I differ.

The Soldiers have their High Elevation, as well as considerable firepower to bring down the rain......literally.

The Gun Shield although un-usually large, doesn't obscure their panoramic view of the battle space.

The section leaders and lieutenants will order their men to debus during fire fights.

The machine gunner must be able to scan and select targets, suppress the fire to enable troops to out manoeuvre and capture land.

The shield decreases situational awareness.

erg... i hate those gun-sheilds.

Massive reduction of situational awareness

"i hate those gun-sheilds"
That was the American thinking until the insurgency heated up in Iraq. After that, it was shields and armour - for the regular forces anyway.

Because they're not fighting like the army and air force also the western media doesn't focus much on the piracy issue in west Africa.

Only their men are deployed for fighting.

You'd say the same if the army received the equipment it is now in 2009.

Dakingsman, don't you think restricting access to your I.G page defeats the purpose of the page?

Your page, just like this thread, beegs blog are an important tool for re-orientation, and restricting access undermines the effectiveness of that most important tool.

I don't get why we are still buying alpha jets, what happened to the JF-17 and Su-30? Our air force lacks modern air superiority jets

time will tell bro I just asked beeg the same question. But am 100% sure the jf-17 is a Sure deal and don't forget it will take few years for our pilots to fly them, and I think thats why the NAF went for them and don't forget they are optimized for day and night capabilities and u know we can fly them for now. The jf and su's might be an futuristic plan. The alpha is an immediate need for now, but its natural to av such quest for the NAF .

Because they not new. Buying a new jet is a lot of effort. Need to train pilots, ground crew and set up a logistical support to keep them flying. The cost can be high.

Yes.

Multi-role or swing-role jets.

No one buys air superiority jets anymore.

What ever you mean by nobody buys Air superiority fighters anymore, when Uganda, Angola, Algeria, Angola, Ethiopia, Eriteria all in Africa fly air superiority fighters.

Nighttwalker here is a list of Air-Superiority Fighters available in the market, as you can see, people still buy them.

*F-22
Eurofighter Typhoon
J-11
SU-27/30
MIG-29

It is an appropriate purchase to deal with an equally appropriate threat. Zachary999 who brought us the AWACS(scoop) on the CH-3A's also gave us a heads up on the purchase of these birds.

As for the JF-17, contracts for new jets take time. There is a lot of evaluation to be done. We have pretty strong military relations with Pakistanis and Chinese. So in theory, if and when we begin proper negotiations, they would run smoothly.

thank you. One would wonder why we didn't go for the MIG29 since we operated the MIG21. The JF17 took some people by surprise but Oga Beeg have been preparing us for the news before the actual contract. But the question is still why JF17 if we were just looking for PGM compliant air assets why didn't we just buy our the upgraded alpha's, what I am actually thinking is that the Nigerian Govt wants to supplement the Alpha's with The jf17.
No rumoured Su25, scorpion or MIG29 we re about to standardise the JOINTFIGHTER17

We should start by praying that the SU-25KM deal is scuttled! It is a bad bad deal for us. The Textron was just an acknowledgment that we were/are in the market for fighters.

From MIG-21 -Jaguar Jets - Military dictatorship - Sanctions -Debts. This was the sad tale. So, we couldn't keep pace.

Nigeria has always shown interest in the JF-17. It's a natural Progression from the F-7. Seeing that we have strong military ties with the Pakistanis, it's a deal that could happen.

We've literally re-defined the role of the Alpha jet. We've had them for almost 30 years, have clocked more than 5,000 hours on them, have surplus pilots and Engineers on them, service/re-activate/up-grade them. So, it's no surprise.

NAF in dire need of Fighters in the interim, additional Dodo birds is the only logical solution.

The Alpha's would eventually soon be retired, and a replacement trainer/light attack would be procured.

Until actual JF-17 contracts are signed, we don't have them.

Those are more multi role. Other than the F22 but it was built in low numbers by US standards and the mig 29 but they old and new verstion can do strike misstions. Same with the flankers both the Russian and Chinese verstion have multi role and strike verstions.

Operating the MIG21 will not help in Operating the MIG29. All so the flanker is a better choice

No one is buying them anymore. They're a dying breed.

Just look at how BAE Systems is desperately trying to increase the Typhoon air to ground capabilities.

They are still been purchased, and still referred to as Air Superiority fighters.

All Air Superiority fighters can also perform swing roles.

Jap, they can preform swing roles, but can they preform them effectively or as effective as a dedicated Swing role aircraft?
Secondly i dont know why theres a debate about this issue, the JF-17 is a multi/Swing role aircraft and not an Air Superiority Fighter.

Personally i think Nigeria should go for a Russian platform(SU-27 or SU-30).
Cant think of any quality products from China or Pakistan for that matter.

No.

Countries are buying the latest multi-role versions.

Having a jet that performs a single role and only good at it is a waste of funds and no they can't be swing-role.

It is a cold war era thing.
