People shld go and read the ACTUAL Report and stop taking their interpretations of d report from a news source known for its virulent PROPAGANDA against d Govt: the Report was actuali generali FAVOURABLE and (even more importantly) OPTIMISTIC about Nigeria and d current Govt's Economic policies, although sm weaknesses were pointed out for subsequent corrections. For instance, d Report actuali said that Poverty Rate DECREASED in d last 2 years (from 48% to 46%) but d rate of decrease was not keeping pace with d much faster increase in GDP (2% Vs 7%), and was lower than d Population growth rate (2% Vs 2.7%) thereby producing a situation whereby though d Rate of Poverty is decreasing, d No of persons actuali in Poverty has slightly increased cos of d higher Population Growth Rate (hence, d advice from d Report to Govt was to 'increase' d Rate of Decrease of d Poverty to keep pace with the much faster Rate of Economic Growth, ie improve Distribution of d considerable Wealth been made in d Economy to as many people as possible esp those in d Rural areas, as well as also ensuring that this Rate of Decrease in Poverty outpaces Population Growth Rate)...... duwdu: Dear Nairalanders;

The following just got published by Premium Times...

http://premiumtimesng.com/business/138525-world-bank-indicts-jonathans-government-says-massive-poverty-unemployment-killing-nigerians.html

While I do not believe in holding fort for the Nigerian Government, I think the World Bank would have done better by telling us the other side of the story. Unemployment is on the rise everywhere in Europe (thank God we have DSTV, STRONG,HITV, etc) to watch the police beat protesters every day every where in Europe and in the USA. The World Bank has not deemed it necessary to report these facts but Nigeria's own. The gullible ones amongst us who queue up everyday in front of the US Embassy just because they fail to get themselves properly informed (they use their cable television only to watch movies instead getting informed round the clock) are busy running their mouths here instead of looking for better ways of engaging themselves.
Even from the so-called report, I do not see how it is Jonathan that is behind unemployment or poverty. We should for once be realistic in our analysis when it comes to Nigeria. A lot of positive stuff is going on around us even though I agree that our politicians are thieving demons who are undermining the growth of this nation. It is however a fact that the people themselves connive with these Ogbanje politicians in many ways to further impoverish the country by collecting stupid bribes in order to hail them for doing nothing for the populace. What goes round comes round. The Nigerian populace needs to wake up and stop worshiping ill-gotten wealth and instead ridicule and denounce these demons called politicians (those not really working for the good of their people, since I know that some are actually doing well).

Just for your consumption . . . . We can safely deduce various factors that largely impacted the World bank report on Poverty indices . . .

Appears the Northern region bears more weight on the negative impacts, offcourse we all know the obvious reasons . . .
Are you admitting that the ACN led states are working harder than the federal government and PDP states? So wouldn't you think that the guys at the helms of ACN have what it takes to move the country forward? Despite the poverty level they are doing the best with what they have, despite the minimal allocations when compared to SS states?. Even small Ekiti. Shior!

Someone said Nigeria is sinking under this dispensation and he was almost 'crucified' for his comments..

The excuse being given after recognizing that their 'oga' is the most criticize n most abused is that instead of creating 500 EFCC to fight corruption, they decided to wash the pot clean so that it wouldn't invite ants to itself.

I think we should all be patient with them in as much they are insisting that the plan they adopted is the best way to fight this menace.

@Muami.., thank you for providing us with the original World Bank summary. This just exposes the type of irresponsible journalism that is practised in this country. Premium Times distorted and mutilated the original report to suit their devilish task of pull-down GEJ at all cost.

Anyway, high unemployment and poverty rates is still a major issue in this economy. The states, federal and local govts have to work very hard to curb the menace. Most importantly, we have to re-structure this country and devolve powers to the states.

Have they not seen that 1.2million jobs has been created by the mining sector?

Have they not seen that our legislators are the most paid in the world?

Which President can boast of a billion naira food budget?

Why must all these scamming agencies continue to pull down the hard-stealing efforts of Jonathan and his crooks? Why why why?!!!

The perplexing contrast between the nation’s economic statistics, rapid economic growth and minimal welfare improvements for much of the population is actually a big problem. We do not know any known economic theory or law that this situation conforms with.

To me, I think that most of those economic statistics are manipulated by those who feel they have absolute knowledge of all problem and their solutions. The father has plenty of money and the children are very poooor. What a perplexing contrast.

muami: This is the World Bank's own summary......

MY VIEW: As the Bank notes, poverty is actually being reduced and jobs are being created BUT the pace is slower than the rate of population growth and economic growth. However, it notes that Nigeria’s short term macroeconomic outlook looks generally strong, with the likelihood of higher growth, lower inflation, and reserve accumulation. This, according to the Bank presents the Government with an opportunity to make progress in key reforms and public investments associated with the Transformation Agenda for job creation, diversification, and more effective governance. In other words, the government has done well in laying the foundation by creating a sound macroeconomic outlook which can be built on to reduce poverty and create jobs. I therefore think it is unfair to claim that the Bank indicted the government or to throw a blanket condemnation of the government. Many other governments in Africa and even Europe(eg Portugal, Greece, Spain etc) currently have negative macroeconomic outlook which means that they are unable to create jobs and in fact do not have the fiscal policy space to take measures to create jobs.

JUST ONE PERSON to highlight what you've highlighted, ie that THAT report by the World Bank was actually A VERY POSITIVE REPORT which some negative-minded, cursed buffoons in the media with nothing better to do on their hands, somehow DISTORTED to mean that ''poverty has worsened in the whole country''. Backed by the usual retinue of thoughtless NL drones.

Madam Ngozi was given two cabinet positions, Finance and Economic, because of her expertise and a belief that she will apply her skills to grow the economy. So how does her administration, after two years, get such a bad scorecard from her former employer?

At the moment the only region of the nation sustaining economic growth is SW. The commercial capital of the Northrrn region, Kano is under the intimidation of terror. The commercial capital of SE , Onitsha, is equally gripped by the menace of extortions coming from armed robbery, kidnapping and baby factories.

Madam Ngozi and the PDP government has failed to propose a economic recovery in the follow up to gainful successes in pushing out terrorists in the North. Likewise they have no strategy for what to do economically to snatch Onitsha from the grips of criminals that scare away corporate investors.

Wind is blowing, the chicken a&& is exposed to view!

Sincere 9gerian: It is the JOINT responsibility of the states, federal and local govt to create jobs and eradicate poverty.

The national purse is shared 50-50 by the federal govt on one hand and the states and local govt on the other (via state-local govt joint account).

So, while we ask how many jobs the federal govt has created in the last few years and what percentage of Nigerians have been lifted out of poverty through policies and programmes at the federal level, we should NOT forget the states.

How are the states and local govts creating jobs and eradicating poverty with their share of the national purse? How many jobs has Fashola or Sullivan Chime created in the last few years? These are critical questions that demand answers.

The problem of lack of jobs and increasing poverty cannot be solved without looking at the issue of exponential increase in population. But how can we tackle the problem of population if Buhari and other northern leaders see population as a tool for winning elections, wrecking havoc and earning more funds from the national purse?

In the long run, if we TRUELY want to drastically cut down unemployment rate and poverty, we MUST re-structure this country. Power must be de-centralised down to the states. The present arrangement where Abuja tries to feed 160million people can only breed more poverty and unemployment. It should be the other way round. It is the 160million people that should feed Abuja. In other words, the states must be allowed to harness their human and material resources for development and pay taxes to the centre. This is the only way forward.

But unfortunately, the northern politicians, with eyes fixated on oil money, will resist any attempt to re-structure this country. Currently, even passage of PIB is witnessing major resistance from the north.

Until the much needed re-structuring happens, we have to make do with what can be achieved under the present arrangement. Also the Boko Haram madness must have impacted negatively in the poverty and unemployment rates in the northern states in the last 2yrs (usually the bulk of these negative data emanates from the north and weighs down on the rest of the country)

Robust and fair enough view . . .

Guy. You said the worst logic i have come accrosss. For your information, when we accuse the government of not creating jobs, we do not want then to set up the companies and the businesses that will employ us. What we want is for them to expand the scope of our economy. By this, I mean for them to drive upwards the capacity of businesses to grow in our economy.

Really, states government have liitle space to manouvre here. It is government policies that determines the scope of any economy and almost all those policies lies within the powers of the Federal government. Have you heard of Local content law, export/inport laws, exchange rates, World Trade organisation and the numerous agreement entered by teh Federal Government on our behalf? What about the ways and manners the various governments (Federal, state and local) awards contracts to foreign firms? Are you aware that the Federal Government have powers to outlaw the award of contracts to Foreign companies or at least control them to ensure we utilise local resources and manpower before exploring Foreigners? Are you aware that the federal government alone can control the dumping of several products on us which have the effects of killing our local companies (which can employ us)?

It is a cumulative effects of the above policies that are killing our jobs.

Imagine if half of the cars and compuers we use in our country are assembled in our country by Nigerian labour. How much workforce will that give? Are you aware a simple policy by the Federal government and enforcement by Customs who are purely Federal agency is all it takes to enforce that?

The problem with Nigerian is that the Government in Abuja governs Nigeria for teh interest of foreign companies and foreign government.

try understand why Muritala, Buhari/Idiagbon and Abacha was removed from Power. it is all owing to our relationship with the MASTERS of the world, who want to have our jobs for the people.

You'r contradicting yourself. The issue of contracts, purchases and local contents applies to ALL tiers of govt- federal, state and local govt. For goodness sake, the states and local govt expends 50% of national purse annually. That is huge. State govt can do alot to create jobs

Yes, certain policies and programmes can be initiated by FG but what if the states fail to cooperate because of partisan or other interests?

The federal govt should create enabling environment to attract the private sector but same also applies to the states. For your information, there's no federal land or federal people.

My point really is that all tiers of govt have a role to play in job creation and poverty reduction and we must hold them accountable.

Federal Govt Reacts To The Article

Poverty reduction: World Bank didn’t indict Nigeria – Presidency

By Daily Post Staff on June 12, 2013

Our attention has been drawn to a headline in an online news media, Premium Times, with the title “World Bank indicts Jonathan’s government, says massive poverty, unemployment killing Nigerians”. This headline, which is not supported by the story it purported to highlight, is totally untrue and false. At no time during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan has the World Bank indicted Nigeria on poverty reduction. On the contrary, the World Bank this year commended President Goodluck Jonathan and the Nigerian government for reducing poverty in Nigeria.

It is a matter of record that the World Bank’s Vice President for Africa, Mr. Mouktar Diop, visited Nigeria in January of 2013 and on the 15th of January he praised the Jonathan administration for reducing poverty in Nigeria by 2%. His endorsement of the Nigerian economy was widely published by the print, electronic and New Media.

Also, on the 7th of May 2013, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Ms. Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, addressed a press conference and revealed that the World Bank has promoted Nigeria from a low income country ranking to a medium income position saying the level of endemic poverty in the country has reduced.

Speaking during her press conference, Ms. Marie-Nelly said “The decision also followed the growth in Nigeria’s revenue as her gross national income per capita had reached about $1,200 in the past two years, prompting the Bank to undertake an upgrade from its current IDA only status”.

I might add that this is the first time in the last 30 years that Nigeria has achieved this status. I might add again that the United Nation revealed in their Human Development Index that average Life Expectancy in Nigeria had risen to their highest levels since records were kept under President Jonathan. Before President Jonathan assumed office life expectancy in Nigeria was 47 years, after 2011 life expectancy increased to 51 years. Can there be a better proof of the gradual reduction of poverty in Nigeria?

Given the facts stated above, it is obvious that the publication by Premium Times is not only inaccurate and untrue, but it is a disservice to the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and the millions of Nigerians whose hard work and increased productivity has seen Nigeria achieve the world’s fourth fastest GDP growth rate of 6.6%.

Let me also say that effective rebranding is a projection of positive things that are already happening and when a nation is showing positive growth the whole world notices. This may account for the comments by the British Prime Minister in his speech before the Conservative Party on October 10 2012 where he said “Yes, we’ve been hearing about China and India for years …but it’s hard to believe what’s happening in Brazil, in Indonesia, in Nigeria too. Meanwhile, the old powers are on the slide. What do the countries on the rise have in common? They are lean, fit, obsessed with enterprise, spending money on the future – on education, incredible infrastructure and technology.”

Finally, Messrs Premium Times should reflect on the fact that as members of the Fourth Estate of the realm their duty is to provide balanced and unbiased reportage to the citizens they serve. The fact that their top management may have been affiliated closely with a former presidential candidate who lost to President Jonathan should not becloud their objectivity.

Confirmed........Deri of Saharareporters.
