The United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr. Daouda Toure, on Friday said that in spite of some hitches witnessed by Nigerian journalists, it was still one of the freest in the world.

Toure said this in Abuja at an event organised by UNESCO to mark this year's World Press Freedom Day, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

According to him, the press in Nigeria is regarded as one of the freest in the world in spite of some pockets of incidents of impunity and attacks.

"Unfortunately and sadly, three journalists and media workers died in the line of duty in Nigeria in 2012," he said.

He said the United Nations family, through UNESCO, had dedicated a webpage in the memory of "these gallant colleagues who died while performing their constitutional responsibility."

Toure said the UN system in Nigeria had consistently promoted freedom of expression and public access to information through institutional capacity building and curriculum development for journalism training.

He said the UN, through the Democratic Governance for Development project, its international partners mainly the European Union, the UK Department for International Development and the Canadian International Development agency, was working to strengthen the voice and capacity of the Nigerian media.

According to Toure, this is with the objective of promoting media pluralism and democratisation of citizens' access to information.

He said that DGD project was also supporting the effective implementation of the Freedom of Information Act with government institutions and civil society to promote inclusiveness in the democratic process and accountability of elected officials.

The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Press Council, Mr. Bayo Atoyebi, called on Nigerian journalists to show more responsibility in their reportage, adding that no story was worth dying for.

He said the media should shun unbridled sensationalism, adding that they should practise with ethical standard.

Atoyebi called on journalists to hold government accountable to the people, adding that professionalism should not be jettisoned on the alter of money.

This is a comment by a UN official and not the outcome of an official ranking done by the UN or any credible body. He was probably playing to the gallery as a lot of people do when they visit a country.

Double Standard.
If Doyin Okupe speaks, you will say the Presidency spoke. Some of you will even say GEJ said so and so.

For goodness sake this is the Resident Coordinator of UN that is speaking and giving commendation. He has the right speak on their behalf. Infact he is the one that actually feeds the UN headquaters with information about Nigeria.

I think we should applaud the commendation, since it speaks positive about the country. Come to think of it, if it was a negative statement it will still be carried as UN said so and so.

This is a clear case of inferiority complex which many Nigerians have sold themselves to. If this report had said Nigerian press are the most gagged in the world, would you still have questioned the credibility of this U.N official? Shame on all of you that celebrate everything negative about your land. May u be delivered by whatever you believe in.

Does this also apply when negative comments are made about the country? Or it's only for positive comments?

Yea indeed there's freedom of press in Nigeria.
Freedom to spread rumours and call the president all sort of names.
Imagine if we had Idi Amin as our president, Sango Ota would have been barricaded in search of Seun.

a sh it press like sahara puporters can only exist in Jonathans free press regime.
it seems you are the only one with working brain cells around here. Everybody knows that saharaReporters have never reported something good about nigeria, only the negative parts get aired and the worst of it, its aired to international audience, yet the still go scout free, aljazeera, cnn, presstv, bbc, xinhua etc nigerian correspondents that reports "raw" propaganda are allowed to dance free! I wander where all those goats called saharaReporters would have been if it was Abacha's regime. I wonder whether a citizen can go to the Commander in chief facebook page and spew nonsence like most nigerians do in countries like somalia,UAE,Egypt, china, iraq, iran, etc!
When the press even go as far as reporting about the first lady's every movement and go un-jailed. TRY THIS IS US AND YOU WILL SECRETLY END UP IN QUANTANAMO FOR TREASON,ESPIONAGE AND BREACH OF TRUST
