Police Raid Lawmaker’s House, Arrest 26 Suspected Cultists by Euroclydon(m): 6:44pm On Aug 12, 2013
No fewer than 26 suspected cult members have been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command in Ijebu area of the state.

Also, 11 suspected armed robbers were also nabbed in Abeokuta, the state capital, over the weekend.

LEADERSHIP correspondent gathered that a house in Omu Ijebu belonging to a member of the state House of Assembly (name withheld) was among the houses raided by the police for the suspected cultists.

The lawmaker’s younger brother (name withheld), who was allegedly the target of the policemen, was said to have escaped from the house with some of his colleagues.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest of the suspected criminals, said the operation was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Muhammad AbdulKadir.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the operation was part of the command’s war against cultism in the state.

He explained that the police command had been on the trail of suspected cultists across Ijebuland with a view to apprehending them and bringing them to justice.

Adejobi, who stated that the police acted on tip-off, however, stressed that security agents were not interested in the owners of the affected houses.

He said, “The operation was part of the war against cultism in Ijebu and Remo axis of Ogun State and it was led by the DCP Operations, Muhammad AbdulKadir, to black spots and hideouts of the cultists.

“We did the job operationally, no sentiment, nobody should politicize the operation.

We are not interested in the owners of the houses raided and there is no house we visited without an intelligence report on either one or two occupants of the house.”

The police spokesman said those in custody will be screened to determine their level of involvement in cult activities.
