M.I.C guarantees standardisation.

Only difference is a Nigerian motorised/ mechanised battalion would have a mix of different vehicles.
That's because you have divisions.

So if say 1 armoured division deploys its division troops will be motorised or mechanised.

The problem here is that you find the division troops in soft skinned vehicles, next to tank and IFVs some on foot this makes coordination difficult. As some vehicles aren't even fitted with C2
systems.

Standardisation: of motorised and mechanised vehicles

Wrong, all vehicles are fitted with C2 systems. From Soft-skins to Tanks.

Standardisation can only be achieved with a strong local industry. There is a reason for diversification of procurement assets.

Your budget is not that big. I mean sure a radio may be fitted. But I doubt ever 4x4 has a blue force tracker for example.

At $7 billion for 2014, it's the biggest in Sub-saharan Africa.

However, we would never know, until we do know.

That's for one of the biggest militaries with a lot of capital expenditures busy fighting a war. It is not that big.

Different C2 suites, some are not.

Coordination will be a headache.

THe implementation of standardized doctrine and a move towards developing a military equipped for all threats not only current ones is how its done.

Little things like choosing a single IFV and single AFV will change the entire military

It simply because the N.A doesn't have a large local defence industry and operates a diversified defence procurement policy.

Armoured vehicle productions are still to sparse to fill the gaps. Besides, it's expensive to do that.

No country apart from the U.S, can deploy full mechanised battalions.

N.A can well fill 3 mechanised battalions, it has enough vehicles to field 5, however a lot of factors would first have to be taken into consideration.

Literally every NATO nation, as well as (amongst others) Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, China, India, Japan, Korea, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, Uganda, N Sudan, Morocco, Iran, Iraq... well... you get the picture.

Standardization requires three things:

1. Development of a military wide doctrine
2. Commitment to that doctirne
3. Procurement that account for future (not current) threats.

South Africa just aquired 236 IFV's (with follow up orders likely in the 2020's)... in peace-time... in a ZERO threat environment.

Looking at the vehical inventory of the Nigerian military gives me a headache... trying to co-ordinate and run all those vehical types is impossible.

Nigeria currently has 601 wheeled APC's and IFV's... of these there are 10 vehical types.

Say for example you standardized it with the BTR-80, a good allrounder that can be heavily upgraded. And purchased say 601 of them. (just for the sake of the argument)

It then becomes economically viable to build them... and you could build 600 over 10 years, at a cost of $500 000- $1mill per vehical (worst case $60 mil a year)
http://www.army-guide.com/eng/product116.html

You have now standardized your military, grown domestic armament industries and cut MASSIVE costs in keeping such an unweildy array of vehicals in operation.

And yes, not every single IFV should be the same vehical. Ideally you would want a light (air-mobile and amphibious), medium (amphibious wheeled) and heavy (tracked) IFV in serive... but my point remains the same, all you do is tweak the ratio's (300 light, 200 medium and 100 heavy or whatever depending on your force design)

Such a vast array of vehicals is a hinderance, a massive one, from logistics and training, to feild operations. Everything is negatively affected.

@Patches
What you say is mostly true. And mostly common knowledge.
Nigerian political types do not want to spend on hardware. Before Boko Haram, defense policy was tailored to ensure a weak military suited for "police action" or UN duties.

i agree completely. But the thing is, we cannot spend more than that. Some people, particularly in the north, even want us to slash that budget by over half.

Yes mate but unfortunately that $7 billion includes weapon purchases, your defence budget is actually capped at $4,9 billion, only a fraction more than South Africa's defence budget which stands at $4,5billion and yet the Nigerian defence force is 3X the size of the SANDF.

My personal opinion is it will be best if Nigeria shrinks the size of its Defence force to about 80000-90000 permanent personal, while keeping a budget of $4,9billion, thus allowing it to focus more on modernising equipment and training troops.

Ill rather have a small but modern and well trained force than a large ill trained and ill equipet one.
