Monsanto isn't actually a person. It's just the name of the company. They rightly are the focal point of the angst against GM foods. They make a lot of money and seem politically powerful, especially in the US.

vivavik: Lemme explain 2 ur understanding, GM foods was coined 4rm the word gene, gene-modified foods.they are basically foods tht has been modified 4rm thr planting material source, they used chemicals/substances 2 alter the gene of the crop/animal, thr function is 2 improve/facilitate the growth of these foods so as 2 meet up wt the world's growing population, they can modify these genes thru seeds or the parent material itself, by either deeping thm in the chemicals b4 planting or using improved fertilizers 2 speed up the growth rate. Its virtually in evry crop known, now for those who fink garri is not included, pls research again, cos cassava stems are deeped in this pesticides/insecticides, wch causes harms 2 the natural living organism in the soil, we have improved varieties of cassava and they are all GM foods. Tht is why scientist now encourage organic farming, meaning farming wtout artificial chemicals/fertilizers, they encourage the use of animal/plant dropping as fertilizers.pls don't fink its only the white tht practice GM planting,its evry whr in nigeria now, practically all our food, especially when u dnt knw the food source.

So this Thread is againt we Geneticist...so cos I studied plant breeding now am the bad guy...if u find out about "natural selection" then u'll understand that one day maybe 50yrs frm now certain varities if crops will have died out because they couldn't compete with various enviromental stresses we are encounting now..do u this this was how the world was 50yrs ago? No! If u don't alter some plants and seeds there will be a time either drought/flooding will always pose as a threat to them.

Pls stop passing fals information just because something is bigger or more attractive doesn't mean its Genetically modified..there's a type of rice call NERICA( new rice for africa) it is not genetically modified, its just a cross between 2 diff varities to create a new one I.e oryza sativa and oryza galberina...if a white person marries a black person will u say their offspring is genetically modified??..before it becomes genetically modified it must have gone thru some procedures in the lab..either taking genes from a very different plant/ organism which will give it the desired trait.. And those of u that are saying Agric chicken etc..u are wrong, those chicken have been given food supplements..u think if u use yur vitamins and blood tonic when u were a kid do u think u'd be skinner?? Noo of course u'll be tall and huge..

Anything from the US potentially has GM ingredients. If you look at the label it may say so, it may not. Only the EU has strict guidelines in GM Food - at the moment! The people of Nigeria - Africa - need to take this seriously because the stores in Lagos frankly are full of SHIT food. Cheap SHIT food that wouldn't meet strict food regulations in other countries. Most products here are full of E numbers. And there is no indication sometimes of exactly what is IN the food made here in Nigeria. Regulation seems weak. So, in essence in 30 years time - perhaps less you will see an abundance of cancers within all age groups as they readily consume all this new fast food - fizzy drinks daily, fries, chicken burgers, even the suya meat and the chicken you see cooking on the street is sometimes ORANGE in colour. Potentially over time even that could be carcinogenic.
