Basically, am from southern Nigeria; Edo state to be precise and I base in las vegas ( home of casinos ) in the United State of America. Every Sunday while in church on my native attires I look so different from others base on my dressing code, many times it's kind of draw so much attentions which before now was kind of like making me feel so nervous and uncomfortable especially when some white folks come around to ask me were I come from based on my outfits, I tell them from Nigeria "o that oil rich country" they reply and out of curiosity I ask them why re they asking me where am from, they reply ur dressing look odd. I just tell them no I don't look odd rather I look unique and as an African I need to dress like a royalty , also I remind them that we African have our own ways in which we live and that I stand on, though I wear normal casual most often.
The reasons am writing this is to tell my fellow nairalanders that wherever you are always represent were you come from no matter what, trying to be like those white folks only makes you deny your origin thereby making yourself inferior. I see some of our brothers here trying to change their ascent, I always kick against that because every nations got their ascents which identifies them and distinguishes them from others, no matter How you try to form their ascent they still know you are not part of them, so why not just be yourself rather than fooling yourself ; to me that makes you lost anyway because you are neither here nor there "look warm" always rep nija my people. . God bless Nigeria

With that mind-set you shouldn't have left Nigeria at all. Not wearing native attires does not make me inferior to the white folks, inferiority is all in the mind and you have one judging by your post.

The only way i can truly represent Nigeria anywhere i'am is to keep my hands off crime.

is it mandatory to wear native every single time you go to church?

and you're in a white church for that matter.

attention seeking?

wear native sometimes, wear other clothes at other times, have a balance.

and when you wear native, why get offended when people ask where you're from?

If you want to wear traditional clothing, be prepared that people will ask questions. For some Americans it may be odd, but it's simply different from the way people dress here. It sounds like your are new to the US? By all means wear what you like, and don't allow yourself to be irritated by their curiosity. Believe me, the bigger issue you will face is where you're from as opposed to what you wear! I'm wondering why do you "need to dress like a royalty"? Nigeria is a republic.

that is very true.
but it was still Judaism at that point.

Christianity was actually formed after Jesus was crucified,
long after the original Jews left Egypt.

Culture is dynamic. Some aspects of our culture are even at times copied from others. Once upon a time our ancestors walked almost nak.ed and saw nothing wrong with it. Now we are fully clothed and call it our culture to be well dressed. 200years from now, later generations might even ignorantly call our trouser and shirt traditional clothes.

Of course u gonna look odd because that is not their culture...If you dont want to look odd, vacate Las Vegas and condense powerfully at Auchi local government. There, nobody go dey ask u questions about wetin u wear - provided u still they wear the same thing u dey wear for Las Vegas o

The last time I wore traditional attire was in 2009 back in Nigeria, I'm more of a trackies kind of person due to the harsh weather environment I find myself living in. I don't consider an individual's choice of clothing to be a reflection of his/her level of patriotism, that argument is ridiculous.

Am damn proud of my Nigeria origin, yoruba to be precised, that's why I've decided never give my children any english name, but solely a native name with good meaning. I can't afford any neo colonization again, after all history taught me.

I don't like being too conspicous in gatherings and the traditional attire sometimes makes me feel like a clown especially when I visit some parts of asia.
So mostimes I just go with the saying " when you are in rome behave like the romans". That way I don't get unnecessary attention.

In South-east Nigeria, Ibos are very republican, and strongly believe in live and let live. Let the kite perch and the the eagle perch. The Ibos place a curse on whosoever would breach this peace and liberty.

So, there're Christians by choice, and Moslems also, who may never be able to impose jihad or sharia on anyone. Christianity is therefore as indigenous to the Ibo as any other manner of worship, as individuals may CHOOSE, especially without hurting the natural rights of others.

ON ACCENTS

The incumbent Senate President spoke recently on Tv, saying 'piss' is what the nation needs now. He meant 'peace'. Many Nigerians say seat when they mean sit. Torn is turn. Even in church you hear those that should know say omini potent instead of omnipotent.
Please let this Edo man not go around saying shursh for church, shange for change, and presuming nationalism. Its just being as wrong as many are on the streets of Nigeria. D o o.
