The two days were declared public holidays in order to enable workers clean their houses and surrounding environment, especially drainage facilities and water ways.

The Bauchi State Governmenthas declared Tuesday, August 20 and Wednesday, August 21, as work free days for all categories of workers in the state except those on essential services.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ishola Adeyemi, in Bauchi on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the workers are expected to use the two days to clean their houses and surrounding environment, especially drainage facilities and water ways.
“This has become necessary in view of the ongoing efforts by the state government to effectively address the menace of flooding in the state.
“Flooding presently constitutes serious threat to lives and wreaks serious damage to property in various part of the state,” the statement said.

The government directed staff ofBauchi State Environment Protection Agency(BASEPA), to evacuate all refuse removed from the drainagesystem. It further directed all members of staff whose duties are environment-related, to participate fully in the clearing exercise.

The government also directed the staff of the water board, as well as workers of the state ministry of health, to treat all wells in the state with chlorine, calling on all residents of the state to co-operate with the workers.

In a bid to ensure total compliance, the governor directed members of the state executive council and caretaker committee chairmen of local government councils, to supervise the exercise.

It said market and other business premises, should remain closed from 7 am to 10 pm, stressing that security agencies had been mandated to maintain law and order and also ensure compliance.
