Hello every one
How come everytime i try to go to www.nigeriastockmarket.com it does not go through. What is going on. Is that website blocked from people who are outside nigeria? I am only trying to familiarise myself with stock exchange and how it all works and the share price before i decide on which company shares to buy. Please assist me if am doing something wrong or if there is any other website i need to check.Thank you all.

Seun,im really disappointed by your response to this topic.I can never know where u got that idea from.its totally misleading and utterly fallacious.Forum like this give people the opportunity to get valuable information, brainstorm and share experiences. And that is why i like nairaland.i checked d name so many times b4 i was convinced it was u.Ive read so many sagacious and incisive contributions from u.U got this wrong!I live in london and i monitor nigeria stocks on d internet everyday.Ive made a lot of investment in the stock market and ive made a fortune.Ive also got so many friends who have made even more.
The fundamental issue is to be involved by yourself.Get as much information as u can and make yourself conversant with the market. Its a goldmine.
Seun never even explained why he came to that conclusion.I respect everybodys opinion but we need to explain why, so that the choice of what to do will be left to people who requested information.

I dont know how to say thank you. You are a legend. I just check out some of teh sites. Thanks a lot.
One more thing. I sent some money to nigeria to buy first bank shares and i was told just yesterday by the broker that the first bank shares are very scarce at the moment. I said to them to return my money but they said if they return the money and the shares becomes available at the share market, they might not have the money to buy it then. Is that general procedure or i just got into the hands of 419 again? This is a reputable share brokers in lagos. Please advice on weather to get my money back or leave it with them. Plus are the first bank shares really scarce to buy at the moment?
Thanks once again.

yomyom,
Thats very true abt ist bank.Im also having d same problem at d moment. The problem is,ist bank share price was adjusted recently due to the bonus issued to shareholders. That is why d price came down, but even with dat people are not ready to flog it at the current price(cheap) and that explains why its scarce 4 now.If u trust d broker u can leave d money with him so that he can buy 4 u when its available.otherwise,u can collect d money and give it someone u trust in nigeria who will make it available to d stockbroker anytime d stock is in d market.

What broker are some of you, who live outside of the Nigeria using. I have been looking for a broker to use. I am in USa, and I finally found one, from the list I found on this site called "CashCraft". I have been emailing them, and someone finally called me. I sent him a package from here, and now he doesn't respond to my emails. I also, have share certificates that I wanted him to sell, and he asked me to send him copies and I did, but he no longer responds to my emails. I did not send him the originals, so I don't think I have been "419". Can anyone recommend a reputable broker, who can deal with someone in the USA, and has email, web, etc.

Thanks once again. I have instructed them last night to buy the Union bank if First bank is unavailabe. I am just a bit worried having to keep the money with the broker especially when he knows that am out of the country. I told him when ever the first bank is available, he could then mail me and let me know. Having to give the money to relative is as bad as leaving the money with the broker. You never know in nigeria, They might tell you that one of your uncle was sick and they had to use the money to take him to hospital, what can you say once they told you that. So i guess i am not mistaken by buying union bank for now and first bank later which is the main one i am interested in.
Thanks once again. You make me settled down now especially with the fact that you also have being in need of first bank shares.
Please keep in touch.

Re: Stock Brokers In Nigeria? by oshkosh(m): 9:31pm On Aug 24, 2006
I thought I'd contribute briefly to this thread ,

First bank is now readily available so I don't know what your stockbroker is on about, The stock market have been bearish (decline) this week with many investors selling to take their profit. First bank shares dropped from N45 to N39 as at COB today. I like Union Bank shares .(I also bought some), but I'll invest in the following stock as I believe they are currently underpriced:-

Access bank
Oceanic bank

First bank will always be a good buy. This is a good time to buy as most stock are now less expensive compared to a few weeks back. I live abroad but trade via my stock broker in Nigeria. BGL, IBTC, SecTrust and CIL are very good and dependable.
Re: Stock Brokers In Nigeria? by yomyom52(m): 12:52am On Aug 25, 2006
Thank you very much. I will contacting my broker in the morning and ask him to buy for me the IBTC as well as Union but as at two days ago, he was unable to buy first bank as he said was not available. Thanks very much all of you for the enlightenment.

For those who are interested i invest with IBTC, Nigerian Equity Fund, those who are in the states can buy into the funds directly from over here, just go to the site www.ibtc.com and get more info, It is a kind of mutual fund with a basket of Nigerian stocks, and it has outperformed the Nigerian Stock Exchange for the past 10yrs, As for Seun i feel really bad for u and, i guess that for u Ignorance is bliss, Nigeria as an emerging market will definately expand in the next 10yrs, let the wise invest wisely,

Re: Stock Brokers In Nigeria? by ebony9ja(m): 12:45pm On Sep 02, 2006
Neb,
With an outlook of 4-5 years and 100k of investible funds, i will recommend the following stocks:.

GTB- stable, efficeint and consistent returns.Gtb also enjoys tremendous goodwill from investors plus, guaranteed payment of dividend twice a year!

oceanic: i still believe it is currently undervalued(I bought @ N7) at the current price, and at the current growth rate, it is a N15- N20 stock.

Ist bank is good too. provided you are not too much in a hurry to make returns. If you had invested earlier , it could have been better. I did and made a lot of money. 100% to be precise. however, looking at the proposed merger with Eco bank, The stock will be placed on technical suspension, shares reconstructions will follow later, New certificate of the combine entity wont come out in time and that means you can't trade on it. This is from a speculator's point of view. since you are a patient investor(2-4yrs), then you can buy first bank. You will smile after a year or two but not before then due to merger -induced distractions.

UBA is also good. Full year result will be fantastic. You can inest now. The stock will be trading at N25 before the year ends- UBA will be declaring 18months result instead of 12 and the outstandings shares are ok relative to her peers. so for 100k, UBA is also good.

You can divide your fund into 2 and invest 50k each, that minimise your risk but i tell you , it is a very good risk to take. invest in any of this shares and you will be happy. all the best.
Re: Stock Brokers In Nigeria? by ebony9ja(m): 1:04pm On Sep 02, 2006
Neb,

GTB- GTb will likely pay a combine dividend of N1 this year. interim Dividend of 25k- 30k (due NOV,2006) and final dividend of 65k- 85k (due May 2007).
If business is good, thats the lowest you will get a year. at current price of N18, your 100k will fetch you approx 5400 shares. thats around 5k in dividend a year. but thats not all, if you keep your shares, you may also enjoy capital appreciations. i can't tell you how much because price movement is affected by many factors and dont forget bonus issues in a very very good year!-

UBA- it can pay between N1-N1.50 as dividend (once a year). Uba's opportunity for capital appreciation is tremendous. so do the calculation of how many UBA shares you will buy for 100k .

Oceanic- dividend of 50k- 70k this year. This year has been good for oceanic. Profit growth rate has been fantastic this year(90%). Oceanic will be the 3rd most profitable bank this year. just wait for the final results. You will get about 8000units of oceanic bank shares at the current price.

First Bank- refer to my last post!

hope i have answered your initial questions.

happy investing!

Ebony,
Thxs a lot for spending and taking time to explained their prices n values for me. pls, to be precise, should i trade wit 1st B. and GtB. on 50k : 50k each. Or what's ur view? pls, lets stay in touch. Regards.
Re: Stock Brokers In Nigeria? by ebony9ja(m): 2:53pm On Sep 04, 2006
Neb,

i wish i could predict the stock that will net you the best returns but i can't. my advice is based purely on fundamentals.

so invest 50k a each on uba and oceanic bank. My reason for this is the two stocks are near their year end, and the potentials are great. but if you must do it, you have to invest Now to take advantage of price appreciation! I have substantial investments in the two stocks and am happy with the outcome so far. if you are not too much in a hurry, GTB is another great stock.

all the best, believe me, all the best.

Hi Parababe

The stock market is a good place to invest if you know how the rope works. @ Seun, Don't be pessimistic always.
Please my dear parababe, I'll advise you to get a good broker and always watch out for opportunities that abound. For example, if you had invested your 50,000 in First Bank shares sometime around may when it sold for N33 per share you'd have over N100,000 in August cos it sold for over N70 per share!

Re: Stock Brokers In Nigeria? by kazey(m): 4:18pm On Sep 07, 2006
I think when Seun says, people should not invest in the Nigerian stock market he has his reasons, what he failed to do was let us know why we shouldnt invest in stocks.

Ok, I would try to explain as to why some people tend to think investing in meagre stocks is not a good idea.

Firstly the stock market, is a very volatile market in the sense that, its construct is not governed by direct market success of the organisation being listed or how well the organisation is currently doing. Rather its value determinant are the speculations, possible conclusions, rumours, and demand that its buyers and sellers brought into live.

So literally when you invest in a company that is listed, your money does not really contribute directly to the companies operation budget, rather it allows the owners to use your money to do whatever they so wish to do. As they so wish to do at the end of the year, they can decide to give your rewards for your contribution otherwise known as dividends from their net profit, or decide not too.

So there are a few categories of people that actually really do make money from the stock market. Only Category A become rich through stocks.

Category A.
The company founders or the initial investors when the company offer its initial Public Offering. This category of people make money for the fact that when they got the initial lots the value was less and the volumes was more depending on how much the company distributed. So the money actually they made is through people like you investing heavily into the company. Your money makes them rich later on.

Category B.
Significant stock investors, those that actually buy upto 20% of the company valued stocks, this category of investors even though they are already rich, and you wont literally say they made it through that particular stock, considering the amount they invested in, make money through the net profit, because they have a say in the companies decleration, and they could always force dividend decleration or even sell a few amount of their stocks once in a while. But considering the amount they invest, anytime they choose to cash out, you the meagre investor would be heavily infected, because the value of that particular stock in the market would significantly DROP.

Category C.
The daily traders, that really do understand technical analysis, and gamble using different formulaes and patterns, this group of people do not really care about the company background, all they do is literally just gamble.

Category D.
The lucky traders, who invest, and the stock price luckily sky rockets over-night, and the amount normally gained is nothing really to write home about, because this lucky traders normally happen to be meagre investors, and the only way they could make money then, is buy selling off their stocks, This is because if they wait for dividends, Dissapointment would surely be their escort back from the bank.

Dont Invest in the stock market, if you think its going to make your rich, but if you want something to count on, maybe something to probably add a few kobo's to your wallet at the end of the year, then stocks is for you. This is because an average person does not have the tools, heart or the knowledge daily traders use in order to trade daily.

Seun I disagree with you with so much PASSION! I used to feel the same way about stocks/shares/investment too until I discovered how to really make money from it. It's the best because it's not about you working for money rather money starts to work hard for you!

There is more to shares than just a piece of well designeed certificate that you stare at!

I have my own experience, also I have just invested for a friend this week too!
Not only that I have a good and integrity conscious link, highly qualified expert that I use and there's been several records of N200, 000.00 pure profit in two weeks, N100,000.00 in 2months,  N300,000.00 in one week, and many more even in millions depending on the investment.

Also there is something called Asset Management, that takes care of any fear of losing money. How? Under such an arrangement, the worse that can happen to you is that you get your money back as it is, there is a 10001% guarantee that you will NOT lose your money and a huge possibilty that you will make money!

If anyone is interested in more information and direct link you can call 08033792673 or email net365net@yahoo.com (I'm not hiding my contact infor. cause I'm confident of what I am talking about)

Very true, experience they say is the best teacher, not only that evidence will always silence every argument! I 've seen it and it's possible, investment education is what you need. I don't even need to kill myself studying the market, my competent financial expert does a good job on my behalf.

The truth is if  this thread were to be on last year, my post would have been completely different, maybe my opinion would have been similar to Seun's but now I know better and I'm so glad.  If you want me to link you up so you can ask all the questtions you want to ask and make your own decision feel free to mail or call me.

this year around march i bought Zenith banks shares while i was at jos. The problem lies in the fact that i can't return back to Jos in the mean time cos i've relocated to Lagos how can i then get my dividends?, it was just today that a friend brought the share certificate. Is there any way of instructing Zenith bank to pay in directly into my account or change my postal address to Lagos
