Bros a company like Shell doesn't employ up to 1,500 direct staffs..but a lot of company DEPEND ON CONTRACTS from them and this provides job for thousand others..so in GE's case a lot of ancillary services will be needed leading to creation of lot of jobs..hope you get the drift..

Transportation, catering, hotels, housing, parts manufacturers, telecommunications, etc.

Good, let the industrialisation spread across regions while ageing economic infrastructures in Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, Kano, Aba, Port-Harcourt and Nnewi be giving a new phase lift to attract more foreign investment whilst enabling laws should be put in place by NASS to encourage local investors to invest in Nigeria.

Our Politicians who have looted our country dry during Military Era should be call upon to go and bring back those loots from Britain, USA, Saudi Arabia and Swiss Banks even if it requires a legislation of reconciliation to assure them the safety of their investments in Nigeria.

The high rate of rural urban drift should be put in check to avoid weighing down Lagos, Kano, Port-Harcourt and other fast growing cities whose infrastructures can no longer accommodate spiral increase in population.

Nigeria needs selfless leaders with passion to drive their vision for grassroot development and desire to leave a legacy for their people starting from LGA to National level.

Eko Atlantic: This is great. Good for the people of Calabar.

Please what has any of this got to do with GEJ?

Do you know when GE signed the blue print for this? General Electric always had presence in Nigeria even during OBJ regime

so to suggest Foreign Investors are "pouring in" under GEJ because of this General Electric move is a ignorant and ridiculous as they come!

Congrats to the people of Calabar

^^ My exact question!

That aside, a lot of Nigerians in Nigeria are still illiterates even though they pretend to have attended university. How does GE hire the type of engineers that have kept them going for years? Local catchment area? Or is it the one thugs and criminals in different communities force foreign companies to hire their intellectually lazy citizens? Well they will for low level unskilled labour, however not for high paying skilled jobs. Most of their products, research and design engineers have and will be done outside Nigeria - no locals for that type of job. The skilled jobs which requires good education and experience if sourced from Nigeria will most likely come from Lagos, Ogun, Ibadan, states with manufacturing companies for years, PH for energy related experience requirements. For skilled positions where they'd still pay significantly, provide training and let recruits gain experience, but need raw intelligence, superior academic achievements, demonstrated leadership and communication capabilities, they will turn to recent and fresh engineering graduates with First Class and 2.1's (80%+ or 4.0+) from the best universities in Nigeria. Where are these universities? The Great Ife Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, ABU, Unizik, Covenant, Uniben in somewhat that order. When I was an undergraduate, most foreign companies came to my school (Great Ife) yearly to interview students.

So to mediocre-thinkers who are already thinking of catchment area for GE, be ready to work low-end, unskilled labour for they do not need the class of people I highlighted for such jobs. Plus it is good for their PR, social responsibility, and far cheaper too.

GE and the Federal Republic of Nigeria Sign Infrastructure Development Agreement
May 26, 2009

Landmark agreement sets the stage for sustained development of critical infrastructure in Nigeria; GE and Federal Government of Nigeria to forge infrastructure, training & technology partnership

ABUJA, Nigeria--26 May 2009-- General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), and the Federal Government of Nigeria today announced the signing of a landmark “company-to-country” agreement aimed at promoting collaboration between GE and Nigerian public and private sector organizations that are driving critical infrastructure projects across the country.

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice Michael Kaase Aondoakaa and GE Vice Chairman John Rice, signed the agreement today at a ceremony held in Abuja, Nigeria. It encourages active collaboration between the two parties to use advanced technologies and solutions in a way that enhances economic development and competitiveness of the Nigerian economy. It is the first agreement of its kind for both the Federal Republic of Nigeria and GE.

The agreement strengthens Nigeria’s existing commercial relationship with GE, expanding the possible opportunities to include railway infrastructure development and rehabilitation, oil and gas processing, distribution and transportation, electric power generation, water and wastewater treatment, healthcare, aviation and integrated safety and security systems.

The GE delegation also held talks with President Umaru Yar’Adua at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The President said the partnership with GE was aligned with Nigeria’s goals for growth – “GE’s leadership technology and management processes will help Nigeria meet the challenges before us and enhance our investments in critical infrastructure. This will result in macroeconomic stability and successful infrastructure development across the nation,” said President Yar’Adua.

“GE has enjoyed an excellent relationship with Nigeria for many years, providing support to the nation’s infrastructure strategy. This agreement would further strengthen our long standing relationship with Nigeria and is part of our contribution towards meeting the country’s Vision 2020,” said Rice. “This partnership will also give GE the opportunity to strengthen our own local capabilities, enhancing our ability to serve the

“Nigeria is focused on fostering stable, healthy and safe communities for its citizens,” said the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. “A partnership with GE will enable Nigeria to leverage their infrastructure competencies and drive both better economic and employment opportunities for Nigeria’s future,” said Mr. Aondoakaa.

In addition to leveraging GE’s infrastructural competencies, the two parties are agreeing to explore creating technical and managerial employment opportunities for Nigerians as well as bring GE’s renowned management and leadership training to Nigeria’s business community who will drive the next wave of high-growth opportunities for the country. In addition, another focus will be joint initiatives designed to heighten Nigeria’s reputation globally through a solid compliance and integrity program.

The agreement also envisions cooperation in the establishment of an investment framework that will position Nigeria as a regional export center for GE’s infrastructure technologies.

GE has had a long-standing presence in Nigeria in transportation, energy, aviation, healthcare and oil & gas, among other sectors. Today, there are almost 200 GE employees in Nigeria based in offices in Lagos, a GE Oil & Gas Service Center in Port Harcourt and a facility in Onne Port

GEJ signing any agreement for this project don't mean much, the credit goes to Yaradua because Yaradua signed the infrastructure agreement between Nigeria and GE back in 2009 and this project is a manifestation of that agreement.

At the recent contract-signing ceremony, Nigerian officials called the agreement with GE a significant milestone for Nigeria's electricity sector, with the new plants expected to play a major role in improving the country's power generation capacity when they enter service in 2007.

All of the gas turbines for the five projects are GE Frame 9E machines. Installation sites include:

Since the units will operate solely on natural gas, the five new power plants will help to harness Nigeria's abundant gas reserves, which rank as the tenth largest in the world.

The gas turbines initially will operate in simple-cycle mode, with conversion to combined-cycle planned for the future.

In addition to the gas turbines, GE will supply generators and transformers, and will supervise the erection erection /erec·tion/ (e-rek´shun) the condition of being rigid and elevated, as erectile tissue when filled with blood.

Fantastic development for many reasons. I especially love the parts highlighted below:

When completed in the next three years, the facility will
be the biggest in Africa

Besides, it intends to make Calabar the hub of its
manufacturing activities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Indigenes of the state will benefit from employment, especially if what GE seeks is
skilled labour.”

Just read through this report and you see that a factory in CALABAR was emphatically stated..
awodman:
BY MICHAEL EBOH, With Agency Report

General Electric, GE, has signed an agreement with the
Federal Government of Nigeria to invest N157 billion ($1
billion) in Nigeria over the next five years.

The funds will be invested in a factory in the South East
region of Nigeria and will help pursue Nigeria’s
diversification objectives.

According to the Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr.
Olusegun Aganga, the investment will support the
country’s industrial revolution plan.

He said, “No nation has moved from being a poor nation
to a rich one by exporting raw materials without a strong
industrial base. Nigeria has the raw materials and market
to become not just number one in Africa but among the
top 10 globally.”

Yemi Kolapo, Special Assistant to the Minister of Trade,
Mr. Olusegun Aganga, in a statement, disclosed that the
initial investment would be N39.25 billion ($250 million)
followed by incremental spending of at least $1 billion in
the following years.

She said, “The deal is expected to create 2,300 jobs and
make Nigeria the regional hub for GE’s manufacturing
service and innovation in Africa.

“The days for exporting raw materials and jobs are gone.
This is a new Nigeria, and a new Africa.”

She, however, failed to disclose what will be produced in
the factory, but noted that the factory will be built in a
free trade zone in Calabar,

GE has been increasing its exposure to Nigeria, Africa’s
second biggest economy, which is growing at around 7
percent, but faces major infrastructure bottlenecks.

The company signed an MoU with Nigeria in March to
help beef up the West African country’s woefully
inadequate power grid.

Nigeria aims to develop 10 gigawatts of additional
electricity-generating capacity over the next decade, but
it is estimated to need $100 billion of investment in the
next decade.

A lot of MoUs are signed with Nigerian authorities that go
nowhere, but the trade ministry was confident.

Now show me ωнεяε in Eko ile's post do you see a factory in calabar been mentioned...GE must have been doing business with Nigeria,no doubt about that, but GE building this factory is clearly by the effort of GEJ's administration..

Trains most likely. General Electric has had an agreement with the NRC to import train engines and coaches into Nigeria (mostly from Brazil) and refurbish the engines and coaches that we already have. However, late last year or early this year, they announced that they will build a plant in Nigeria where they'll manufacture trains for the NRC and for export. I suspect that this is the plant.

The summary of your story is that only Yoruba people can run a company like GE, so they should have located I in Lagos, but since they located it in Calabar, the Yorubas will be imported from lagos, Ibadan , Ogun to run it because the locals are not intelligent enough abi?
YOu even listed schools in order or best to worst with Yoruba schools being the best!

For a people so brilliant, I keep wondering why no major world breaking scientific achievement comes out from that area, well maybe it's because I don't read enough news after all I come from the area of unintelligent people.

After the civil war when, Lebanese and British interest we privatized, the Igbos and Nigerdeltans were recovering from the war, Awolowo and the SW snapped up shares in these companies, now many years later, these company heads, who probably attended schools in the SW now go back to recruit from their schools in the SW and you consider that a sign of greater intelligence.

I honestly thought his attitude of some Yoruba people that they are more intelligent Han orders had been eradicated on Nairaland, but it seems more work needs to be done!
