Fresh tension is rising in the Niger Delta following the Federal Government’s failure to provide jobs for about 10,000 former militants so far trained by the presidential post-amnesty office.

It was learnt that the unemployed amnesty beneficiaries are now roaming the streets and creeks of the region, months after their training.

National Mirror learnt that some of the “frustrated former militants have returned to the creeks apparently to make ends meet in whatever way possible.”

Some stakeholders feared that the former militants could return to their criminal antecedent in the creeks and along the waterways in order to earn a living.

Investigations showed that the plight of the former militants was worsened by the Federal Government’s failure to initiate measures to meaningfully engage them after their training.

National Mirror gathered that a paltry 200 beneficiaries have so far been employed due principally to the effort of the Chairman of the Post-Amnesty Office and Presidential Adviser on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, who is said to be greatly worried by the development.

Are they no longer receiving their N65,000 monthly "stipend"? After training them, they expect government to also provide jobs for them! What should the millions of law-abiding, hardworking Niger-Delta youths who are not beneficiaries of the amnesty do or are they not entitled to such largesse? The JTF should deal with those lazy pricks ! The Amnesty in itself is a fraud!

criteria for qualification of Nigeria's welfare state

1. Proximity to oil well
2. willingness to take up arms against the state

what a warped idea, great Nations are know for creating welfare for the weak, the old and the sick. . . . .we are rather providing ours from criminals

You can not build a healthy society with policies like these, our government is failing everyone and there is poverty everywhere but to take up arms and destroy pipelines is a matter of choice of reaction to adversity. This kind of behaviour should not be encouraged!

Bad reporting (press). The youth have been trained and like every trained artisan should start something with the monies they have been receiving, because journalist want to report sizling news doesn't give them permission to heat up the polity

[b]It was only a matter of time...

From day 1, I never supported this amnesty move. It was never the solution but more like putting fresh paint on a damaged house. Many people from the creeks made something of themselves. Many Ijaw men work for big IOC's and other big companies. The creeks and Niger Delta villages are in dire need of attention, but these boys were never fighting for the people but for money.

Everyday, companies recruit subsea welders, fitters, e.t.c to work. These militants were trained in many of these skills that the industry needs, but the truth is that Working is hard. Genuine work is hard. The money does not even match the stress of the job. Some of these boys will never be able to work except by force.

I would have thought that during the amnesty period, the government would have used that period of calm to properly train the Nigerian security forces. Put in place measures to tackle any new uprising. Basically take advantage. BUT NOOOO!! They just relaxed. Paying criminals not to be criminals. Now they cant pay again, what do you think would happen?! The Nigerian Navy still cant properly police the waters of the Niger Delta. The Nigerian Police are still as incompetent as they ever were if not worse, the Army have their hands full with Boko Haram and Mali at the moment... So really, we are all heading back to square one.

You can take the militant out of the creeks, but you cant take the creek out of the militant.

A good reason why amnesty should not be encourage for Boko haram members. On a serious note, I thought these ex-militants were training on self reliance programmes. Why are they waiting for the government to give them a job. They should implement these trainings in their lives rather than going back to the creeks. These boys deserve the same boko haram treatment.

So after training them govt should also employ them? What utter rubbish reporting is this? The have the skills thanks to the govt, why cant the start a mini business? If the want to go back to militancy, no problem, all the FG needs to do is pull out all it troops from liberia, guinea bassau, sudan and mali and redeploy same to the niger delta, meanwhile NIBBAT 1 special warfare troops should be stationed at bayelsa. . . . Bt i pray those nimwits dnt go back to militancy/armed robbery
