Bama Massacre Negates Amnesty Talks – Jonathan by Maxymilliano(m): 11:01am On May 09, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned Tuesday’s attack by armed terrorists on Bama, Borno State, which claimed scores of lives despite ongoing efforts towards dialogue and the peaceful resolution of security challenges in Northern Nigeria.

An Aso Rock statement issued from South Africa where the President is attending the World Economic Forum, said the President, however, warned that the option of dialogue should not be seen as a weakening of government’s “resolve and determination to use all the forces at its disposal to crush all brazen affronts to the powers and sovereignty of the Nigerian nation.”

The President condoled with the families and colleagues of the soldiers, policemen and prison officials who lost their lives in the attack, and urged the armed forces and police not to be daunted by the loss of their colleagues. Jonathan also commiserated with the families of the innocent civilians who were either killed or injured in the attack. The statement, signed by Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, reads: “President Goodluck Jonathan deplores yesterday’s attack by armed terrorists on Bama, Borno State, which claimed scores of lives. “President Jonathan believes that the continuation of such callous and wanton attacks of innocent Nigerians, government facilities and security formations flies in the face of ongoing efforts to establish a workable framework for dialogue and the peaceful resolution of security challenges in Northern Nigeria.

The President warns that the Federal Government’s consideration of dialogue as an option for the elimination of some current threats to security should not be seen as a weakening of its resolve and determination to use all the forces at its disposal to crush all brazen affronts to the powers and sovereignty of the Nigerian nation. “President Jonathan extends sincere condolences to the families and colleagues of the soldiers, policemen and prison officials who lost their lives in the dastardly attack. “The President urges the armed forces and police not to be disheartened or daunted by the loss of their colleagues, but to remain focused and undeterred in discharging their responsibility for the security of lives and property in all parts of Nigeria with the assurance that the Federal Government will continue to give the Armed Forces and Police the fullest possible support to enhance their ability to meet the continuing challenges of terrorism and insurgency.

“President Jonathan also commiserates with the families of the innocent civilians who were either killed or injured in Tuesday’s attack on Boma.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army disclosed on Wednesday that it has devised balloons which would be used in information and intelligence gathering to tackle the various acts of terrorism in the country.

Director of Army Transformation and Innovation Center (ATIC), Army Headquarters, Abuja, Nwokoro Ijioma, disclosed this at a lecture on ‘Transforming the Army into a Force Better Able to Meet Contemporary Challenges’ at the 2 nd Div, Odogbo Cantonment, Ibadan.

Ijioma, who was the guest speaker at the occasion, told the participating officers that the balloons would be deployed in the hotbeds of terror attacks in the country.

He added that the growing wave of terrorism had necessitated the mounting of roadblocks in some parts of the country, stressing that “the ATIC is aimed at repositioning the Nigerian Army to effectively meet contemporary challenges in a dynamic security environment.

“The ATIC has been tasked to optimise in practical terms the implementation strategy of the COAS vision by providing the guidelinesfor promotion of improvements through reduced operational risks, increased efficiency and improved operational effectiveness.”

To imagine they are being begged to accept billions of money is painful. Be it a politicians, thugs, kidnappers, bokos, militants - all I want is justice for Nigerians.

BTW, what has become of all the arrests we have been hearing about?

RiKKies001: You will be surprised they'll call for amnesty.

Initially, they did not call for amnesty, if Im correct.
Your president, instead of exterminating these jihad terrorists, decided to initiate an amnesty committee that would financially provide for the weapons these pests use to kill innocent civilians.

Let alone governing this jungle called Nigeria.

Fear let Jonathan? Any excessive activity committed by the troops now are a responsibility of the Nigerian Army but any death when a state of emergency is declared is on Jonathan. But the man want to be president for as long as possible. Why risk mass northern discontent (even if several hundred thousands have to die)?

The harsh reality of things is- Insurgencies are never easily quelled ANYWHERE in the world.

ETA has been a scourge to Spain since 1968, and Chechen separatists have been wreaking Havoc in Russia's Caucasus region since the early nineties.

I could give you more examples, but both are good examples of 1st world powers who possess a better equipped war machine than Nigeria can ever hope to have...and even they have not been able to get it right!

The amnesty proposal panders to man's biggest flaw - Greed.

The Government will hoping the prospect of millions of Naira sets off internal warfare and factionalizes the insurgents, making it easier for the military to mop up the stragglers...or at the very least, restrict the sphere of influence of the leaders of the insurgency.

I really hate GEJ and his policies(My fantasy football team is called the AntiGEJCrew), BUT I think the Goverment is towing the right path with this amnesty business.

The whole amnesty issue is being pushed by greedy northern politicians who have their beady eyes on the oil revenue that will be shared. The boko haram sect has rejected amnesty, the federal government should continue with the stick approach, the Jtf needs to be strengthened and reinforced to smoke out the terrorists from their caves. Justice must prevail, say NO to amnesty for terrorists!

If u investigate u will realise that most terrorist activities carried out by BH is done in states closer to the borders of those countries.

I hope the whole world nigerians are watching and reading what this so called BH are doing with the lives of innocent people in this country! Tommorow some fools will come here and start blaming GEJ, anyway i have this to say; the 50million ransome they got for the kidnapping of the elder states man Mr Ali, is what they are using to acquire arms for this operations. My condolence goes to those who lost their lives, but come 2015 GEJ is returning unoppose.
