Ponomote: Rivers State House of Assembly is made up of 32
members. Constitutionally, the house can only sit if 11 members are present. Yesterday, the
Speaker conveyed a sitting of the house for
10:30am. The Evans 5 arrived the chambers
early. As at 10:30am, the speaker, the leader of
the house and 4 other members had also arrived
the chambers making 11. At this point, the house
had formed quorum and the Evans 5 insisted the
session must start since the notice stated clearly
that the sitting was for 10:30am. The speaker
confident that other members will soon be
arriving the chambers, commenced proceedings.
Now remember that what is required to remove a
speaker is 2/3 of members in session once
quorum is formed (not 2/3 of the entire members
of the house). Out of the 11 members in session
including the Speaker, the Evans 5 constututed
even more than the 2/3 legally required to
remove the Speaker, and so they deed move the
motion for the removal of the Speaker and that
was how the Speaker was REMOVED by 2/3 if
members in session. In obedience with his
removal, the Speaker and leader of the house left
the chambers. When the Governor was briefed of
the development, he mobilized some thugs and a
handfull of Govt house security operatives and
then stormed the Assembly hallowed chambers
(at a time the newly elected speaker, the Rt. Hon.
Evans was to make his innaugural speech) and
suppervised personally (Gov. Amaechi) the beating of the Hon. Members by Chidi Lyoid and police officers attached to the him (Governor Amaechi).
Indeed, the Gov of Rivers State Rt. Hon. Rotimi
Chibuike Amaechi is the chief thug of the state.
