okoji: If you actually worked 8 years in a Bank, I hope you got to a senior level where you should have understood the risks inherent in giving references to third parties....and not just a branch boy. I am so surprised that you can claim there is no risk in references. What is the English definition of reference? There being no issue does not mean the risk isn't there. There are a lot of guys here who are just opening corporate current accounts for the first time and they should be shown the proper way things are done. I have spent many years working at different levels in different banks and I can tell you for free that references are the only ghosts that can haunt you after resignation. The truth is always the truth and does not crave acceptance. I just pray nobody remembers this post and wails. 1 Like |

bizhub: Well, you want a short term solution.... Go ahead and give references to people you can't trace... This is part of the corruption in this country. If your banking experience has not involved a story at thr EFCC or SFU, you can advocate for references as much as you want. I have seen innocent bankers rot in EFCC custody for just providing references. Ordinary address verification and other KYC requirements have destroyed careers. If this is our kind of thought process on this issue, then I am dissapointed. If you have a relation in EFCC or the financial crimes section of the police, just ask them about my opinion. Take a visit to ribadu Road ikoyi and visit the EFCC facility and ask about the bankers in detention. How are you so sure we don't have fraudulent people amidst us? Because we won? Because we have all spoken nice? Ask ladies and they will tell you the nice talking guys are usually the greatest heart breakers.... Lol No body is fraudulent until situations meet opportunity.... And when that time comes, you won't be there to control and you won't be able to check out. Banking policy States that all financial records must be kept for a minimum of 5 years after conclusion. For account opening, that is 5 years after account closure. When will these accounts we are opening be closed? How long is your reference relevant? This our posts will be here for posterity (if NL is not attacked again) and our advocacy for what is wrong or right will always be there 3 Likes |

HOW TO RESOLVE REFERENCE ISSUES. This post is to inform us on how to resolve our reference issues in less than 72 hours. If you have submitted 2 reference forms to your bank and you are being told there is no response from the other bank, visit your bank branch and ask to see the customer service person. She is usually the person who sends to the other banks, in stanbic, ask for the account support officer. Request for the status of the reference as at the moment. If it is still a 'no response' status, ask for a print out of the NIBSS status page. You see, there is a new reference clearing system that has been automated. Hard paper references are no longer sent by banks, instead it is done electronically. The onus is on the sending bank to send on time (they delay in sending sometimes and claim they have not gotten a response whilst it has not been sent) and the receiving bank to respond on time(work load prevents timely response.) Once you get the print outs, you can take it to the other bank and demand for a reason why they have not responded. The truth is that you would be told by the sending bank (your bank) to either come back for the printout (if they have not sent it) or given which makes it easy to make a demand on the responding bank. If you however have references not suitable issues, you have to get new references that's compatible with their requests. |

This is my second time of posting on this trend If you're a YouWiN! 3 awardee and you're kicking against GEJ, the thunder that will fire you is doing press up! A YouWiN! 3 awardee from the North just reacted to the throw back below by saying GEJ is sponsoring BOKO HARAM. Imagine an awardee saying that?? Well, after he receives his YouWiN! grant, it will met away like an ice. Period I don't like religious bigots and that's that! 2 Likes |

@ Denn ..Kyc is very key and not ordinary oga....Kyc lands people in trouble than even reference....who told you that he can't trace them?what are you saying?won't he make physical contact with him?How will he sign the forms without seeing and interacting with them? The person offering the assistance has up to two co-operate accounts,so he knows what reference stands for and he knows the implications too....since you feel we may have fraudulent peeps on this platform that may act funny with their account.....I rest my case...enjoy 1 Like |

Denn yea ure right about the risk inherent in signing reference for people you dont know too well but the same risk lies in signing for even your own blood brother . I think you are over flogging the risks. A referee is not 100% liable for the misdemeanor of the refereed but the bank is (account officer )hence due diligence and a proper KYC is required. That is why not all accounts require reference but ALL accounts require KYC and compliance mandate. Also a bank official that gives reference to a customer or prevails on a customer to reefer another is highly at risk cos he will loose his job if tins go wrong but a customer referencing another willingly is exposed to less risk . All you need to do is just be able to assist the bank, police, or law enforcement agencies with information about the person you refereed should there be an issue. No one will arrest you if you co-operate as the reference form says how well you have known the person and not how well you are sure he wont misbehave. Pls just get enough information as per the person you are referencing and don't claim you have known the person for too long. 2 Likes |

Denn: While it is not proper to referee someone unknown to you, I do not see any legal right to start asking references to produce an account holder. The reference is not a guarantor. The onus of KYC is on the bank and not the referee, and I am sure that the courts will rule in favour of a referee in such circumstances. 3 Likes |

Good evening house. I have read all the comments on account reference and in view of the risks analysed on this thread, am very sorry, I will NOT be able to sign reference for awardee again as I earlier promised. Again I am sorry. The posts on the risk on this thread made me to change my mind. |

konos: Try and meet one of the marketers and plead with them, carry your utility bill along, explain that you are an awardee, u need help since u are just about starting your business... If it doesn't work, then talk to someone in your church/mosque to help out... Sori about that... Its really difficult to get references |
Re: Youwin Business Competition 2013 by bizhub: 7:56pm On Dec 15, 2014 |
Please if you are yet to get references for your Youwin account,,politely approach any of your relatives, neighbours and friends that has a business account that is over 6months and plead with him or her.Think very well ,you must be able to identify @least two co-operate account owners that will be willing to assist you..To facilate the process,,ensure that your referee has an account with thesame bank you are using. So the verification process will be internal and faster...be proactive about it..wish you the best...If the account will be domiciled in the branch and count for the branch or the account officer ,it would have been a different story |

okoji: The truth is always the truth, even if bitter. If youwin can ask us all to come to abuja to sign agreement binding us all to certain tenets, despite our 'goodness', i wonder why reference short cuts should be encouraged.
