There Is No Need For ASUU To Continue Strike –jonathan by steg0miah: 4:52pm On Aug 27, 2013
The lecturers have been on strike for over 8 weeks.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said there was no need for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue with their industrial action.

Mr. Jonathan said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Represented by Ruqayyat Rufai, the Minister of Education, the president said N30 billion had been released for the payment of earned allowances in all public universities.

The president said that the inaugurated projects were in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to providing quality education in the country. He said the projects were based on the need assessment exercise conducted by the Federal Government in universities.

University lecturers have been on a nationwide strike for over 8 weeks with the lecturers demanding a full implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the federal government. While the government says it has provided N30 billion for earned allowances of lecturers, the lecturers said about N92 billion is required to completely offset the earned allowances of the concerned lecturers. That and other demands are the reasons the lecturers have continued with their strike.

Mr. Jonathan also urged the FUTO administration to engage in research for national development, while stressing the need for proper maintenance of completed projects.

The Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Chidozie Asiabaka, in his speech, expressed joy at the completion of the structure.

Mr. Asiabaka noted that the projects had gone a long way in tackling the dearth of basic infrastructure in the school.

“The dearth of classrooms, lecture theatres, power supply, student hostels, office accommodation, library space and facilities are major challenges my administration faced when I assumed office two years-ago,’’ he said.

The vice chancellor said with the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the university got 1000 sitting-capacity lecture theatre, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies Building.

He said the inaugurated projects are the new Engineering Technology, School of Environmental Technology Building, Centre for Nuclear Energy Studies and Training and the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology building complexes.

The others are the School of Environmental Technology building, landscaping of the campus and the provision of solar energy lights on the campus.

He also commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on the completion of the giant student hostel building in the university.

He lauded the Federal Government for the release of N1 billion for the development of capital projects in each public funded university.

There is no reason for them to continue with the strike but there is a reason why you should allocate outrageous money to yourself in the budget also thr must be a reason I mean selfish political reason why you entered into an agreement with them in 2009. Thr must be a stupid reason why ur inept self blames everything on the opposition, ethnicity, and religion.

See this many Projects listed above? This is not Unique to FUTO alone. In fact, this kind of Inauguration is happening in most Tetiary FG Schools/Universities. I cudn't recognise certain parts of UNIBEN When I went back recently cos of d many Projects d New VC had done/completed, including some that had bn abandone even b4 I was then. Any Uniben Student know what I am talking about. TETFUND (mostly), Special Interventions and better Revenue-collecting abilities of many Universities/Polytechnics lately, have reali aided all these..... Kudos. More needed though

otokx: This FG is playing politics with students lives.
Why is the FG not only playing politics but blackmailing any one who disagrees with their viewpoint OPPOSITION
Moreover they are using divide and rule tactics so to turn the students against their tutors
Can someone remind Mr President that even if our democracy is not how it ought to be,at least we are in a civil rule and not a dictatorship?
Even at that what ASUU is demanding to be implemented is VALIDLY SIGNED AGREEMENT with the FG
The FG can cry to the heavens on the lack of finances for all they like but with the obscene amounts we hear the Legislators and Executive stack in their pockets, the FG can as well be speaking to deaf people

ACADEMIC: ASUU officials, SPN engages in street brawl

Posted by: legis admin Posted date: August 27, 2013 | 5:48 pm In: DEMOCRACY

LEGISREPORTS NG – Leaders of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who were on public protest on the streets of Calabar and key officials of Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) who, too, were on similar mission, threw caution to the wind when both engaged in a free-for-all fight opposite Governor Liyel Imoke’s office in Calabar yesterday.

None of the parties agreed to allow peace to reign as each wanted to spear-head their protesting group into the governor’s office.

When SPN leaders saw that ASUU officials, Non Academic Staff of Universities, National Union of Teachers, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities in collaboration with Joint Action Front (JAF) were having upper hands, they ordered their boys to shove the ASUU officials aside and take over the protest.

This therefore caused both groups to drag themselves about; punching, tearing each other banners and calling themselves names.

It took the hard intervention of mobile policemen on patrol in the neighbourhood and those at the governor’s office to separate both officials and to restore peace. An ASP that led the police team warned them against further disruption of public peace otherwise they would have themselves to blame.

Speaking for leader of the SPN, Segun Sango, an official that refused to disclose his name, said that they were not actually out to disrupt the mass protest by ASUU and JAF to save public education but to join forces with them as they too have been at the vanguard in condemning what he called ‘federal government’ recalcitrance’, adding that ASUU and other Trade Unions must mobnilise for.

Chairperson of JAF, Dr Dipo Fashina could not immediately comment on the street brawl by his men and those of SPN but an official of ASUU said SPN came from nowhere to hijack a well-intended protest which they had invested much resources to express their disgust over federal government’s disregard for public education.
This report was prepared by our reporter in Calabar.

If the strike shouldn't continue, do well to pay the lecturer's fees as agreed, as I recall, education is one of the least funded aspect in the Nigerian budget_under 10%.
