Justice Talba, Who Freed Pension Thief, Suspended For One Year

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, has approved the suspension of Justice Abubakar Talba of the FCT High Court, Gudu, Abuja.

The 12 months suspension follows the controversial judgement delivered by the judge in respect of John Yusufu who was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an alleged N32.8 billion Police Pension Fraud.

Also Justice Okechukwu who recently adjourned Ikuforiji's case indefinitely was given a stern warning

The man is supposed to be given a lifetime away from civil service.

Given just a year to go and enjoy the money collected from the thief.

Mcheeew. He was only suspended for such a grave act of injustice to nigerians. What then is the difference between him and the punishers afterall they both gave little punishments for grave acts. This should have been an opportunity to send a strong message to other corrupt judges. Opportunity lost. Not too different from the pardon granted Alameisegha by Jonathan. They are called criminals only for a short while, the they are restored(even before he has exhausted the bribe money that secured the linient sentence for the pension thiefs).

Yeah it is but it is also a black mark on his documents, 1 year away from civil service in Nigeria is like a life time, he will feel d pain eventually cos in Nigeria once u leave power for a while, ur subordinates will find a way to finally finish u. Jt ask every other civil servant most of them can't even get pension money to buy fuel for generator but few year back dey ruled.

I also think one year is too small BUT it is a good improvement from the rampant impunity and miscarriage of justice that we had before now.
Since Jonathan approved the new woman as CJN there continues to be marked progress in the INDEPENDENCE of that arm of federal government.
Unfortunately we may not be able to say the same for the state judiciaries even where the "progressive opposition" has been in charge for 14 years.

Is not about suspending the judge, is high time we change most of those radiculous sanctions in our legal system. There should be capital punishments for corruptions, there should be 20 years, 50 years for serious offences and not those useless ones we have now.

Techncally, the judge didnt commit an offence, so you cannot met out a criminal punishment to him. This is more on ethics. Except evidence emerges that he actually collected bribe, this is the best they can do. So I think it is still a great step.

It smacks of ignorance to blame the judge. The maximum
sentence that can be imposed is two years, with or without option
of fines. The accused pleaded guilt and being a first time offender,
it's left for the judge to either use his discretion to temper justice
with mercy or apply the maximum sentence. The judge has done
nothing wrong in this regard.
this excerpt is from Prof corruption's response when this same judge passed his judgement on the pension boss but when asked by another nairalander under which section of the constitution the sentencing of a man to four years in prison few days later for stealing a fowl was based on, no further comments from him. Same judge is today suspended

Will he ever be considered to be impartial in any case he is handed again? The wise thing for him to do would have been to voluntarily resign or for the NJC to just retire him.
