If you want to escape jury duty, can you use a new baby as excuse?
Anybody know?

I don't have strength for this at all. Besides using my baby as excuse won't be a lie. It will truly be inconvenient for me.

Oooh jury duty! You should go, it may be an interesting case.

Tell them you're exclusively breastfeeding and the change in rhythm will upset the feeding patterns of Baby. Maybe speak to your paed about writing you something?

How's your daughter doing smiley

EfemenaXY, can you do a thread on financial matters for the family? Do you have enough info for a country like Nigeria? There are no Independent Financial Advisers here and most of the bank staff don't know much.

yup. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I'm just too lazy for this right now.

I took the whole of summer off to stay home with my baby and relax and they want to rob me off two weeks of it. Probably more. I refuse. angry

She's doing great. Sitting upright now. That's so fast. Children of nowadays.

Yes the family live there, west. You oyel people side (abd) have a cluster of black folk naaaaa,so lucky.
West is either student city centre,a small cluster in some rough areas, then sparse disbursement in very very desirable areas.if you find black person you get so excited so unfortunately no assurance that the catchment you fall into will turn up African people.
From what I gather, most don't even bother with hunting for best catchment, any school will do as they believe the kids will excel anywhere.
That's part of the reason the family came here cos once they mention private some act like they've grown horns.

The private nurseries that the kids have attended have only them as black. They are almost the only blacks every time. The parents had hoped for a change as they got older but still the same.Very tough.I s there a way to blow horn and find them?

Its mostly the extracurricular the parents were eyeing cos after observing children privately educated, they saw heavy confidence, the parents are heavy introverts so finding it tough to know what and what extracurriculars to engage in or how to give that boost to the children especially as mothers work pattern is crazy(shifts) and will stay that way for some time.

After the answer the parents have gotten here, they are thinking of waiting till p5-7 then private or wait till secondary.Their fear is that by secondary it would be too late especially for the first child.

Thank you oo.The mother was tossing and turning yesterday night. It is well.No matter where they end up though, the parents are determined to put in their best.

Putting finances into consideration, going public might just be the better option. One thing that is important that tearoses mentioned is time on the parents' part.Do the parents have ample time for the children as that is very important in the child's development.

Thank you Thorpido,
Both parents are in the same profession as you,Father done with training, mother at the bottom and you know how hectic at it can be for startees. They hope it will ease off with progression and seniority.
As Efe advised, they will go to a financial advisor and make plans from there as the person will be able to also see pay packets koro koro.
The parents aim to put in as much time as they can as the kids are very important.

My bad.I think you call them state school there.Public school in Naija means government owned schools while private means non-government schools.

In addition you may want to consider investments in property
Generally speaking property's tend to double in price in about 12 years
Plus you have the rental income guaranteed on a monthly basis if you purchase the right type of property's in the right area.
But its not for everyone so only do it if you have nerves of steel.

Tell the family not to worry too much, they sound like very hands on and very interested in their kids, so their kids already have a head start.

Onegai, same applys to you. I was on this airbuk site recently and holiday apartments in Lagos are going for about £60k a night. I see a market there.

I didn't know AirBnB/airbuk had locations for Lagos. That's not a bad idea, we live in a service apartment with good access to supermarkets and funspots. If we are travelling, we can let it out for 2 weeks. Not bad o if Himself will agree.

Property in Lagos is really overpriced, but I'm hoping prices fall as the economy slows down and maybe we can take advantage of getting something to rent out. I'd rather us get a block of apartments and have income coming in, before buying a plot of land to build our place. But let us pray and see. Baby E, strangely, is a co-landlady (Grandparents are the worst angry)

Jahblessme, for some weird reason my family in the U.K. are sorta...weird. They actually avoid areas with a high Nigerian population. One feels that sometimes the issues within the community may overwhelm him. Like a cousin who was attending a Nigerian church there and so much drama was going on with dating and business and stuff and they will carry their wahala and relocate to Nigeria.

What did he do?

He didn't do anything per se but I have reasons though...
He's the silent judgmental type...I might post pictures/videos & he'll probably be thinking I'm unserious.
B4 I blocked him, he sees virtually all my posts, he neither likes nor comments (I'm not bothered) but he does all these on my brother's posts undecided
Last but not the least, he doesn't understand, for lack of a better description, 'modern posting'... for instance, I uploaded my junior sis pics, calling her my daughter from the same mother. Hours later I got a long text from my Dad schooling me about deception & giving people the wrong 'info' & 'perception'.

My maths and taxation skills are very bad ,but based on an annual income of £150k hubby should be on the higher earning rate threshold and based on money saving expert calculations take home would be about £90,000. ( I do know self employed people know their way around these things thanks to accountants so might be more wink). and for wifey about £24K bringing it to still over £100K net.

School fees x2 would be say about £30,000 including other expenses.

If independence seeking area is Scotland, University is free so no need to save towards University( hoping that doesn't change).

I would gladly go the private route provided hubbys prospects of continuing to earn that amount is very high. However if that income is not readily guaranteed long term, I would take advantage of the good state schools at primary level and save towards going private at secondary school.

It also depends on their lifestyle generally and where their priorities lie as well though. It might seem like a lot but not enough to live a champagne lifestyle while paying for private school, normal living expenses and also looking into future investments for the children.

*Modification I can see you have gotten more than enough advise sef cheesy
from better experienced people sef cheesy I have broken my NL addiction so only stroll round weekdays to get away from work stress cheesy

The couple should not worry they will be fine.

I can feel the mum and I know how I still over obsess about my children's education. But as my daughter's teacher once told me ' the fact that you care so much means 50% of the battle is already won. Its knowing how to balance that anxiety that we sometimes need to learn.

Lol. I already took the time off work.
I don't want to spend part of it in the court.

I just have a feeling crime television makes courtrooms more interesting than they really are.

I was selected for Jury duty last for a drug/assault case, I was really looking forward to it. Only the case the was thrown out because the plaintiff kept saying he could not remember a thing shocked angry The defendant was released as well as jurors, I was so upset.

Onegai,
grin grin Some people actively avoid dense Nigerian communities like a plague because of the drama that always ensues especially in that london area. There's always one scandal or the other.Honestly, the best solution is to try to mingle with fellow Nigerians in the same or higher social strata who have the same ideals as you. When you work hard and you are busy planning the best outcome for the kids, there's noway you'll have time to design your arms with tattoos or engage in senseless gossip and husband and wife snatching.
I feel it's important for children to see people who share the same skin colour as them, people who face the same struggles, even have role models aside from the parents who also have similar features. We tried but have so far been unsuccessful mainly because we are introverts & spend all our time together. We are hoping to improve though.I'd be very happy if we can find 5 Nigerian families around with kids around the same age with the same ideology as us.

Thanks @damiso for your reply..The family have taken all on board grin grin

@Tearoses,once the family complete the big purchase next year, they intend to look into more property as investments but Mr Osborne seems to be targeting BTL.Rumor flying is that Jeremy hunt may be moved to home office..hot pepper loading for new migrants.
