Perhaps, due to their nature, women politicians have not exhibited expected courage and guts to declare their intention for 2015 in the State of Excellence. However, Daily Sun can report authoritatively that some of these political amazons are already making body language that put nobody in doubt that they have some jokers up their sleeves.

RAZAQ BAMIDELE examines some of these women who cannot be ignored.

Oluwatoyin Abike Dabiri-Erewa

This Ikorodu born erudite broadcaster cum politician has been in the House of Representatives for the third term running where she is proving her mettle to the admiration of his people. Born into the popular Erogbogbo family in the ancient town of Ikorodu, the brilliant and pretty journalist joined politics in the progressive camp, and is not found wanting either on the floor of the Chambers or with her community where she is evenly spreading dividends of democracy through community projects that are either funded by the National Assembly or through her personal capacity.

Dabiri-Erewa, who is currently the Chairman, House Committee on the Diaspora is said to have two options before her. She is also said to be a good material for the office of the Deputy Governor if her party candidate emerges from the west since she comes from the East. Two, she can decide to move up to the Senate if Senator Ashafa currently representing that axis at the Senate eventually emerges as the next governor of Lagos State.

Idiat Oluranti Adebule

Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, the current Secretary to the State Government (SSG), is an educationist. She Holds B.Ed (Islamic Studies), M.Ed (Religious Education), M.Phil (Religious Education) and Ph.D (Curriculum studies) all from Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

Before she was appointed as the SSG, she had taught at both the Lagos State College of Primary Education and Lagos State University, both situated in Lagos, Nigeria.

This 43 years old unassuming woman from Badagry axis of the state is also a material to watch towards 2015.

Oluremi Tinubu

Presently, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who represents Lagos Central Senatorial District at the Senate is leading the park of women politicians to watch in Lagos. This wife of the former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, no doubt combines brains with beauty. Although she claims to be too busy minding her legislative duties at the National Assembly, political watchers are of the conviction that her performance in the Senate where she gives her constituents robust representation as well as her provision of unequalled constituency projects are aimed at higher political patronages in the future.

For instance, her name is in circulation in three areas of political discourse. One, she is believed to be equal to the task of being the first female governor of the state, if not that her husband, Tinubu and the current Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), comes from the same Central. Secondly, she is said to be a formidable material for the office of the Deputy Governor if aspirants like Dr. Muiz Adeyemi Banire, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, and Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat (all from West), or Senator Bareehu Olugbenga Ashafa from the East emerge governorship candidate.

But a close associate of the Yeye Are Ago of Egbaland confided in Daily Sun that “Yeye would not mind returning to the National Assembly in 2015,” disclosing that “if the All Progressive Congress (APC) merger plans work out well, she would want to be a principal officer.”

Sarah Adebisi Sosan

Pricess Sarah Adebisi Sosan, a brilliant educationist was the immediate past Deputy Governor of the state. She paired with Fashola for only one term before she was replaced with the current Deputy, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefolure.

The Awori Princess, has commenced underground maneuvers to contest for Senate in 2015. The vocal woman, it was learnt hinges her aspiration on the step taken by the Senator representing her district, Ganiyu Solomon, who has publicly declared his governorship ambition. If he goes, Sosan, who handled Education Ministry as Deputy Governor wants to succeed him.

Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire

Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire is the current Deputy Governor of the state. She is the daughter of Karim Ilaka, a popular politician in Alimosho Local Government area of Lagos State. She was once a Commissioner. She supervises the Ministry of Women Affairs presently where she has empowered a lot of women and has become popular amongst the women folks.

Although she is just spending her first term in office, her retention for a second term would depend on the party arrangement, as well as where the next governorship candidate would come from. She is from the west and can pair with the likes of Senator Ashafa from the East.

Kemi Nelson

The ageless former Commissioner in the state, Mrs. Kemi Nelson is still a respected party leader in the state. Very close to the king makers in the party, this professionally trained nurse turned politician may bounce back in 2015. She is an Amazon to watch closely.

Funmilayo Tejuoso

She was a former Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Though she is still in the House, she is no longer the Deputy Speaker. She was impeached in the last dispensation, and all her efforts to regain her seat in the current dispensation proved abortive. Yet, the fair complexioned lawyer/legislator still remains relevant as far as party politics is concerned in the state.

Derin Disu

A legal practitioner and one time Local Government Chairperson, Mrs. Derin Disu is currently Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Fashola on the Lagos Central Business District. Gentle outspoken and cool headed, this politician, no doubt has more things to offer the state and should be watched.

Toun Adediran

The Surulere, Lagos State born alumnus of the University of Lagos was the pioneer Deputy Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly between 1999 and 2003. During her tenure, the opposition party raised an issue about her age which he weathered through. While she claimed to have been born in 1968, her critics insisted she was born in 1972 and so fell short of attaining the required age to be elected as a State legislator.

However, she is currently Woman Leader of the ACN in Lagos State. She is always visible at all party events thereby positioning herself for future political challenges.

Toke Benson

Mrs. Toke Benson, another legal practitioner is also a member of the pan Yoruba socio-cultural and political organization, Afenifere Renewal Group. Although she is currently working underground, tendencies are that she may spring a surprise towards 2015. She is also to be watched.

Folashade Ojo

Folashade Ojo is daughter of the National Leader of the ACN and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. She is married to an Ekiti State politician, who is currently in the House of Representatives.

She presently works closely with her grandmother, Chief Abibatu Magaji, the President-General of the Market Men and Women Association of Nigeria. While Mama Magaji is the Chairman, Lagos State Market Management Board, Mrs. Folashade Ojo is the Vice Chairman of the Board.

And with this affinity, it would not be a surprise if Folashade Ojo rises higher politically in 2015.

I personally think Abike Dabiri-Erewa fit to take over from Fashola as the next Lagos governor or as the next Lagos deputy governor.

Oluwatoyin Abike Dabiri-Erewa
An ultimate example of a truly strong African woman sums up her rare virtues. A quintessential woman, icon of pivotal strength and courage are traits that stand her out. She has, through perseverance and unflinching courage, transplanted herself to heights many fear to attain. She is not just a role model, but a performer with a glowing track record to show. To her immediate family, she is a lovely wife and cherished mother. While to others, she is simply a distinguished politician, reliable colleague, trusted friend, an engine house, a priceless jewel and a gem of inestimable value. Abike is an orator and an irresistible speaker with an ability to hold an audience spell bound. Describe her as a sturdy bamboo in the dense forest of Nigeria’s intellectual universe, and you would be apt. Her razor sharp intellect and charisma exuded at any given opportunity stands her out.

A journalist of repute; daring; highly positive about the future of Nigeria; principled to the core, are qualities that adhere her to the hearts of all. In the midst of these glowing attributes, her demeanour bellies all.

She is a woman with great depth and the fear of God. These are reflected in the way she tackles issues on the floor of the House of Representatives and on the type of issues she choses to dwell on.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, an accomplished journalist with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) rose through the ranks in a remarkable and meteoric manner, and joined the rough terrain of politics to become an indefatigable lawmaker. A member of the House of Representative who swept the poll with a landslide victory consecutively. While in the House, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa distinguished herself by working tirelessly and was one of the lawmakers that stood against the third term bid of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In all her years as a journalist, her professional ability, competence and integrity were never called to question. Blunt to a fault, this lawmaker is nonetheless always outspoken on critical national issues as it affects the country and Nigerians. She was elected into the House of Representatives, where she became first, the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, and currently, the chairman of House Committee on Diaspora Affairs.

Though, from Ikorodu in Lagos, She took in her first breath in Jos, Plateau State, in North-Central. She started her education in 1968 at Maryland Private School in Ikeja(Lagos State), from where she proceeded to Saint Theresa’s College, Oke Ado, Ibadan(Oyo State). Abike then, moved on to Lagos Polytechnic for her basic studies and later to Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife(Osun State), where she graduated with a B.A Hons in English Language. Also in her kitty is a Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos and also a Masters Degree in the same course from the same institution. This amazon of intelligence also attended the Harvard University (Kennedy School of Government) USA.

A widely travelled woman, she is a member of many professional associations and has bagged quite a bunch of enviable awards. Though married with children, this multi-tasking woman has been able to balance her life so that no aspect suffers. In all of these, she would readily tell anyone that listens that the road to success wasn’t a bed of roses, neither was it smooth-sailing.

She represents Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Lagos in the National Assembly. Her doggedness in the pursuit for justice, equity and welfare for the rights of the common man no doubt made her constituency to keep her on board. This is Abike’s third term in the parliament.

Despite the rigours of her job, Abike is always loving, humble and sensitive to the plights of people. By natural inclination, she has time for everybody she comes across, notwithstanding status. Always going beyond the call of duty to help, no matter what the odds are. To this woman, politics should be all about service, humanity and making a difference in the life of the electorate.

Going beyond the call of political duty due to her compassionate nature, made Abike to initiate the Abike Dabiri Foundation. Many children have benefited immensely from this course.Abike, by a wide consensus, has been a role model to many, particularly women. She is a hallmark of integrity in service. A woman of strength and character.

Like her or hate her, she has through dint of courage and hardwork etched her name in the country’s history of indomitable women. In essence, Abike is a trail blazer that makes the womenfolk rock.
