Wow!! What a great thread! Kudos to the OP! OAU Ife definitely has a rich cultural heritage. I respect you guys, my best friend is an alumnus, as is my dad.

These fallen union leaders sound like they were made of greatness. They sound like bonafide legends. Unfortunate deaths, but wont we all pay that price? At least their deaths are not obscure and insignificant. Marked their places in the sands of time.

I too have seen violence close-hand, i went somewhere that was the "den" of all cult activities. I have seen men gunned down, PLEASE DO NOT BELIEVE THE MOVIES! A shot to your chest will incapacitate your DESTINY! Ah! The experience(s) of schooling in Nigeria.

I was in a Northern school then. I remembered that was the period every VC, Rector and Provost were organising crusade in various campuses and fake cultists were submitting their arms. Am talking between 600 and 1000 students coming out to confess of being cultist.

OAU had and probably still have an aggressive and zero complaint stand against cultism. Because of this, cultists from other institutions came with the sole of purpose of eliminating the students' union executives who were known to be on forefront against cultism.

That is the reason for the attack, none of those killed was a cultist. They came for the executives but only got one of them killed while the other four students were collateral damage

You are correct bro. You dear not show any tendency of cultism in Ife. You dare not fight, use weapon eg knife or any sharp object while in OAU. I could remember how we used to walk in the mid-night all in the name of reading from 11pm to 3am. Ife was peaceful and conducive for reading. Great Ife. RIP Iwilade and others.

Ola Johnson: It's exactly 14 years that cultists attacked Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, killing no fewer than 10 students. Prominent among those killed was the Secretary-General of the Students' Union, George Iwilade aka Afrika (founder of Afrika Forward Movement AFORM). It was said that the cultists struck in the early hours of the day after the initiation rites of members of the Keggites Club in the dining room of the Obafemi Awolowo Hall in the university had been concluded. No sooner had the initiation rites ended, and people retired to their rooms than the cultists struck. They were said to have sporadically shot which made students run, as cult attack and shooting were unusual on campus.

Share your experience of what you saw that day or what you were told. And how true was the claim that the cultists were sent by the then VC.

Moderators, front page.

I was on campus on the 15th of July just to go see what OAU was like and sincerely, I loved the experience a great deal. It was almost business as usual and different people were doing their things. I remembered visiting AWO Hall and the guys in Block 2 and 3 singing for me and my other 3 friends chanting College Boys whenever we were approaching their block. It was funny because in actual fact we were students in the Polytechnic but I feel they could see the awe on our faces and the fact that we were appreciative of everything around which gave us out as jjc cheesy. The good thing was that it was an inspiration on why we must attend Ife and luckily 3 of us made it to the school.

July 10th, 1999: The beginning of the end of cultism in OAU.
You'll be amazed how student don't fear darkness in OAU just because the dark days were gone.
RIP to the fallen comrade + the medical student victim.

RIP, to Afrika and Eviano.
On a different note, UNILAG from my time there (1999-2004) was very peaceful. Only one minor skirmish in my year one and nothing more. Omotola put paid to cultism in UNILAG.

JJCs are easily spotted in AWO hall. Even we know who the faj boys are when they come around. There is an aura that goes with staying in AWO that I simply can't explain. No dulling in AWO. Never come across any suegbe Awoite.

BROS, lemme explain the little i knw about the incidence to you for your understanding.

Before 1999 incidence, OAU is the headquarters of cult groups. The cult groups were very oppressive and aggressive. The students studied under fear and threat to peace and safety. It got to a stage that nobody could stand up to face these cultists. Then, Iwilade came to the fore. He was a law student and immediately he got admitted, he joined the student union and was very proactive.

As a law student, the students were suppose to be in black and white dress code, but he refuse this dress code and opted for native dress which single him out from the masses. The lecturers frustrated him because of this dress code and thereafter, he sue the school management and faculty of law to court stressing that he has the right to wear anything he felt he loved. He unilaterally won this case through the instrumentality of Gani Fawehinmi. From this time onward, he was seen as a thorn in the flesh of the school management.

Immediately he became the secretary of the student union, he rallied the students against the cultists. i was tod that because his father was an herbalist, he(iwilade) was able to confront these cultists head-long. Before you know it, the cultists from other institutions felt threatened by this single boy and decided to deal with him. So a plan was deviced to strike on the day of WORLD KEGGITE DAY because they knew that iwilade was a prominent member of the group.

On the day of this keggite day, Iwilade was so drunk that he has to be taken to his room to sleep being late in the night. immediately afterwards, the cultists struck and made way to iwilade's room and killed him. On the day of his burial, he's father said had it been that his son was not drunk, nobody can ever kill him.

contrary to this story, there was no love lost between the VC and Iwilade and we were told that the VC was head-bent to take iwilade out of his way, and the plan was executed with mastery. AJE KE LANA, OMO KU LONI......TA NI KO MO PE AJE ANA LO PA OMO JEE

I didn't school in Ife but was surprised one late evening a coaster bus full of OAU students came to the house opposite where we lived to arrest two brothers who were accused of cultism and complicity in the shooting at Ife. The two guys got a tip off earlier and scaled the fence of their house but their parents were caught and dragged into the bus by the students. One of the two brothers (don't want to mention names) read Geology and the other was in engineering. Their parents were a bit connected and their father was luckily released by police men at the Lagos Toll gate that night. That was the last time, we ever saw those two guys. I know they didn't complete their education in Ife. I learnt later they were sent to the US by their parents(can't confirm this pls). Their names were published in the Punch newspaper by police as being wanted for questioning in the cult shooting at Ife. I had finished my BSC then at UNN and came home for my NYSC!!

May the soul of the departed RIP.

I wish to add that the behaviour of the two brothers then, their licentious lifestyle and friends smacks of cultism. There's no way I could vouch for their innocence. When their names and pictures were published on the pages of the punch newspaper, no one on the entire street were surprised.

There is nothing good ...absolutely nothing good comes out of cultism!!
