Abrantie: True dat!

Come to Ghana and see 3 yr old kids dance azonto as if they learned it while in their mama's wombs.

It's one of those dances that looks good on both male and females. The cool part is, when watching someone dance azonto, you'd be watching it trying to figure out what the person is saying. It's a communicative dance.

@ bolded,

It's in the DNA grin In Ghana when it comes to stages in early childhood development, a child should also know how to dance Azonto and do it well. Any child who is not able to do the dance at an early age is developmentally delayed! grin grin grin

Re: Ghanaians Mad At Chris Brown For Calling Azonto A Nigerian Dance by londoner: 6:42am On Apr 05, 2013
Azonto was popular way before Wizkid's song. However, Nigerian artists have helped to take the exposure to a higher level in their own small way.

The exposure was not due to Nigerian artists in totality, either. But, Naija artists have helped to sustain and expose it in Nigeria and elsewhere.

D'banj in Oliver Twist, it was taught to Keri Hilson when she came to Naija, JJC in African Skank etc

If Chris mistakenly thought it was Nigerian, its because he did not understand or listen to the track he was dancing to. It states in the song, that he is talking about and to a Ghana girl, he even mentions Ghanaian food (banku) in the song.

Wiz tought him the dance, that is where the mistake came in. Everyone and their mama knows Azonto is and will forever be a Ghanaian dance.

Although the best azonto dancers I have seen are not all Ghanaian.

The funniest thing about the youtube Ghanaian complaining about Alingo, is that in his video title, he could not even spell his own country's name properly.....he must have been really angry....lol

Anyone who is angry about CB's mistake, should direct their animousity to him and not Nigerians generally. We all know Wiz kid did not tell him it is a Nigerian dance......it was CB's assumption. Nigerians here should give credit where due, even though Ghanaian posters here are irrational and throw insults at our dear country at every turn.

lets have pity on them, the truth is......... they cant help it.

Abeg dis Azonto whatever shoul end already!!! .... We all know dat Azonto is a Ghanaian dance, so Ghanaians should be mad at Chris Brown for d mistake but not at Nigerians. But lemme ask oo, why all these fuss about Azonto? Its a common dance for crying out loud, which has almost faded... Ghanaians big ups to u people for inventing Azonto but its no big deal. There has been other dances before which has also faded like Yahooze, Galala etc & Azonto is also joining their bandwagon. But one thing i must say here is dat, u can never compare the Nigerian Entertainment industry with dat of the Ghanaians. There's a BIG difference just like Night & Day. Everybody in Africa & Diaspora knows dat. One thing Ghanaians must know is dat Nigerian artistes doesnt need Ghana to sustain our industry cos we have a very HUGE local market for our music. 170 million people no be beans. But on the other hand, Ghana so much need Nigeria cos they have a very small market for their music, 25 million is very small compared to 170 million. So there's no need for Ghanaians to compete with Nigerians cos we are way ahead of u guys in Entertainment ( music & movies ). Its like d U.K trying to compete with d U.S, it doesnt make sense. Ghana should just go & compete with Kenya or Uganda. And d funny thing is dat Nigerians dont really care about u guys cos u dont bother with someone u know u are better than. I'm not trying to bash u people or something cos i like Sarkodie & R2Bees, they are good musicians. But u guys need to chill, Azonto is just a dance, it doesnt have copyright.

Go and do an analysis of Nigerian and Ghanaian music. Most Nigerian musicians are now playing the 'Hiplife' style of music that originated from Ghana. It is the fast, uptempo Highlife mixed with rap, and it was originated by Reggie Rockstone in the early 90s and modernised by younger musicians by Sarkodie, Praye, Obour etc

What most young Nigerian musicians have been playing in the last 3-years are imitation of the Ghana Hiplife music...from Iyanya, Olamide, May-D, Davido, Wizkid, Ruggedman, Terry G, Timaya, J.Martins, Duncan Mighty, Omawumi, etc and virtually all the young new Nigerian artistes.
If you would be sincere, you would realise that the trend of music/beats/rhythms we hear now is different from what we used to hear in about 5-10 years back. Take Iyanya for instance. Compare the style of music he released after the winning the Project Fame about 5-6 years ago, and the kind of music he plays now.....He is now playing the 'HipLife' style of Ghana.....because of the up tempo danceable effects which is more appealing in parties and dancehalls
We are copying Ghana's highly danceable Hiplife music beats...that is the truth.
Can you cast your mind back to about 5-10 years ago and remember how dull our local music used to be at party dance halls? But now, with the adoption of the Ghana Hiplife style, which fuses fast highlife/rap, virtually all Nigerian musicians and dance halls are now rocking with 'Azonto' beats..... Any Nigerian musician that wants to remain relevant in dance halls now play Azonto/Hiplife beats...Even PSquare had to steal the concept but shamelessly put a another name 'Alingo' on it.

Go listen to many Nigerian musicians who are playing Sarkodie's style....e.g. Olamide's Bend Down Low, Ruggedman, and even PSquare's new song for Glo(Unlimited)....they are all imitations of Ghana's Sarkodie and Guru's style of music

If you do not know, Ghana taught Nigeria our first classical music....Highlife. Even Fela had to go learn and master professional music in Ghana before he became a success in music!

Anvaller:

OK Mike but nothing is more dubious than a blatant impersonation... We are smart enough to read thru ur implications as being an impersonator...
If Azonto was already popular, how popular? U can not deny the fact that Nigerian entertainment has a global fan base so if Nigeria adopts Azonto all Naija fans world wide will buy into it and would assume automatically that it's Nigerian because they are a fan of Nigerian entertainment and not of Ghana. U need to chill... Blues, Rap, Acapella, Jazz etc.. are all African but these genres are made popular by African Americans and so the new generation believes these genres are American.. so it is normal. If PSquare made Alingo.. well if u look at the dance step it is not Azonto but anyone would know that it is Azonto inspired but since the dance step is not exactly Azonto and they called it Alingo why should u be mad about that? PSquare knew that if they did exactly azonto they would still make their hit and Ghanaian would still be mad about it just as if PSquare have not been making hits before Azonto and thats why they repackaged it and gave it a different brand. Even if u took such case to court, u can never win cos its not Azonto.. Believing that Nigeria did not make azonto popular is just plain self deceit. U can't blame Chris Brown all he knows about is Nigerian entertainment it is left to u Ghanaian to to make ur entertainment as popular if u can, otherwise U can't but just give it to the trail blazer.

And let me ask u, Has any Nigerian musician actually come out in an interview to categorically state that Azonto is Nigerian? U can not blame it on Nigeria if Naija fans erroneously assume that the dance is Nigerian because Naija sold it to them. U can only blame Nigeria on this kind of thing if u can refer to an interview where a known Nigerian entertainer was asked about the origin of Azonto and replied as that it is Nigerian.. Otherwise this kind of argument will just make u look stupid.

If Azonto was not already popular globally, then tell me: how did Nigeria/Nigerians get to know about it? How did Wizkid get to know and sing about it even when most Nigerians did not know about it?
The truth is Azonto had been very popular among Africans in Europe and other countries. Many African musicians in Europe(including Nigerians) have been featuring Azonto in their music clips, before Nigeria joined.

African Azonto mass parties have been held in UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, US etc as early as late 2010 (after Ghana;s WC performances) and in 2011...long before Nigeria joined in 2012. The white guy that featured in D-Banj's 'Oliver Twist' video was discovered from the Azonto dance clips (in UK) on youtube long before D-Banj released his video

Go to Google and search for Azonto and you will see the trend

If we dont know about something, it does not mean that the thing does not exist....we need to seek and discover before we make arrogant comments. We must realise that the world does not start nor end with Nigeria. Things are happening in other places. If there is no electricity in Nigeria, it does not mean other places also dont have electricity!

My comments were not targeted at the nation 'Nigeria' as a whole. But we have to watch the way we try to undermine other people just because we are desperate to be reckoned with by all means....by hook or crook!

Give respect and get respect!

P-Square are very very successful. They are well known, and their music sells. They have achieved this by being original and creative in the past. GOOD. So why playing cheap and desperate to steal Azonto and then call it Alingo? That is what I cannot understand. Are they so desperate that they have to hijack the dance and call it another name?

I would understand if a not-too-successful musician had done that, but not a group like PSquare.
And we Nigerians should be honourable enough to admit when someone does a wrong thing.....we cannot just continue to celebrate mediocrity and dubious tendencies.

It is not about court of law...it is about being modest and sincere to acknowledge and appreciating genuine creativity.
Why do musicians like PSquare complain about copyright/piracy if they are stealing someone else's work and then put their name on it? It is a shame
I give credit to Wizkid and other musicians who proudly featured Azonto dance in their video clips without attempting to steal it by calling it another name.

Nigeria had Yahoozee, Galala, Swor,Alanta Etigi etc.....nobody has stolen them with another name! We should be honourable enough not to steal Azonto with Alingo(rubbish). Just enjoy the dance and move on. Dont use another name to steal it! It is disgraceful

Who knows Ghana's music sef? For ur info, Nigerians started knowing ur music from last year cos of Sarkodie's U go kill me. So u say dat in d last 5yrs,dat d Nigerian music was dull cos we dont have good hi-tempo songs? I laugh in Spanish.. So what happened to Terry G's & Timaya's songs back in d day? They are azonto-songs too? I pity some Ghanaians sha, who wants to compete with Naija cos u guys will die of High BP. So P Square & Lagbaja's Glo Unlimited song is now an imitation of Ghana's hiplife/azonto beats? I pity u people cos Nigerians doesnt know u guys exist. Naija is too BIG for Ghana, go compete with Kenya in Entertainment. I just pray u people dont spoil Sarkodie's & R2Bee's market for Nigeria wit ur jealousy. As for Samini, he has killed his career by dissing P Square,he ll neva blow in Naija. His music will never pass Accra. R2Bees dat said in an interview dat they will continue to do Nigerian-kinda music cos it's wat sells in Ghana & Africa, and u are here telling me abt hiplife. Anyways sha, i discovered a good Ghanaian rap artiste called EL, i will post his music here. U guys should just chill for Nigerians. Peace.

Someone said the most reasonable thing in this thread. The Asians and the ever superior White Men are busy inventing and discovery things for the survival of mankind and Africans are pitifully arguing over who has a very useless dance. Pity and awkwardness for the blacks in Africa, esp. jobless Nigerians. See how the human race would have extincted a long time ago if not for the White Race. Am not a racist, pls. Am a Nigerian. But many things pain me much about the poverty of Blacks in all ramifications. Daily, the united nations are daily taking the little nuclear weapons the Africans could manage to get their hanads on. I repeat here again that, one time is coming that Africans will be eliminated cos they are a big head people, i mean great dunces and retarded imbeciles. I'll like to reinstate what the Soviet Union revered leader, Josef Stalin, in the WW11 declared publicly: AMERICAN IS THE HOPE OF MANKIND. True. As monsterous as the old hag was, he said one of the greatest truth in human history. American and the Whites in general have everything superior. We're always their slaves, accept or ignore this fact, it's still d great fact. They rule and are superior in everything. Hell! They are there breaking records and saving this planet which is dying and the Inferiors are here as usual throwing up tantrums over an azonto. Kai! Pity! So if it was the azonto that people like Usher Raymond and President Obama danced at the inaugural balls, maybe a great war will erupt winthin the shore of the continent over who originated it? Kai! History has greatly shown that Africans are wretched, crude and imbeciles of a people who don't deserve to live again. Take caution.
