Experts in bomb detonation would soon not need to get closer to such dangerous objects to neutralise them as the Nigerian Airforce has invented a robot to undertake such task from a far distance. Commandant of the Nigerian Airforce Institute of Technology (NAFIT), Kaduna, John Oshoniyi on Monday said the institute had developed a bomb detective robot capable of detecting bombs from afar, and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for surveillance and intelligence gathering in crisis prone parts of the country. At a news conference in preparation for the 42nd graduation ceremony of the institute, the commandant said the bomb detonating robot, would assist the security agencies to check the series of bombings by terrorist groups. The Boko Haram terrorists group has been unleashing waves of violence attacks in the northern part of Nigeria since 2009, and bombs have become its favourite lethal weapon. On 14 February 2012, a policeman, Sunday Badang, was killed while attempting to detonate a bomb wrapped inside a bag with bare hands along Ungwar Seriki area of Kaduna metropolis. As a result of that unfortunate incident, NAFIT went into research that led to the invention of this unmanned robot. Displaying the robot before newsmen, Mr Oshoniyi said the equipment would be presented to the public as soon as it is ready, adding that the UAV, the first in Africa, was a product of the transformation agenda of the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in attaining higher pedestal in military aviation and defence related technology. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/07/22/airforce-invents-bomb-detecting-robot-to-fight-boko-haram/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter 15 Likes 1 Share |

Am reali IMPRESSED at d way d 3 Armed Services- Army, Navy and Airforce- are NOW looking inwards and providing Solutions to their needs in stead of completely relying on imports like it used to be. From 1st Ship (Navy) to 1st UAV/drone (Airforce) to 1st Armored Carrier (Army), etc. They are repairing their own Barracks with such speed (as well as those of other Sister services like d Police when called upon by d C-in-C), building State of d Art Military Hospitals and Diagnostic centres, Digitizing Military operations, Opening up new Training areas and centres, etc. They can now be said to be PROFESSIONALISM.. I was very proud of what d Army displayed as various Solutions to their needs on their last Army Day Parade in Abuja- from d Sophisticated like Armored Carrier to the rather mordane like a Field Kitchen and Hospital unit. I rememba d President and Commander-in-Chief himself commending them profusely..... Kudos to d Leaders, Officials and Men of d Nigeria Armed Forces 12 Likes 1 Share |

If this is true then I am REALLY IMPRESSED and I wish the NAF more of these types of technological innovations. I just love how the robot looks SOLID and ready to go for some action. My fear is that this may not be true... 3 Likes |

solomon111: we need to develop our own technology. Not just about wasting money, but about building local technological capacity to defend the country against external threats. Nigeria being the leader of Africa should be aggressively innovative in defense industry. The only weapon I can really trust to defend Nigeria with is one MADE IN NIGERIA. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Crassus: How can you invent something that already exist ? just say they manufactured one. even thou its highly unlikelyThey already manufacture drones, armoured personell carriers and small ships with decent electronics. Why should they now find it hard to manufacture a much easier bomb detonating robot?. 1 Like |

You can only "invent" something that does not exist. Stop selling this foolishness. Prototypes of bomb detecting machines exist on the internet. Download them, study it and you can design one yourself. But to foolishly spin out the word: "invent" here, smacks of inferiority complex! 2 Likes |
