Half of Us In Senate Own Guns – Ndume Posted by: Channels Television Posted date: July 06, 2013 In: Current, Headlines | comment : 0 Comments and 0 Reactions As Nigerian Senators debated a motion to urge the parliament to stop alleged moves by Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, to arm vigilante groups in the state with rifles in his decision to address insecurity in the state, progressed, Ali Ndume (Borno South) revealed to the chagrin of many that about half of the 109 senators in the Senate own guns. Mr Ndume, who was canvassing for the arming of vigilante groups, said “if the gunmen or attackers know that the villagers own guns the situation would have been different. “And let me ask this question Mr President, why is it that almost half of us here own guns.” But feeling uncomfortable with the statement, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the sitting, quickly asked Mr Ndume to retract the statement, saying he could not substantiate the insinuation. According to him, Mr Ndume has not searched the house of any senator to ascertain if senators own arms or not. In his attempt to retract the statement, Mr Ndume said he was not portraying the senators as indiscriminately possessing arms, rather he was only emphasising that concentration should centre only on those who possess arms for harmful purposes and not on those who possess it for self- defence or for hunting. |

He is very correct, what retraction is Ike asking of when we all know that an average Senator has up to 3 heavily armed security. In fact he underrated the statistic, all of them own guns. |

I honestly think besides tribal bias, insincerity is a killer standing in the way of Nigerian growth. If the senators are not sincere to the people who elected them, why on earth does Nigeria have the so-called National Assembly? As the Senator Ndume has alluded on the floor debate, militants or armed robbers will think twice before engaging a village or quarters where considerable individuals possessed firearms. |

Our senators are now robbers that are armed thus qualifying them as armed robbers. They are complaining of insecurity, well have they started paying our policemen and women who risk their lifes to make the country governable for them at least 250,000 naira a month apart from other benefits ?. What life assurance policies are in place for them ? A senator collects 27 million naira a month apart from other bribes here and there while a policeman (more important citizen) collects maximum of 150,000 naira a month (rare cases) usually 50,000 naira a month 1 Like |

the debate is not about how many senator or rich men has guns, if that is the case of course all of them has guns but the debate is far from it. why are we talking as if we are ignorant of the happenings around? are we trying to support the arming of zamfara state vigilante? look we has not forgotten those who introduce sharia into a secular Nigeria state. we need to walk carefully with any demand on arms. the zamfara people knows their real enemy(gun men), they are the fulanis they know them. read the below website. http://nigeriacamera.net/thousands-of-fulanis-flee-zamfara-over-kizara-village-massacre/ http://news.naij.com/38375.html http://www.myhopeconnect.com/pt/Thousands-Of-Fulanis-Flee-Zamfara-Over-Kizara-Village-Massacre.6-26-2013/blog.htm http://africzone.com/thousands-of-fulanis-flee-zamfara-over-kizara-village-massacre/ my point is that what is good for A is equally good for B. the issue here is to retract weapon from Fulani herdsmen not arming another group. if we will go the direction of arming groups we need to start by arming Plateau, benue, nasarawa,s.kaduna ibos and yorubas. the same problem we face up north is also present in the south. therefore I blv disarming fulanis is the best option to our nation. 1 Like |
