Nigeria To Stop Importation Of Rice In 2016 - Jonathan by Nobody: 2:16pm On Mar 20, 2013

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has said with the ongoing revolution in the agriculture sector, Nigeria will stop importation of rice in 2016.

The president, who spoke at the Nigeria Summit 2013, organised by the Economist in Lagos, on Tuesday, stated among other things that the Federal Government was committed to creating an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive, stating that lots of activities were being achieved in rice, cassava and sugar production.

“Our aim is to go back to agriculture not only to export raw materials but to process and add value. We are committed to creating job,” he said.

He noted that the government was aggressively addressing the problem of infrastructure in the country, stating that there were improvements in various sectors of the economy.

Specifically, the president said power supply had improved tremendously, assuring that at the end of the privatisation process in the power sector, Nigerians would experience stable power supply.

President Jonathan, at the summit, bared his mind on how his government was addressing the challenges of security and corruption in the country, insisting that the government would not dialogue with faceless organisation.

Also speaking, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), they had created a stable macro-economic stability.

The minister noted that they were working towards maintaining single digit inflation, exchange rate band and interest rate where the private sector could access credit.

Okonjo-Iweala, who is also the Minister of Finance, said her ministry was working on bringing down cost of governance and fiscal discipline, adding that she was also working towards bringing down domestic debt flow.
