bright_edge: I think I can identify with this article. I used to think I was super intelligent, primarily because I was a local champion in high school and college. But at a time, I realized a lot of persons were better than me. Before then, I used to always groan when I'm not successful in some selection process that requires some intelligence, like passing a job aptitude test or interview. For example, when I just graduated, I used to refuse to apply to some companies, like banks because I felt I was too smart to work in a bank. In retrospect, I think I was naive. I even turned down some job offers thinking I deserved more pay. With time, I had to humble myself to get to the basics of whatever I want to do, without much expectations from myself. I just had to start from somewhere and keep making steady progress. I think this has made me happier somehow. The challenge lies in trying to gauge your real capabilities. Sometimes, we underrate ourselves and at other times, we overrate ourselves.

There are two dangers in thinking you're very smart. First, it'll make you feel relaxed, thinking you do not need to work as much as others - just because you're smarter than them. This can easily lead to failure. Second, you start expecting too much from yourself. When you don't meet up to your expectations, you become frustrated and you blame the "unfair" system; instead of figuring out why you failed.
