Today marks 47 year anniversary of Northern-led bloody counter coup which enthroned Northern domination of Nigeria through the military. But this domination was not cemented until collapse of Biafra - the only southern resistance to the counter-coup.

Would Gowon had rejected Aburi Accord and declared war against Biafra, if Awo had not only rejected his political appointment offer, but insisted that the crisis and Aburi Accord was a historical opportunity to address his profound view that Nigeria was "a mere geographical expression"?

Please in your answer, state your tribe or if you don't want to, state your region using the current six regional structure of Nigeria. I am conducting a study on how ethnicity affect our response to issues and events

You've not cited MILITARY LEADERSHIP IN NIGERIA 1966-1978, by late Maj Gen James Oluleye, who was a Major in 1966. You really need that book in order to understand why and how Chief Awolowo took those decisions. And Obasanjo as Garrison Commander at Ibadan, played central roles in Awo's decisions. Well, its called Civil War History, just as the US pieced together all that led to their own civil war, how it was fought, and how they managed its aftermath. History often repeats itself. Gen Ullyses Grant, one of the most useless military strategists, received the surrender of brilliant Gen Robert Lee. Can you imagine Lee surrendering to Grant? Not only that, Grant later became president of the United States. Keep searching, and researching, the truth is very amusing, and instructive.

Just Google " There is a calculated attempt to conveniently forget the Historic antecedents to the civil war", for interesting snippets and more.

Uchek: ...I am conducting a study on how ethnicity affect our response to issues and events

Is it possible for ethnicity not to affect our responses on issues when you have people of different mentality, ideology and distinct ways of life forcefully joined together for the interest of greedy oyinbo commandos?!

But it got dirtier when those four easterners orchestrated the first ever coup in this country. Killing the rulers of the West and the North, leaving theirs in the east, blocking the niger bridge connecting the West and the North, elevating their eastern general "Ironsi" as the national military ruler and finally appointing easterners as second and third in command.

There wouldn't have been any dream of Biafra if those four generals didn't display an extreme act of tribalism, which lead to retaliation: hatred and killing of their tribe men by the Northerners, an act Ojukwu wasn't cool with.

The questions should have been, why didn't Ojukwu remember Awolowo was in prison, not until he(Ojukwu) thought Awolowo would have been a tool in achieving his "personal" dream?
Why didn't Ojukwu backoff when he realized seven mercenaries and the 4000 civilian converted soldiers he had boasted of weren't enough to free his people, but rather went on exile leaving his people hopeless?

Why was an easterner(can't remember his name now) responsible for the breakaway of mid-west from western region, hence weakening the west(indirectly the whole south) and empowering the North with their already massive land and population intentionally created by the oyibos?

FOUR EASTERNERS plus Major Victor Banjo, Captain Adeleke, and Major Ademoyega, the author of WHY WE STRUCK.

Please, explain Maj. victor Banjo's role in the coup if you can. Maj. Ademoyega was the last to be

recruited (by Maj. Nzeogwu) around early November, 1965 probably as an afterthought but what was his tasked with in the

coup? I would have thought being a Major like ifeajuna and Nzeogwu, he would have been given the task of taking out

Ironsi. As for Cap. Adeleke, well he was not a member of the inner circle. He only heard of the coup at the H-hour and

still voiced his objection though at that time, it was too late. Its either he goes along with the coup or he would have

been the first casualty of the coup.

@ op, yes Gowon would still have gone ahead and fight Ojukwu even if Awo had refused to participate in his govt.

The likes of Murtala, danjuma, abacha, dogonyaro, yar adua ati bebelo would have made sure gowon reneged on aburi accord.

Victor Banjo was a Lieutenant Colonel as at the time of the January 1966 coup and was informed about coup but he did not partake in the execution of the coup, even Lieutenant Colonel ojukwu was sounded out about partaking in the coup. ojukwu himself alluded to this fact in his book, "Because I Am Involved". The man equally given the task of arresting Ironsi was a Major like Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu and Ademoyega; Donatus Okafor.

Unless anyone can publish their prison notes and letters from the detained officers, or the military declassify their interrogations, it seems many had cold feet at H-hour, such as Majors John Obienu, Don Okafor, et al. If they had succeeded, all will claim victory. Murtala Mohammed who planned the coups of July 29, travelled abroad so that if it failed, he had good alibi. Even Babangida wasn't in Nigeria when he overthrew Buhari.

But that wasn't why ironsi had Banjo arrested and locked up in the east, was it? Else Ironsi should have

arrested both Ojukwu and fajuyi who were also sounded out by the January coupists.

But Major D. Okafor, Capt. O. Oji, 2/Lt. C. Igweze were given the task of killing Brigadier Mai-Malari and when the latter escaped, they went looking for him till ifeajuna luckily bumped into his brigade commander and coldly shot him dead.

so my questions still remains unanswered; who was tasked with killing Ironsi and why wasn't Ademoyega given this task?

Major John Obienu. Major Ademoyega was on leave. And it was his leave that was used to circulate the coded message that the coups was slated for the 14th and 15th.

Banjo was initially arrested before he was ordered to be released by Lieutenant Col. Gowon and he was later arrested on suspicions he was allegedly carrying a firearm while waiting to see Ironsi. Some officers were allocated more than on target. Anuforo was tasked with arresting Colonel Kur Mohammed and Lt. Colonels Unegebe. Maimalari and Ironsi were both allocated to Okafor. Ironsi was not at home when they came for him which made many to believe including myself that someone had inform him (Ironsi). There was a party that night at Maimalari's residence and everyone had gone home while Ironsi was said to have attended another party. Which other party did Ironsi attend that night? Which brings us to why the non-ibo officers were not allocated to key targets.

Like i posted earlier, when maimalari escaped okafor's death squad, okafor went looking for him. Which party exactly did ironsi went to and why didn't anyone go looking for ironsi?
