US Warns Nigeria Must Protect Rights Of Civilians. by Lex1(m): 1:47am On May 16, 2013
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Nigeria must protect the rights of civilians and avoid any “heavy-handed” response as it moves against Islamist rebels to enforce a state of emergency, a top US official said on Wednesday.
“We call on Nigerian officials to ensure that Nigeria’s security forces protect
civilians in any security response in a way that respects human rights and the rule of
law,” State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.

He also urged Nigerian authorities to investigate clashes between soldiers and
Islamist gunmen last month in the town of Baga on Lake Chad in which about 200
people were killed to ensure “those responsible are held accountable.”

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan issued the emergency decree late Tuesday, acknowledging for the first time that Boko Haram militants had “taken over” parts of northern Borno state, the insurgents’ stronghold.
The military then announced Wednesday that a “massive” troop deployment was
under way.

Washington was watching how the Nigerian authorities handled the state of
emergency, Ventrell said.
“We have made clear to the Nigerian government that its heavy-handed response to insecurity in northern Nigeria and the failure to address human rights violations will potentially affect our ability to provide security assistance going forward,” he added.
Jonathan said the Boko Haram violence, which has left thousands dead since 2009,
can no longer be treated as “militancy or criminality.” The latest violence, including the brazen attacks in the northeast, amounted to “a declaration of war,” he said.

Human rights is virtually non existent in Nigeria. Civillians are denied of their fundamental rights, you see an army guy flogging someone or a police torturing someone.

The Americans should go to HELL. Where was human rights when US invaded Iraq? What happened to human rights with all the drone attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan? When they invaded Afghanistan to fish out Osama Bin Laden, did they respect human rights? In what way have they helped the authorities in curbing Boko haram other than issue SENSELESS press releases? Where is the human rights of the people living in Gaza? Nonsense!

The president has already made it clear in his broadcast that the solders must do everything "within the RULES OF ENGAGEMENT". We dont need any stupidd and dumb US official to tell us what to do.

What is clear is that US has sinister agenda. They'r clearly not happy with the visible progress that is taking place in the south of Nigeria. They'r not happy with the role China is playing in helping Nigeria develop. They'r not happy with the PIB.

But whether they like it or not, Nigeria will march forward and take its rightful position as the real giant of Africa. Once again, US can go to hell. Ediots!

It's crystal clear now that the Americans are backing this lunatics. I bet the nigerian unity is giving them a problem. Now they remember human right, when the Nigerian government has decided to take action against terrorism. America are doing more bad than good to the world

The US is obviously working very hard to see their prediction of Nigeria disintegrate before 2015.

This interference is what is causing the high casualties in law enforcement and fueling the lack of respect for authority which is endemic in nigeria.

One report said the police were instructed to hold back in troubled areas in order to avoid conflict with civilians.

Overseas, when you enter police wahala, you don enter be that and if you're lucky, your lawyer can save you.
