a political association.
Major opposition parties — the All Nigeria
Peoples Party, Action Congress of Nigeria, All
Progressives Grand Alliance and the Congress
for Progressive Change — had recently
announced their merger to form APC.
The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC
chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, however, said,
“The last report I had was when they (APC)
said their merger committee was at work,
trying to draw up a logo and trying to
finalise the name.
“By law, we do not expect APC to come to
INEC. The political parties that are fusing
into another party will individually and
respectively come back to INEC, notifying us
that they are fusing into a party with a new
identity.
“Because there is no party with the APC on
INEC’s record, nobody called APC can contact
INEC. But ACN can contact INEC to announce
its merger with APC. Each constituent will
issue a notice to INEC; attached with the
resolution in their respective conventions
approving matter. It is the notice that will
prompt INEC to recall their individual
certificates and issue a joint certificate.”
He however said none of the parties forming
APC had yet to take the step. “I am not even
aware that any of them has called a national
convention,” Idowu added.
When asked if APC could be regarded as a
political association, he said, “More or less,
yes.”
