leaders will not travel abroad for treatment of cancer of the NOSE.

Useless govt, with retard people.

Nothing happened to them. Those hospitals are functioning adequately. Have you ever been in National Hospital Abuja? I doubt there is any equipment lacking in that place.

Here's the website:

Many of us who don't visit these places assume automatically that they're lacking in everything.

The govt just wants to build a BIGGER and BETTER hospital.

Another white elephant and the looting continues, na today?

I wonder why they're insulting our intelligence by saying 1 hospital will cater for 2 million patients at the same time because that's not possible. It has to be a typing mistake because its beyond ludicrous.

But wait, is it this proposed new hospital that'll discourage medical tourism? Hehe I no fit laugh
grin

OMG2013: I hope it is not an avenue to loot money

Well it is, has there been any project in Nigeria in recent memory with no loot route?

The problem with Nigeria is not building but maintaining this facilities, has anyone asked about the sham hospital constructed by Alao Akala former gov. of Oyo state, was the project completed,at what phase do we have the project now,Abuja stadium built with so much money is not being maintained, until we have maintenance culture in us then if they like they can build the moon i am very sure in Naija it would rust away

You are partially right, but why not the government take up more important projects like this one than Les important ones like the 16billion Vice presidents house project, this is only millions of Naira project, if you calculate the 16billion naira meant for a single house , you will see that it can give the 6 Geo political zones this great project with enough change remaining. Or how do you see it?

I get your point though, but do you see the figure laid out for one of these hospitals? ($650m).... 6 of those would cost about $4bn, that's about Adenuga's worth..... I agree with you nevertheless and I believe more would come after this one but its going to be systematically, maybe when this one done, two others would follow right off the back of its completion.
