Chapter 14

Chidi thought of Nkiru and her sister as the nurse tried to put some bandages on his shoulder and head. He was glad that everything had turned out good but hoped that the stress they had gone through would not affect both girls psychologically.

Bassey walked up to him with Dr. Samuel by his side.

Chidi and his friend had been taken straight to City Hospital from Priest house. Adanna and Nkiru were given special attention because of the bruises all over their bodies. Adanna had gotten hers from the Priest’s hits and the cuts from the sharp sticks in the bush. She also needed rest and she complained of head ache. Samuel had suggested they run a head scan for her to ascertain that she wasn’t having internal bleeding.

“I am glad you are alright man, I can’t imagine the horror you guys must have gone through.” Bassey said to Chidi.

“I am more concerned about Nkiru… she most have gone through hell when those men tried to molest her. I hope her heart is strong enough to avoid those dead bodies from coming up in her dreams this night.” Chidi said as he wore his shirt.

“She is surprisingly strong,” Samuel said. He had just left Daniel and the two sisters in the room to see how Chidi was doing. A brief psych evaluation had shown that she was okay for now.

“Where are they? I really need to see them right away.” Chidi said.

“Alright, I will lead the way”, Samuel quipped.

They got to the room and Chidi was glad to see a sweet smile light up Nkiru’s face as she saw him enter. She was sitting on her hospital bed.

He walked to her bed and sat beside her and then he picked up her right hand that was close to him and held unto it. “I hope you are okay?”

“I am very okay… and you?” she softly asked.

“You know I am strong,” he said and looked towards Adanna’s bed was at the other end of the room. She was lying on it with Daniel by his side.

Samuel and Bassey were standing by their side and staring from one bed to the other.

“I am still amazed… so this Priest of a guy killed so much people, caused you guys so much pain and stressed himself beyond limit just to molest Adanna?” Bassey said unbelievably.

“He is what the psychologists call ‘a chronic psychotic stalker’. His insecurities didn’t allow him to approach the girl next door whom he was in love with. Perhaps this was because of the internal conflict between his personality and his religious orientation. So he repressed all his feelings and by the time these repressed feeling decide to seek expression, he was already damaged and the repressed feelings came out negatively. He therefore became a ra.pist and murderer while he tried to justify his action by choosing a religious stance that best suited him.” The doctor explained. They had learnt more about ‘The Religion’ from Emeka and Biggy. Both were receiving treatment in a different ward and would be charged once they got better. The rest had lost their lives.

They all listened as the doctor tried to explain Priest’s personality to them. They couldn’t understand how he could get followers with such unbelievable religious theory.

They were given much attention by the doctors and by ten pm, they were discharged while the result of Adanna’s head scan will be revealed the next day.

Chidi opted that they stay over in his house.

On his way home, he bought lots of drinks and food for the six of them. They had police escorts all the way home.
Later that night, Bassey ensured the policemen watching over them remained alert even though they no reason to feel threatened for now and left for his home. Samuel left with him too.

Adanna retired into her room with the excuse that she felt tired and Daniel went in with her.

“Did I tell you how beautiful you look even with all the stress?”

She just smiled.

“Are you really okay? How do you feel after stabbing him?” He asked.

“I have never better,” she said. “Hurting Priest was the best thing that had happened to me in the past three days. He deserved more knife wounds from me.”

“You are one hell of a tough lady you know,” he said.

She smiled. “I am thinking of how you are going to get your life back after all these years of isolating yourself from the world.”

“I already have some plans. I will revive my consulting business, Samuel had promised to give me some money, and with you by my side, I believe the sky will be my limit.”

“I will always be there for you, I promise.”

With that, he bent over and kissed her.

Chidi was looking at Nkiru into her eyes as they stood facing each other in the sitting room. It was like a dream to him.
“You have a beautiful home,” she said.

“You have a beautiful face,” he replied with a happy smile on his face.

“With all these bruises and swells? I hope you are not making fun of me.”

“You will always look nice to me… I never knew you could come out strong after all you have gone through. I am sorry for allowing them take you away, sorry for not protecting you,”

“Thank you for everything Chidi… and thank you for loving me.” She said, ignoring his apologies.

That was just a cue for him to bend over and kiss her even as his hands reached for her back to caress them.
