Fashola Commissions Carter Bridge Lighting Project. PICS by EkoIle1: 4:22am On Jul 01, 2013

The Carter Bridge may be the oldest bridge linking Lagos Island to the mainland, but it’s now brighter at night as Governor Babatunde Fashola switched on the street lights over Carter Bridge under a rainy Sunday night as part of the state’s public lighting projects.

The event took place near the Idumota end of the bridge, where governor Fashola described it as a transport as well as security solution.

In his brief remarks before switching on the lights, Governor Fashola said the lighting of the bridge was in consistency with his administration’s commitment to power facilities in transportation and housing adding that in the area of Power the administration has focused on traffic lights and street lighting.

Governor Fashola, who noted that the lighting of the streets has improved security in the State and enabling people to move around safely at night, described the lighting of the Bridge as “a transport solution as well as a security solution.

He said he is hoping that the bridge would record capacity use now that it has been lit up, Governor Fashola declared, “It will increase their choices of getting in and out from the Island and onto the Mainland”, adding that the lighting of the bridge also had significant economic impact.

Making history as the first bridge in the country to have public lighting powered by an independent power project, the Carter Bridge project covers public lighting starting from the Idumota area to Ijora Olopa, Iddo Terminus and towards the Third Mainland Bridge, Adeniji, Ebute Ero and Ofin.

In addition, the switch on ceremony for the Carter Bridge public lighting project marks the first public infrastructure facility to be powered by the Lagos State Independent Power Project (IPP) and forms part of the Island Power Expansion Project which will also include the connection of four general hospitals, 14 schools, two waterworks, one transfer loading station, two court facilities, two stadiums and 30 kilometre additional public lighting as well as Tinubu Square.

Inch by inch, mile by mile, we are lighting up our streets and laying strong foundation for to separation from the worthless National grid via our new underground cable transmission.

Anything is indeed possible with competent, dedicated and credible leadership.

I was on third mainland bridge this morning around 5am,the sight of the bridge and other areas were beautified with light.
Yeah,Fashola has tried on the environments of Lagos,I think he should concentrate the rest of his tenure on reconstructing primary and secondary, and make them to be mega too.
Honestly,I don't like the state of most primary and secondary schools in Lagos. Eko o ni baje o!

Everybody is now fatigued of fashola this and fashola that.
Too much familiarity brings contempt.

Don't you think that education is more BASIC than beautification projects that have been the focus of Fashola's six years of running Lagos?
How will the beautification be sustained if children are not all educated
Was Lagos not very beautiful in the 60s up to early 70s? Why/How did it all go to rot?
What is the role of non-maintenance in the gradual deterioration of these facilities?
Could sustained investment in education with particular emphasis on vocational schools and technical colleges have salvaged the situation?

Those are relevant POLICY questions the tax paying public should be asking our media-hugging governor.

But it's far better for a governor to commissioned street lights than a president of federal republic of Nigeria, commissioning a mere bread.

Unfortunately for you, Lagosians care less who is commissioning this or that as long as they get seercice delivery from the people they put in office somethingand pay to deliver and better their lives and they get that nearly everyday since a day or week doesn't go by without us commissioning ....

Lagosians are steady moving ahead and running creative circles around your worthless and incompetent masters and their power supply responsibilities and failures by attaining the most basic service your masters failed to provide.

Your worthless Abuja masters can not guarantee our institutions and streets uninterrupted power supply, but Fashola in Lagos state can guarantee that. Fashola promised to light up our streets and he's doing just that, Fashola promised to give our hospitals, schools and other government institutions uninterrupted power supply and his doing just that.

Your Oponuchukwu Oga made so many promises to give us uninterrupted power supply, but na lies, beans and cruel deceptions.

Things like commissioning and who is commissioning this and that only troubles shallow and mentally inadequate people like you because you are not used to competency and service delivery and your Jonathan oponuchukwu remains incompetent and lazy since his best achievement and vision so far is his stolen cassava bread absurdity even with all the oil money at his disposal.

Fashola is doing what your lazy, incompetent and braintard masters are grossly incapable of doing and he's doing it daily with ease and you lowly servant is here farting in your own mouth with your usual and predictable loser grumblings...

God bless Fashola

God bless the Great state of Lagos

God bless our Great SW Region

Forward ever and backward never

You obviously cannot see that Jonathan is promoting a POLICY on local agriculture and use of cassava instead of imported wheat to make bread and create employment opportunities not just for cassava farmers but also in the related agro-industries that will convert the raw tubers into flour.
I guess once it is not s shine shine media-friendly project like toys for babies you cannot appreciate. Yet you wonder why we are so backward as a people compared to the oyinbos who continue to make us their voluntary slaves

Anyway I should not be surprised as your darling governor was PROMOTING an English premier league club when he should know better.

Good development. Lagos has really needed its lights switched back on after decades of half-hearted to none-existent attention by previous state govts. Kudos to the Fashola govt. What we need to see in Lagos now is the building of a citywide underground drainage system, elimination of open drains and the building of raised walkways/sidewalks for pedestrians even in minor streets. Then it can start to seriously challenge cities like JoBurg, London, New York and co.

Also, it will help if folks saw these developments in their proper context - as Nigerian achievements - and not let sectional parochialism becloud their reasoning. wink

Cassava bread remains OBJ initiative and the topic here is power supply which the worthless and incompetent president can not provide after tons of lies and broken promises, but fashola is steady doing it in Lagos state with ease.

We'd love to see it that way, but not when the same Nigerian stands in your way and keep stunting your progress.

We are at this point today becase we have dedicate leaders with great sense of duty and purpose who are willing to be creative and find meaningful solutions needed to get around the tons of federal roadblocks in our way.

For us to even see it as a Nigeria thing, let Nigerian return our 271MW power plant to start with.

Their bad bele and roadblocks manifested the problems we are spending our own money to solve..

Who built Afam power plant?

Btw, what's this irrelevant question got to do with that fact that Fashola is succeeding where your worthless FG failed miserably?

The power game is yet to start and LSEB (Lagos State Electricity Board) is already miles ahead with strong groundwork and platform from plants to underground transmission cables to operate on.

This is one thing I love about the state agencies, the drive competition to deliver is intense.

Giving Lagos character one step at a time.this is a major factor when you are trying to build a tourism industry. Landmarks , monument and the likes.

EKOILE PLS TELL GOVERNOR FASHOLA TO BUILD A MASSIVE STATUE OF AT LEAST 20 STOREY OF YEMOJA BESIDE THE THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE. AND TO THOSE WHO ARE SAYING RUBBISH, CARTER BRIDGE IS LAGOS AND LAGOS IS CARTER BRIDGE. ONLY THOSE WHO ARE BORN IN THE SPIRIT OF LAGOS WOULD UNDERSTAND THE HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE OF THIS BRIDGE TO THE EVOLUTION OF LAGOS . AMO ARA WA.EVEN THE NEW LEKKI BRIDGE HAS NOTHING ON CARTER.
CARTER BRIDGE IS OUR LONDON BRIDGE AND WITH TIME, I SEE A TIME WHEN SOME OF THOSE OLD BUILDING IN THE BACKGROUND WOULD GIVE WAY FOR HOTELS AND RESORT FOR THE CONTINOUS EVOLUTION OF LAGOS STATE

Seriously are we just discussing about street lights over a bridge alone or is there more to this news I can't see, because if there's this much noise over street lights then I can imagine what will happen when a bridge is completed. I guess I should start appreciating Akpabio more for the street lights on my street (Ewet Housing for people who wish to confirm ).
