The bane of development in Nigeria has been mostly hinged on fraudulent elections. Fraudulent elections heats up the polity, breeds instability and hampers development on all fronts.

The events leading to collapse of the first republic started with fraudulent elections, which led to operation 'wetie' in the west, and then a military coup, and culminated in a civil war.

Similar scenerio played out with return of democracy in 1979. The elections of 1983 was severely flawed and a ready excuse for the military to truncate democracy in December 1983.

Again, with return to democratic rule in 1999, elections progressively got worse and culminated in the very shameful and disgraceful 2007 elections.

Fortunately, for the first time since independence, a new regime of free and fair elections was instituted in 2010 by the current president. Since then, reasonable sanity has pervaded the polity and the country has witnessed infrastructural renaissance across board.

From the first election conducted by the current president in 2010 (Anambra election) all through to the 2011 general elections and recent elections in Ondo and Edo, the opposition camp have never had it so good.

Unfortunately, the down side of free and fair elections, especially in developing countries such as ours where struggle for power is crude and a rofororo fight, is that the president loses that most potent tool, albeit illegal, for whipping recalcitrant political opponents in line. Whereas the president lost this very potent tool at the centre, ALL the governors still have firm grip of this tool at the local govt level through the various state Independent electoral commissions.

An X-ray of the tenure of former president OBJ will reveal that a willing INEC is a very POTENT tool for decimating ANY political opponent. With INEC, OBJ removed all but one disloyal governors in the southwest in 2003. With INEC, OBJ decimated the mass movement of APGA in the southeast in 2003 elections. If not that Iwu's INEC came to the aid of OBJ, APGA would have swept PDP out of the southeast in 2003 elections. With INEC, OBJ removed every potentially powerful but disloyal governors in the north, including the the current governor of Kano State.

From the experiences under OBJ, those who do not know can now understand the handicap of the current president. That massive and omnipotent power, wielded by OBJ, was forgone by the current president, who decided in 2010, to do the RIGHT thing and follow the path of free and fair elections for the FIRST TIME since independecence.

It must be stated that while the president lost this power at the national level, the state governors are still wielding enormous powers through their various state electoral commissions, through which they SELECT the local govt chairmen and councillors at their whims and caprices. This is in addition to other powers wielded by the governors through their hundred percent control of the state party structure, state legislators, and state national assembly members and even federal ministers in some cases.

Now you know why this current president is more vulnerable and is considered weak by some people. Put more succintly, while OBJ and other predecessors of GEJ fought political opponents with BOTH hands, GEJ is fighting with one hand. Notwithstanding, the president has remained focused and insisted that whatever happens, the right thing must be done. This president, more than ever before, worked very hard to secure victory legally in 2011. This president has fought several battles since after the 2011 elections without the all-important tool of INEC. Currently, the president is facing another major battle within the PDP and I hope he comes out victorious as usual.

I have no fear that, notwithstanding the challenges, this president will stay the course and insist on free and fair election. However, my fear really, is whether considering the primordial nature of the politics in Nigeria and the handicap the current president faces, can any future presidents follow this path of free and fair election? How many of the current political leaders in the various opposition camps (whether within and outside PDP) can forgo the lure of having the almighty INEC in their pocket or as willing partners if they'r elected president? As we have noticed recently, the major battles in Nigeria are mostly about control of political power. It is not about governance or delivering services to the people.

Sincere 9gerian you are very very annoying. It is GEJ's advisers and foot soldiers like you that is killing the man's potential interest. What is the meaning of the crap you wrote up there. We all know that people are using Gej's meekness for weakness but the way he reacts is different from the way you andthe likes of gulag, okupe and abati react. Must you come out to write this crap to tell the whole world that another tactics is imminent. Nigerian politics is a do or die roforofo thing that we all know. But must we talk before we act. Gej have been silent to many issues surronuding him, but you and your likes are killing him. Sincere 9nigerian, have you heard the name makavelli. Its high time you guys stop putting Gej my man in the bad light and focus on more important thing4.

No one can actually outrig a sitting Nigerian president in any presidential elections.A president can only be removed when the generality of the populate comprising of the entire country unites in unison to chase him out like it happened in egypt but in view of the ethnic and religious factors at play in Nigeria we will never achieve that unanimity in such instances

Compendium of contradiction and half-truths. OBJ did not remove Kwakwanso, rather he lost to Shekarau. OBj knowing that certain states were/are volatile, could not dare to rig elections in those states. He(OBJ) compensated Shekarau with a plum ministerial job after he lost the election.

@Op, What message are you trying to pass across? Yes, GEJ has tried in the areas of electoral reforms but what I find displeasing with your post is you trying to plaster the veneer of saintly infallibility and garbs of messianic proportions around GEJ. We are still nowhere near what can be called a free and fair election, Nigeria will get it right 'with or without GEJ'.

My Sister let us just pray GEJ remain calm the way he is...because the way things are going, he may go the OBJ way and there is just nothing anybody will do about it if he decide to rig with the instrument of power at his disposal. My position on NL is known. I stand for the RIGHT thing. I stand for FREE and FAIR election.

Just to burst your bubble, when OBJ massively rigged elections between 1999 and 2007, what did you and your fellow noise maker do? You only made noise as usual and later sought refuge in the courts. When Yar Adua shamelessly rigged the Ekiti re-run in 2009 or so, what did you and your fellow noise makers do? Make noise as usual and sought refuge in the courts. When Lagos ACN massively rigged the 2011 Lagos local council polls, what the PDP do? Nothing besides going to court. PDP recently rigged the Kwara local council polls, what did APC do? Nothing, except noise and going to court.

That the current president chose to do the RIGHT thing is a matter of good conscience and sincerity of purpose, and not an act of cowardice

The south west governors were al;so rigged out save for Tinubu.Tinubu was also supposed to be rigged out( a fake result declaring Funsho wlliams winner was already posted on the Inec's website) before Obasanjo cnceled the plan
