They were surely in a terrible situation, and having a man a.k.a 'provider' to take care of them was the only solution at that time there for them (or so they thought...), If not, I don't understand why a mother would let her daughter marry the same man as her...

Because it's men who encourage these type of beliefs... And here, it's the man who did the proposal to both mother and child I assume.
Yes, we always have a choice but we don't always see the alternative because of the subjectivity in which we are...
We can judge of the absurdity of this situation and the think of alternatives to it because we are outsiders,
The mom and the child don't see it that way, I guess they thought that it was a 'God-given' opportunity and didn't want to let that chance slip in fear of 'hungry tomorrows'...
