Fashola Seals Off Kalu’s House by Rockyheight: 7:20am On Aug 14, 2013
Lagos State government yesterday sealed off a property belonging to former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, in Park View Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos. This is coming on the heels of Kalu’s condemnation of Lagos government’s deportation of 72 residents of the state, mainly South Easterners, to Onitsha, Anambra State.
Kalu had, after the deportation, told Fashola to apologise to the Igbo for the deportation and threatened to drag him to court if he failed to do so. Daily Sun gathered that officials of Lagos State swooped on the Park View property and placed a seal on it. No reason was given for the action.

Speaking on what happened, Special Adviser (Media) to Kalu, Mr. Emeka Obasi, said the sealing off of the former governor’s property was done as a revenge for his criticism of the Lagos government’s deportation of Igbo and others.

Obasi said the property had been there for several years, wondering why it’s after Kalu criticised Fashola over the deportation issue, that the government sealed it off.

He stated: “Why is it that it is now that the property is being sealed, barely two weeks after my boss disagreed with the action of Fashola? We maintain our stand and this will not distract us from fighting for the people.

“The action of the Lagos State Government remains unconstitutional because every citizen of Nigeria has a right to live in any part of the country.

“Fashola should remember that the Igbo community constitutes about 35 per cent of registered voters in Lagos State and they should be treated like they matter in the scheme of things.”

Meanwhile, the state government said in a statement yesterday, that “the property was destrained pursuant to Section 40 of the Revenue Administration Law of Lagos State for failure to pay the statutory annual land use charge.”

It was added that when the issue was brought to the attention of Governor Fashola yesterday evening, he directed the agency to unseal the property and that 14 days grace period be given to Kalu to pay the said charge. Sunnewspaper

Yet the title of this post says "Fashola Seals Off Kalu's House".

PDP must really be scared of Lagos politicians to keep lying like this!

Meanwhile, the state government said in a statement yesterday, that “the property was destrained pursuant to Section 40 of the Revenue Administration Law of Lagos State for failure to pay the statutory annual land use charge.”

Kalu didn't pay his bills, so the government exercised it's right to seal his house. This is what happens to normal people who are not in government. THEN....

"...when the issue was brought to the attention of Governor Fashola yesterday evening, he directed the agency to unseal the property and that 14 days grace period be given to Kalu to pay the said charge."

When Fashola found out that a prominent man was being treated like a commoner, he immediately unsealed the house and gave the man 14 days to pay his bill. Fashola didn't have to do this, he did it just to be nice.

Instead of promptly paying his bills and thanking the Governor like a normal person, Kalu cried to the media and claimed discrimination. Why? Probably to try to bully Fashola into unsealing his house without paying the bill.

I feel zero sympathy for Kalu. He should pay his tax like everyone else. The person who wrote this misleading headline, should be ashamed. Now I put all these together with the information that was provided above, yet you apparently could only read the headline. Does this not make you an illiterate?

According to the article that we both just read, the only action Fashola took was to UNseal the house.

Just make sure whoever is planning your war has better reading comprehension skills. The war will end badly otherwise.

Orji Kalu should use the 14 days ultimatum graciously to pay his tax which he has been duly notified on three occasions.Every property owner in Lagos State pay their Land use charge or their property is sealed,i have a similar property close to my house...He should not bring ethnicity to defend his irresponsibility...He should learn how to set good example for the young generation of Igbo`s who are property owners to play by the rules and be law abiding rather than bringing in ethnic sentiment to curry cheap favor from Nigerians and particularly the Igbo`s. As a Nigerian Youth we know those who are our enemies be it Ibgo,Hausa,Yoruba,Ijaw or Middle Belt...WE SAY NO TO ETHNIC AND TRIBAL SENTIMENT. The time of sealing the property is inconsequential as claimed by Mr. Orji`s aide, he should understand that he comes to equity must come with clean hand.

If you own property in Lagos, you have to pay a land use tax. Your tax is due on a certain date, but you have a grace period if you fail to pay. After that grace period is over, the LASG WILL seal your property until you pay your taxes. You get many notices in advance of the due date reminding you to pay your tax. If you don't pay, you get three notices stating that you have not paid, and that the penalty of not paying within the grace period is having your property sealed. This happens over the course of months! It cannot be planned quickly.

Kalu knew his property was going to be sealed MONTHS before it happened, way before Fashola 'deported' anyone. If this is not the case, it should be easy for him show his tax records to the press.

The timing of the Lagos Government is not suspicious. They are just doing their job. Kalu's timing is suspicious and opportunistic.
He is trying to take advantage of the current political climate to avoid paying his taxes. Until he pays his tax, he is a burden on the state and I think he should be deported.

In addition to that, they put a giant sticker on your gate during the notification period. I think sensible people will ask the pertinent question - "Should Kalu shamelessly cry to the media when you know that you are owing the state a statutory due/taxes?" in some other countries you risk forfeiture of such...
