Aahh ok!! I agree 100% If you're proficient enough to use a rifle with a scope(+accessories) then you're issued one, if not you get the regular R4.

But I also guess its down to preference as well, I know of quit a few target shooters that shoot better with iron sights than with a scope!
The upgrades are carried out under project African warrior.

The SANDF will be stuck with the R4 for some time.

Take that African pride rubbish and tell it to the Chibok girls.

Those capabilities are not those of your ATR42, not only that but your "source" discusses the capabilities of multiple different radar sets. ATR42 is a simple MPA platform, not ISTAR, not ELINT and most certainly not AWAC

And your ATR42 is the same as the Italian version
http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/release/83981/nigeria-orders-two-atr42s-for-maritime-patrol.html

with a search range of 330km
http://www.casr.ca/id-fwsar-italy-2.htm

Whilst its roles are: Maritime Patrol (surveilance) and pollution detection. With ISAR mentioned only vaguely as is the detection of radar emissions (most fighter jets can also do this) - no mention of ISTAR, no mention of ELINT, no mention of AWAC
http://www.atraircraft.com/datas/download_center/38/atr_42_surveyor_2004_38.pdf

This is the last I shall comment on this topic.

Good day

PS: To remain on topic I have attached images of the best frigate in Africa (unless the Egyptians got the land attack missiles with their FREMM)
This frigate also carries land attack cruise missiles.

In this case not in service only means not available to every infanteer. Infantrymen showing promise can play with the CR-21, and upon earning the badge "Marksman" in a section can play with everything from pistol to anti-personnel rifle.

So yes, some units within the SANDF use whatever weapons they deem fit.

This finally answers my question about why the guy in this pic has this Rifle.

Correct Mike. Denel has done a superb job of upgrading the R4, though of course the guys from 5 swear their gunsmiths do better grin.

Jap i know about project African Warrior, i just wasn't sure if it was issued to all SANDF soldiers or to selected battalions, anyway @frumentius has answered all my questions i wanted to know!

Also the R4 is a great rifle, its accurate , reliable ,easy to maintain ect ect.... Its only down fall(If you can call it that) is its a bit on the heavy side, but with Denels new upgrades its right up there with any other modern assault rifle on the market!! I for one dont mind the SANDF using the R4 for quite a few more years!

Hoooollly sh1t that is a magnificent fvcking weapon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGS2WAF2oAo

The part about being able to switch the ejector port from right to left without tools literally blew my mind

For those who dont know why: if your weapon ejects to the right, its kinda a big deal if you are left handed, because then your weapon ejects into your face/body which is not very pleasant

Also, bolt release in the trigger gaurd... no more re-cocking when you put in a fresh mag shocked That allows for seamless weapon cycling in a fire-fight... and that barrel change in under 2 seconds... daaayyyymmmmm

10/10 weapon, would equip Elite units with

UN peacekeepers killed in northern Mali

Five UN peacekeepers have been killed in an attack on their convoy in northern Mali, a spokesperson for the country's UN peacekeeping mission has said.
Spokesperson Radhia Achouri said other details were not immediately available.
Two UN security officials told the Reuters news agency that the attack occurred close to Goundam, a town in the southwest of the northern city of Timbuktu.
"It was five blue helmets between Goundam and Timbuktu," one official with the mission, known as MINUSMA, told Reuters, asking not to be identified.
A UN soldier said the convoy contained peacekeepers from the mission's contingent from Burkina Faso.

The Ugandan People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has set up a facility to refurbish and reassemble armoured vehicles at its Magamaga army barracks.

Minister of State for Defence General Jeje Odongo launched the facility last week and commissioned the first seven Nyoka armoured personnel carriers, which are assembled from old Mamba vehicles acquired from South Africa.

Djiboutian Army Unveiled for the First Time WMA301 105mm Wheeled Tank Destroyer During Parade

During a military parade held on June 27 to celebrate the 38th anniversary of its independence, the Djiboutian Armed forces unveiled for the first time a chinese-made Norinco WMA301 105mm wheeled tank destroying vehicle.
linkhttp://worlddefencenews..com/2015/06/djiboutian-army-unveiled-for-first-time.html

Djibouti’s armed forces on Saturday displayed a Norinco WMA301 tank destroyer for the first time, adding to its growing inventory of military hardware.

The single WMA301 was displayed during Djibouti’s 38th anniversary of independence parade on 27 June, which was attended by the head of state Ismail Omar Guelleh and defence minister Hassan Darar Houffaneh and the chief of staff of the military, General Zakaria Cheikh Ibrahim.

Only one WMA301 Assaulter was displayed during the parade, making it unclear exactly how many have been delivered to the East African country. The vehicle uses a 6x6 WZ551 armoured personnel carrier hull fitted with a 105 mm gun in a three-man turret, as well as a 12.7 mm roof-mounted machinegun and 7.62 mm coaxial gun. The vehicle weights around 19 tons. The type is in service with Cameroon and Chad, which, according to IHS Jane’s, have deployed them in action against Boko Haram militants.
