I think we can scale past this group. Our toughest opposition will be Etoile du sahel of Tunisia.

The original Oriental Derby in the Nigerian top flight will hold this Sunday between Enugu Rangers and Heartland. In recent years, Enyimba have often been associated with the Oriental Derby when they face either Rangers or Heartland but the roots of the Oriental Derby lies with two teams (Rangers and Heartland) who have appeared in the top flight more times than any other Nigerian football clubs.

Origin of this derby

The Oriental Derby got its name from the popular musical high-life band, Oriental Brothers, with the Old Imo State adopting the moniker 'Orient Stamp' that paved way for the biggest southeast football derby back in the 1970s into the 1980s.

In the 1970s the derby was between Enugu Rangers and Spartans, which later became Iwuanyanwu Nationale and now Heartland. Unfortunately the rivalry between the two sides have waned especially with the success of Enyimba in the turn of the Millenium leading to the Aba club winning six league titles, two Cups and two Caf Champions League titles.

Recent head-to-heads

In the last 10 years, Heartland have had the edge over their Orient rivals in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) including winning 3-1 at Rangers in March 2009 though their faithful will claim that the game was played in Nnewi and not Enugu. But Rangers were at home irrespective of how their most loyal fans feel.

Heartland and Rangers produced end-to-end stuff in that match. Okey Nwadike did put Heartland in front inside 22 minutes with a solo effort before John Chibuike levelled the game 16 minutes later.

But Heartland knocked down their Oriental rivals with two late goals from Damien Udeh and Joshua Abaje.

Besides that 3-1 win, Heartland have avoided defeat at Rangers three other times in their last nine visits.

Current squads & form guides

It appears the Naze Millionaires have hit that stride of 2009 after ending a four-year hoodoo of no wins on the road at 3SC this season. Players like Isah Akor, Jolly Osas, Happy Okuoka, Yau Hassan and David Tyavkase have injected pace, steel and guile into Heartland's style.

Captain Chinedu Efugh, Emmanuel Olowo, Julius Ubido and Ikechukwu Ibenegbu add experience to the squad of the Cup kings.

As for Rangers, they have often cut and chop their playing personnel almost every season as they are now a selling club. But they have been able to pull off a few transfer coup this term to bring in former Heartland man, Chibuzor Okonkwo and Senegalese duo of Pierre Coly and Ousmane Pape Sane from Sharks as well as Sanusi Sani from Gombe United.

But if we take in consideration the last 10 games in the NPFL, Heartland seem to have made much progress with their recruits as their form tops that of Rangers. Heartland have picked 16 points in the last 10 rounds of matches, two more than Rangers.

However, only Warri Wolves have scored as much as 17 goals in those games as Rangers while Heartland have netted an average of one goal per game in the last 10 rounds of matches. But they have the meanest defence in those games conceding six times. Only Kwara United and Enyimba share same stats.

Men on both sides of the Orient

Both clubs have had players on both sides of the divide in recent times. Some of those recent stars include Igho Otegheri, Emeka 'Ayaya' Nwanna, Emeka Onuoha, Ebele Obi, Brendan Ogbu, Uche Oguchi, Efugh and Okonkwo. In fact the quartet of Efugh, Obi, Oguchi and Okonkwo are squad members of both clubs.

In recent years Heartland have often lured away Rangers' top stars but many faithful of the Coal City club will remember with smiles Anthony Nwaigwe switching from Heartland, then known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale, to Enugu Rangers in 1995.

Chukwudi Nworgu, Damien Udeh, Kingsley Onye, Mba Agbai and Louis Igwilo are among few who have also played for both clubs.

What to expect this time

This time, the coaches of both clubs, Okey Emordi and Ndubuisi Nduka of Rangers and Heartland respectively, will put out their strongest squads.

This Sunday, the game will be full of pace, dribbles and individual battles and it will be live on your World of Champions Africa-dedicated channel, SuperSport 9 from 4pm local time (5pm CAT).

Glo Premier League side, Enugu Rangers has insisted that it remains the favorites to emerge the winners at the end of this ongoing league season.

Rangers finished behind the eventual winners of the 2011/12 league season, Kano Pillars, and being the only Nigeria club still remaining at the continental championship, the Enugu-based club has reiterated its commitment to winning the league trophy at the end of the season.

The team manager of the club, Mr. Innocent Abana in a telephone interview with Pilot Sports said that despite the fact that they are presently in fourth position on the league table with 30 points; behind Pillars with 36 points, Warri Wolves in second position with 33 points and Kwara United in the third position with 32 points, they can overtake the other teams before the end of the season to emerge the league winners.

He further stated that they got the team that can deliver the trophy to them and make real impact at the continent, adding that their failure to progress at the money spinning CAF championship will motivate them to do well at the confederation cup competition.

However, the league is currently on mid season break; but Abana has opined that they would parade players that will deliver the trophy to the club as second stanza of the league kicks off.

He warned their opponents to expect real Rangers who almost won the league last season if not for the deduction of points which affected most clubs’ positions in the table as well as theirs.

He noted that there is no cause for alarm, even as he said that everything is working well for them, adding that the players are good to go when the second stanza commence.

We're now 6 points against league leaders Kano pillars but we have one outstanding game.

Our next game is away to Enyimba in Aba. I hope we get something from that match.

The season has come to and end and despite not winning the title, we maintained our consistent record of always finishing in the top 5 at least. I hope next season will be better for us. I want to use this opportunity to congratulate Kano Pillars for winning the title back to back.

.

Unlike in the past, they have managed to pull some points in some of their away matches with some surprising home matches result at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium.

They would've reap flogged their rivals with lots of points if they haven't conceded points at home. They drew with shooting stars fc, lobi stars etc at home. These are matches they easily should've won.

I hope they continue with their brilliant away form but their home results need to improve if they are to make impact. It's long overdue.

Rangers fc management need to start thinking backwards and embrace the future. Their logo need to be rebranded. They have the head of a big cat, the man on a horse, the antelope with a big R. The logo emblem should be easily recognisable.

I've tried getting their jersey without success, even their Twitter account doesn't work like it used to. It's difficult get any info about them.
