Extensive renovation work has begun at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos.

This puts to rest fears that President Goodluck Jonathan’s promise of action on the decrepit accommodation facilities in the college might take a long time to come to fruition.

Jonathan visited the college on January 18 and expressed surprise at the appalling state of the hostels.

He was, however, unhappy about a television report, which revealed the state of the institution.

Even though the President had promised immediate action on the college, some police cadets, who spoke with our correspondent one week after Jonathan’s visit, had said they doubted if the renovation would start any time soon.

But on Wednesday, when our correspondent visited the college, he counted about 15 hostel blocks being renovated simultaneously.

The old roofs, windows and doors of all the buildings have been dismantled and were being replaced by aluminium roofing sheets and sliding windows.

It was learnt that the renovation is being handled by the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers.

The joy of the policemen and cadets in the college was obvious as some of them told our correspondent that the renovation would greatly enhance their wellbeing.

“We knew the hostels would be renovated but we just did not expect it to be this soon. It is a good thing anyway because we can now be proud of the college in which we are receiving training,” a cadet, who pleaded anonymity, said.

A policeman, who told our correspondent that he was previously staying in one of the buildings being renovated, explained that the windows of his own block had been fitted.

“I am not sure when we will move back in. We are currently accommodated temporarily in other buildings that are not being renovated,” he said.

It was learnt that the renovation started some days ago after the Federal Government awarded the contract to the Army.

Many soldiers were seen all around the project area.

When the rot at the police college was exposed few weeks ago, the report was all over the place. Several threads detailing the graphics, pictures and video of the rot made the front page on NL.

But now that there's good news of renovation work at the Police College, its no news for the same persons that celebrated the rot earlier. Even the moderators have become blind, deaf and dumb.
Smh!

I'm particularly glad that the contract was awarded to the Nigerian army. This will save cost and ensure the project is delivered without delay.

The current Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has really transformed the Nigerian Army. I heard the army also won contract for road construction in Abia state.

Nigeria is changing!

Why don't you show pictures of renovation work? You want people to come and praise what they can not see especially when they saw the rot earlier, ko?

Does that make sense to you? Why do you wallow in self-pity like this?

Kudos to FG, if promises like this from past leaders were being fulfilled in no distant time, no matter how small since 1999 there would have been an appreciable change in the country. Glad the see Army coming into this.

So Punch has gone crazy to the extent that they'll report that renovation is going on when nothing is happening? How can Punch, which is pro-ACN report that work is going on when nothing is going on?

Moreover, do you need pictures to prove everything? How many reports on the front page right now have pictures as proof? Your post is simply senseless.

I'm angry at the attitude of some Nigerians who celebrate and promote negative news. And when confronted with their nefarious activities, these unpatriotic elements claim there are no positive news? The idea of no positive news only exist in the jaundiced imagination of these saddist because they systematically kill positive news.

Good news is no news in the mind of saddists.

Why is Gej trying to make his fellow PDP cronies look clueless here? Must he publicize the bad state of Police College before he goes ahead to rehabilitate the College? This man is exposing PDP for what they are in the hope of persuading gullible 9gerians that they will be voting him in and not PDP come 2015. He is sacrificing PDP rep for his selfish and PDP-unconstitutional ambition. . . .sucide mission.

@Bad belle moderators, who are undoubtedly anti-GEJ, this report is good for front page.

I'm now determined to fight the shamelessly partisan moderators on NL. I've seen how you moved the thread about $1million and Beyonce to the front page at the dead of the night. All nefarious activities are done at the dead of the night. Similar thread about Fashola and Kardashin (or whatever) has been confined to the thrash can by the same shamelessly partisan moderators.

When will the moderators purge themselves of hate and stop taking sides?
