The report also says the Federal Government’s effort to reduce poverty rate by 2015 seems weak.
More Nigerians became poorer between 1996 and 2010, the African Development Bank, AfDB, has said.
In an annual report of the bank, titled African Economic Outlook, the AfDB said, “The proportion of people (Nigerians_ living below the national poverty line has worsened from 65.5 per cent in 1996 to 69.0 per cent in 2010.

Though the ruling Peoples Democratic Party is not mentioned in the report, the party has been in power in Nigeria since 1999, eleven of the 15 years covered by the AfDB report; with only the earliest four years out of the party’s administration.
The report, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja, also said the Federal Government’s effort to reduce poverty rate by 2015 seems weak.
“Nigeria’s prospect of halving poverty by 2015 seems weak.
“Poverty is higher in rural areas at 73.2 per cent than in urban area at 61.8 per cent,’’ it said.
According to the document, inequality, as measured by the GINI coefficient, rose from 0.429 in 2004 to 0.447 in 2010
GINI coefficient is a measurement of statistical dispersion developed by Italian Statisticians and Sociologist, Corrado Gini.
GINI index measures the extent of distribution of income or consumption expenditure among individuals or households
The report noted that the rate of poverty varied significantly between the urban and rural citizens and among the geographical zones, adding that 66 per cent of the rural population lives below poverty line of one dollar per day.
“Malnutrition is widespread. Rural areas and disadvantaged groups are particularly vulnerable to chronic food shortage and unbalanced nutrition.
“41 per cent of Nigerian children are stunted, nine per cent wasted or thin and 23 per cent underweight,’’ it said.
It added as at 2011 unemployment rate was at 24 per cent compared to 21 per cent in 2010, adding that the rate was high among the age bracket of between 15 and 24, and 25 to 44, at 38 per cent and 22 per cent, respectively.
The report noted that an average of 1.8 million people entered the labour market every year over the past five years. It quoted the statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics to have projected that number of entrance to the labour market yearly, would grow from three million in 2012 to about 8.5 million in 2015.
“Unemployment, particularly youth unemployment is an urgent policy priority, several agencies and plans have been established to tackle poverty and unemployment,’’ it said.
It said that this must be enhanced to ensure effective engagement of the youth for economic growth and development.
On social protection, the report said that though it was a priority in Vision 20:2020 plan, it was yet to have a comprehensive policy and budget support.
“Social protection policy has been on the agenda for some time. Several actors are involved in funding and ensuring social welfare.
“Mainly civil society groups with programmes supporting orphans, widows and people living with HIV/AIDs,’’ it said.

That majority of Nigerians are living below poverty level because of our insincere leaders isnt news anymore but what is most insulting is that our present political leaders peg every goodthing @2015, that is when they are promising us 'miracles'....Least i forget, what are they DOING NOW and/or all these past years?

The report forgot to mention the most heinous anti poor governance in Lagos State that have created poverty from wealth more than all Nigerian States combined.

Whereas the middle class who are not civil or public servants have their sources of income subjected to draconian legislation and authoritarian manipulation with no alternative, yet they poor are subjected to daily bashing by the agencies of the government to back to village as if the government is their personal property.

Let's concentrate on the report and forget the party as all na the same.

The country operates three tiers system of government with 1 President, 36 State governors and 774 Local government areas manned by elected, and sometimes unelected officials from different political parties since the inception of the 4th republic till date.

Singling out just the Presidency, without factoring the contributions of other tiers of government to the worsened state of the economy is disingenuous on the part of the writer ...

Didn't your Jonathan know this when he was going from one state to another making empty promises that he knew inside his heart he had no plan or know how to solve or carry out In a saner clime, he would have long thrown in the towel. If the office is bigger than you expected, you take the honourable path by tendering your resignation. Moreover you will never hear Obama blaming the states for not contributing their in the course of consolidatin the gains of America. Let him accept defeat and resign, after all Argentina had eight president in three weeks. So stop making lame excuses for him.

Fabricated statistics with strong appeal for the opposition. We are Nigerians, we know how we lived in 1996 and how we're living today. Now every rifraff has a handset and buys atleast a hundred naira recharge card per week, nearly every civil servant can save up for a car if they wish, many more can afford a fair formal education, there are fewer beggars on the streets now, a couple more nigerians can get a sip as the national wealth trickles down. Saying we were better off in 1996 implies we fared better under d military which is wrong! We are yet to attain d heights we desire as Nigeria but we've gone past 1996!!!

What is this one saying, what does Jonathan has to do with the workings of a federal system of government or you think a federate model only comprise of the Presidency?

The truth of the matter is that power is dispatched through institutions that must take responsibility. And if you want to be objective in your critique, you must hold every leader at all levels of government responsible for the country woes, not singling out the Presidency and excusing the States and Local Govts like they are made up of saints.

But Gej said he had the magic wane to turn all these around in four years. Alas we are already in the 5th year and things are getting worse! Stop defending the indefensible.

This is the shame the PDP has bestowed upon Nigerians.

I won't be surprised if some bunch of doofus come on this thread and spew that this report was sponsored by APC.

Nigerians our destiny is in our hands not in PDP. It is time to redeem our nation from the hands of these blood money suckers administered by PDP. We still have a future to save starting from now. 2015 may seem far away, but the truth is that PDP has nothing to offer this nation come 2015!

Poverty has worsened in the UK also under David Cameroon. So has it over the past few years almost worldwide.

All those tribalists who think Nigeria belongs to them only will seize every opportunity to condemn Jonathan and do as if 49 years of waste by leaders from their tribes never happened.

Imagine El-Rufai from the North like Abacha and Babangida blaming GEJ for Nigeria's oil theft problems (on another thread here on NL) that dates back as long as anyone can remember.

Why are they calling PDP like PDP is the one to deliver the democracy dividends. PDP is just a political party, its a non-living thing gringrin. It cannot talk, It cannot make laws, It cannot execute projects. Maybe you should face the people that were/are in office and leave PDP alone. The political party doesn't matter, what matters is the personality of the person in office. His ability to make Nigerians as rich as Nigeria.

Rich nation Poor people.

At the bolded. If you are actually educated like you want us to believe with this your post/comment, why not take the State Government to court on this "draconian legislation and authoritarian manipulation with no alternative"?

People like you can never see the good in anything. I'm not surprised anyway.

You are a phucking fool, what is the essence of using a gas cooker and ac in an undeveloped country like Nigeria?

What is essence of riding range rover on a road full or pot holes and mystery.

A country with epileptic power system yet you wanna use Ac.

A country where average of people salary goes on high cost of transportation, fuel for generator.

A country with poor education system.

The fact remains that PDP Never upgraded nigeria from being a third world country rather they downgraded it to fourth worls nation.

Poor medical even patience JoNathan ,Chime and more had to travel out for treatment.

Lemme stop here

Fools like you voted for them.

I know revolution is gonna happen in 2015

C pple, if we continue to criticise ourselves then it leads us no where, the bottomline is this: our destiny lies in our hands.....We need change, am not a loyalist of any party but if a party has been in power for a part number of years and there's not been any improvement in d standard of living of nigerians, then it's time for change........

The writer was a lil bit biased in his criticism by mentioning a particular pol. party.....well!!n all I can say is the political system of Nigeria allowed that in the first place...so pls let's forget about that and try to bring out the positives.....Change s all I crave for....com 2015,am voting for who's sound and credible...am tired of empty promises by all this cultist politicians...
