SA Navy seems to be on a maintenance (or something) drive. Pics by Allan Roy, saairforce.co.za

The frigates are always going through some kind of maintainance but that's the first time I see such a setup. They're probably getting a paintwork.

What's happening Andrew?

Radio communication is just a stepping stone for Demfas Aerosystems. We have NAF requirements already and we're working on that. It's not something of a big deal tho in technology for us.

These kind of deals happen once in a while for the military. Talked with some Nigerians at AOC and they're willing to work on Electronic warfare. They have great resume and working esperince and some worked with some Indian firm.

So to be precise our current projects are:

Radio communication,
UAV
jamming systems and
Electronic warfare based projects.
.
The electronic warfare, we're actually working on tracking phone calls to nothing less than 500M. This can be used to combat kidnapping. The guys have good success already covering up to 23KM and tracking a phone call exact location to 200M But result is not consistent yet.

You know detecting phones like 3310, tona si obe lol no easy due to their technology.

The guys are not being paid for the work. They're willing to work for the country.

I thought that was really ridiculous. Doug over at the http://www.saairforce.co.za/forum/ got a notification about OPSEC when it came to taking pics of the sub leaving on a classified 40-day deployment.
Weeks later, the Navy News magazine asks him for permission to use his pics of the sub departing shocked shocked shocked!

You think it's a South African military thing? When I used to post on Skyscrapercity I would be in trouble with the local security personnel for taking pictures of their shopping centres. I remember two dramatic instances where a guard with an R5 aggressively approached me for taking pictures of a garden outside a casino, the other instance I was taken to administration for "shooting without permission" and they said I was gonna pay a fine of up to R20 000, WTF? Luckily I got away by saying it was for the soccer world cup and tourists wanted to see pictures of the host city.

You'll think South Africa is a progressive country, wait until you hear some of the silly laws.

NAF COMMISSIONS MACHINE TOOLS WORKSHOP, TO COMMENCE LOCAL FABRICATION OF AIRCRAFT PARTS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today commissioned the newly resuscitated Machine Tools Workshop at its Base in Makurdi, in line with ongoing efforts towards robust logistics support and maintenance culture to sustain platforms and equipment serviceability, one of the key drivers of the vision of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. According to the CAS, the import of this key driver "is to increase self-sufficiency, reduce dependence on foreign organizations for maintenance of military hardware and saving of foreign exchange for Nigeria. Machine tools enable the fabrication of some aircraft parts, thereby facilitating effective and efficient repairs of especially aircraft airframes. Accordingly, the newly commissioned Machine Tools Workshop would be invaluable to some of the processes through which the NAF sustains its equipment and platform serviceability.

Today's event, which took place at 131 Engineering Group, Makurdi, is one of the numerous benefits from the strategic partnerships between the NAF and several universities in Nigeria, as facilitated by the incumbent NAF leadership. Other benefits derived from the collaboration include the modification of the antiskid system of the Alpha Jet aircraft, construction of test benches, receipt of 2 patent rights and emergence of the NAF as the best overall research institution at the 2017 Nigeria Technology and Innovation Expo, among others. According to Air Marshal Abubakar, more than 6 research projects are currently ongoing in partnership with universities and research institutions in the country, which conforms to another key driver namely “strategic partnership with MDAs for enhanced Research and Development.

The Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Idris, expressed appreciation to the CAS for ensuring the reactivation of the machines in the Workshop, through collaboration with the University of Maiduguri, 25 years after they were abandoned. The machines were renovated in a record time of 4 weeks and at a much lower amount compared to the quotations received from different companies. The commissioning ceremony was also used to induct the first set of trainees to benefit from the newly introduced Machinist Course. The successful trainees would later operate the equipment in the new Workshop and similar workshops in the NAF.

Is this really a good business line for this company?

Especially considering the saturation of APCs in the South African market already. Wouldn't the company be better served transferring this abroad. Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Jordan, Saudi-Arabia all come to mind.

Actually they can't legally stop you from taking pictures from public ground. Same with the navy issue. The int guys have every right to stop pics being taken in the base but put side is free ground.

Of course there are limitations and you can be qustioned if you taking pics that seem suspicious. Egypt shopping center could of been worried you where scouting the place for criminal purpose.

What's important is they have the product, like Paramount Group they can setup shop in any of the countries you mentioned. Setting up in South Africa wouldn't be the greatest idea.

the death toll has now reached 35 Egyptian policemen killed

Armed militants killed at least 30 police officers in a shootout during a raid on a suspected militant hideout in Egypt’s western desert, security sources said on Friday.
A number of suspected militants were also killed and security forces are searching the area, according to a statement from the interior ministry.

Egypt is facing an Islamist insurgency concentrated in the Sinai peninsula – from two main groups, including an Islamic State affiliate – that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of members of the security forces since 2013.Islamist militants have launched several major attacks, most recently targeting churches in Cairo and other cities with the loss of dozens of lives.

The security sources said authorities were following a lead to a hideout deep in the desert thought to house eight suspected members of Hasm, a group that has claimed several attacks around the capital targeting judges and police since last year.

A convoy of four SUVs and one interior ministry vehicle was ambushed from higher ground by militants firing rocket-propelled grenades and detonating explosive devices, a senior source in the Giza security office said. The number of dead was expected to rise, according to two security sources which also revealed that eight security personnel were injured in the clashes. Another source said four of the injured were police officers and four others were suspected militants.

The Egyptian government accuses Hasm of being the militant wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group it outlawed in 2013. The Muslim Brotherhood denies this.

The Islamist insurgency in the Sinai peninsula has grown since the military overthrew President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in mid-2013 following mass protests against his rule.

The militant group staging the insurgency pledged allegiance to Islamic State in 2014. It is blamed for the killing of hundreds of soldiers and policemen and has started to target others, including Egypt’s Christian Copts. link https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/20/at-least-30-egyptian-police-officers-killed-in-desert-shootout

Because they were fighting security forces
- attack civilians = terrorist
- attack security forces = militant

There is also the fact that the group is linked with the Muslim Brotherhood which muddies the waters - is the violence driven by politics or is it driven by Islam? I am sure we could argue that question for the next week!

Same issues arise with HAMAS.
